WOW ! I just discovered this site 3/13/10. after all these
years! I was stationed in HHC 2/81 S-3 for my first year there,
1984,I was assigned to the Air Force,ALO. They where a great
bunch to work with . Then I was re-assigned to C co. 2/81 Armor.
Where I meet some of the best solider's I ever worked with in my
career. Sfc. Sebeck, 1Sgt. Kilanski, Pfc.Larry Ward, Pfc.
Hulverson, Pfc.Huffaker, Pfc. Stremmel, Pvt. Garcia, Pfc.
Morales, Sp4.tennell and the one and only Sgt. Applegate. 86-87.
The pizza bar down at the end of the strasse my main man at the
pizza bar aka Mono. and the chicken man, halb henchen 5 mark.
pomme frites mit cheese and mayo. und ein heffe wiezen, bitte.
And the infamous Nco club, with the Long Island ice teas, and
the blood alley. I Remember Graf. Tank Table VIII. shooting a
988 out of 1000. On the Xo's tank. C-65 the caboose.

Served from early 1972 till Dec. 74 in HHC 3/37 then 2/81. Drove
a 5 ton in Support Plt. hauling all the treadheads around the
tank trails. They called me Freak or Redfreak! Guess I was kinda
wierd back then but I couldn't resist the hash. Fellow truck
drivers were Goose, Booblits, Tink so many others. Ran with
Frenchy,Elia,TC Hudson etc. Would like to hear from anyone who
served in that timeframe!!!

I was in Erlangen from December 1962 until December of 1964 in
the 4th Armored infantry division. I drove the army personel
carrier for the company comander. I was Crushed between two
personel carriers in 1964 before I came back to the states. I
had a broken pelvis and my back is not worth a hoot.
I also had some great times when we went to town. I was born in
Ponce, Puerto Rico.

My dad Piotr Bednarz was in the 2nd Infantry/46th Battalion
stationed at Ferris Barracks between 69 and 72. He was SP6
Kitchen Supervisor. This was some of the best time I had in my
childhood living in Erlangen.
If anyone remembers this time frame and my dad I would like to
here from you. My favorite places were the AYA and skatingrink.
I also used to crawl under the tanks parked in the parade feild
and play inside them. Great times.

I had two great tours at Ferris Barracks. The first in
1978-1982. Second tour 1986-1988. Great times, good soldiers,
good memories. In '78, SGM Charlie Troutman assigned me to A CO
1st BN 35th Armor as a Tank Platoon Sergeant, funny thing....I
was a 19D4M Scout. Had a good time at my first level one gunnery
at Graf on M-60 tank. Lots bigger than the Sheridan I came off
of at Fort Knox. Good memories as a Scout Platoon Sergeant for
the 35th. Served as First Sergeant (E-7) for two years before I
went to teach at Bad Tolz's 7th Army NCO Academy. Second tour at
Ferris Barracks I ran into the one of the toughest CSM's who
decided he wanted me in 2nd BDE Operations. I had just left a
tank company at Fort Carson where I served as a First Sergeant
for the Silver Lions 4th BN 68th Armor.

My wife and I were back in Erlangen two yrs. ago next month and
I still recall a walk one day that I had always thought about
everytime I went back but never did.
I was visiting that evening with my brother-in-law and his wife
at the corner of Henke str./Werner von Siemens str. I decided to
walk up Henke to the corner with Schilling str. which was
located across the street from Gate 2. As I stood there by
myself and looked across and saw nothing but a line of building
that were evidently owned by Siemens Corp. There was visual
boundary or anything that could be recognized as to where the
Gate 2 had been located. As I turned to walk backdown Henke I
tried so hard to visualize what it had looked like back in 1957
compared to 'o7..I guess they call the difference progress, but
one thing it can't change is my meory of that little city over
50yrs. ago.

Hi Fellow Brother-in-Arms: I need help from those who can. About
a year ago I applied for VA Disability because of physical
illness that I have today because of or result of serving in the
military. I have written letters from several doctors that
concur with my physical illness.
After waiting these many months and all the forms and trips back
and forth to the VA and money spent on exams, etc. Here is the
result from the VA. The said,"We have exhausted all efforts, but
cannot find my records". They said that they must have burned in
a fire at the Archives around 1970. I went to the court house
today and talked to the Va, They have nothing to construct my
record. I informed them that I was in the Nurnberg Hospital
station 16(when I was there)and later I understand it was
station 21. I am being asked if I can find these things: 1,
Picture of the hospital with the name on a sign for instance. 2.
A copy of a birth certificate(block out the name)with name of
the hospital. 3. Specific date as to when the hospital closed.
Right now they are telling me that they don't know if Nurnberg
hospital ever existed and right now they don't believe I was
ever a patient there for two months or not?
It hurts my feeling that I have to resort to ask for your help,
but I have no other recourse at this time.
Is there anyone else out there who have been told there records
were lost, mostly because of a fire? Please email me if you have
or will share some information with me.
Alan M. Stubbs:
Richard, go to this site's main page, scroll down to
pictures - then to Nurnberg and click on it, then there is a
list of different locations in Nurnberg, click on Nurnberg
Hospital=there are some good pictures of the hospital which
I should think would help. I wish I could help more! Best of
luck!!! |
Richard Reed:
Hi Alan: How have you been? Thank you very much for the
info. I now have pictures and the date of June '94 when it
closed. I appreciate all the help.
|
Cherie:
Hi Richard, what VA are you at? They are giving you a
run-around and I find that disgraceful. Please contact the
main VA hospital in DC. Just go to the VA website for the
address and phone number. The medical records at Nurnberg
American Hospital did not get burned! My sister was born
there in 1970 and we were still able to get the records.
Good luck.

Rick DePue:
Hi SFC Price,
I was with B 1/46 from June'77 to Aug'79. I started out in
1st Platoon. I believe you were a squad leader then and Sgt.
Nance was the Platoon Sgt then.
Cpt Brown was the Company Commander. I recall what the 1st
Sgt looked like but I can't remember his name!
I remember SFC Houston, SFC McHarq<sp> SSG Henderson, SSG
Knight, SSG Amons<sp> and SGT Gurley.
I had SGT Richards as my squad leader in both 1st platoon
and later in 3rd platoon. He was good, I really respected
him.
Anyway good to see someone from B 1/46 posting here.
Hope you're doing well.
Regards,
SP4 Rick DePue |

I was in 1st Plt as a sgd ldr. I remember SSg Nance, Sfc
Houston, Sfc McHarg, SSG Henderson, SSG Knight, SSG Amons,
SFC Stone & SSG Smith.Later was Plt Sgt & also was in TOW
section for a bit. Also spent a bit of time in CSC with the
Scouts. was one that taught the Dragon training.
|
Rick DePue:
Hi SFC Price,
I've remembered a few more names since my first reply.
SFC Dupre in CS PLT. SSG Hanson in 2nd PLT. I believe 2LT
Lara as the PLT leader for 1st PLT. I think 2LT Califf<sp>
was the 2nd PLT leader. Do you remember the APC that caught
fire(heater) from 2nd Platoon during one of the field
exercises? I remember the rumour was that 2LT Califf's
career was finished because of that fire. What a shame, he
was a good guy.
In 3rd PLT we had 2LT Harner as our PLT leader.
T remember the XO was a good officer but I can't remember
his name either.
Do you remember CPT Brown, the Company CO?? he was a
helcopter pilot in Vietnam.
The Battalion CO was LTC Meloy, if I remember right.
I like to say I remember SFC Stone and SSG Smith but I
really can't say I do. What platoons were they assigned to?
Do you remember a SGT Ethington<sp> who worked in HQ
Platoon?
I remember the armorer was a big guy with blonde hair who
was never satisfied with how clean your weapon was.
When did you go to CSC Co??
We shared the barracks with them. Didn't they also have some
of the barracks behind us with C Co??
Boy it's tough to remember what was what, after all these
years!! :D
Regards,
Rick |
Paul Price:
I remember Lt Laura, SFC Stone was Plt Sgt, SSG Smith was
Sqd Ldr. I remember Cpt Brown then Cpt Doy took over as CO

A friend of mine sent me a clipping from the Erlanger newspaper,
showing the Vandalism on the Monument placed inside Ferris
Barracks representing all those who had served there. The
culprits at this time have not been apprehended.
Karin:
Richard thank you for posting this information,if anyone
likes to see the picture I can send them a copy.
It would be nice if Eddie could post it on the Ferris
Barracks website?
I would like to write to the city of Erlangen and let them
know how I feel about this.
What about your guy's out-there?
|
Alan M. Stubbs:
If you want to see a picture of the memorial go to Ferris
Barracks members, then photos, then to Erlangen Oct. 2008. I
posted a picture of it there in October. What a shame, it
happens here in America too. They are all idiots!

Come on guys and gals. It can't be possible that all of you have
run out of stories and people who were statined in Erlangen. Has
there been a drastic change to this website that I don't know
about.
Lets get the interest back in again.
What do you think: Karin, Dirndl, Bill, etc.?
Alan M. Stubbs:
Too many changes for everyone I think. Plus when we were
told this site was going to be shut down and we had to
transfer to the new site and yet it never happened. Easy to
loose your following when that stuff happens. I still check
it every day and comment from time to time. It's pretty sad
though!
|
Richard:
Hey Alan Stubbs, send me an email if you would like. Sounds
like you and I may have served around the same time.
|
Eddie:
This site was never closing down.
MSN was closing all their groups and we had a group started
on MSN. Multiply took over all MSN Groups, so we got
switched over to Multiply.
MSN, Yahoo and Multiply are all groups once started run on
their own.
Ferris Barracks at www.ferrisbarracks.com is the only Ferris
Barracks website. All the rest are groups.
The Multiply Group took the place of the Ferris Barracks
Roster. Everyone can join the group and it's like putting
your name on the roster, but a lot better because everyone
has their own page to enter anything they like. No one has
to mail me their photos because everyone has their own place
to put the photos and run their own blog.
|
Alan M. Stubbs:
Thanks for the info. Eddie, NOW I understand!
Richard, I'll email you this weekend. |
Dirndl:

Wonderful memories. I worked for Lt. Colonel Otstott, Major

Erlangen, Ferris Barracks. 1974-1977. I loved it and loved
living OFF post from the second week even more (Almoshofer and
TONN). I did want to leave after 3 years though. Used the good
ol G.I. Bill, graduated from UCLA and returned to Italy (John

Wanted to stay forever. Take care guys, Fellow Veteran, from

Look at two entries prior to this one. I asked for help to find
this person and it was answered by a Ferris Barracks Comrade. He
not only found Vera alive and located, but found that David is
still living and they are together for over 50yrs. They married
about a month after my wife and I. Somehow the information given
us was incorrect(Thank God for Dave), but look at the years we
have missed by the mistake. Anyway, last evening my wife and I
talked with both of them for a lenghy time. Thanks again Tim for
your help.

allowed us all to find old brothers in arms that we would

great outcome for you, thanks for the update! |

Many of us always try to find old friends, so here I am asking
for info. I serve with a good friend named David Snowert from
Escanaba, Mich. and I was from St. Joseph, Mich. at that time.
We served together from '56-58 in Erlangen and Aschaffenburg.
David was a Mich. State Trooper before entering service and
returned to it after discharge. Both of us married girls from
Erlangen and he and his wife Vera visited us in Mich. several
times after serving, but David passed away in his forties and
lost contact with his wife, so here's what I would like to know!
Her maiden name was Vera Knauer and lived not far from wher the
Beerfest is held. I heard that after he passed she returned to
Germany and then we have heard that she came back to the states.
If any of yoou knew her and her present location, please let us
know. She came from a large family and quite sure that some
still live in Erlangen.

My father was in the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, who had the

1957-early 1958. His name is William and he went by Bill or

Nuremberg who was working in Dambach. Her name is Hannelore,
Honey, and had long red hair. If anyone remembers them, I would
appreciate hearing from you.

WILLIAM (BILL) A. WIESSNER,

Bill fathered a son, Patrick in 1975, with me, then living in

(Patrick married, Bill now has 3 grandkids).
Does anybody remember him/his exact unit or is in touch with
him?? For personal reasons (son looking for father & some

that place was. Imagine, after drinking the best beer in the

my fondest memory is getting Egg Rolls from the trailer outside

now...

I hung out at Uncle Sam's in Neustadt back in 1985. I was in
B Co 2/81. Do you remember the song "Your in the Army now"
that they played all the time? The DJ at the club actually
let me take the record back to the barrack and tap the song
and I brought the record back the next day. Can you believe
they trusted me with it? Great memories. |

Interesting find! I was in 1-35 Armor 76-78 and 2-37 (changed to
3-34) 83-86.
I found posts from some 1-35 guys: Ted Saavedra, post 403; Earl
Mensch, post 246; and Mike Curl, post 214. I have a little info
on some others: Bob Harn retired as CSM a couple years ago and
lives in Colorado Springs (his unit in Desert Storm is written
up in the book "the Boys of Company C" - he was 1SG). Don Loop
(I ran into him again at Fort Lewis) lives in Elmira NY. Bob
Edwards got out of the army but then got back in. Dave Harley I
haven't heard from since 2006 but he was still in Wyoming at the
time. Chapman was living just outside Seattle. That's about all
I know.
The only post from 2-37, 3-34 guys that I saw was from Tony
Wade, post 11. I was in A Co with him. Bn Cdr Larry Smith made
BG and retired. Jim Connely retired and lives in Leavenworth.
I was in Erlangen in May 2008. I went to visit my daughter who
is a nun and was spending a year at her order's convent in
Breuberg. We went for several day trips, including back to
Erlangen. It was the first time I've been back. What a rush! We
had a great time! I guess I'm getting older but the memories
stay young. Those were wild and crazy years and I wouldn't
exchange them for anything.
Bill Conner:
Hey Steve: Were you in B or C co 1/35. I remember your name
not your face. Do you remember SSG Christopher, he was in C

I was the Chaplain for 2/81 Armor and 1/35 Armor with 2nd Bde,
1st AD from 1983 to 1986. I served under both COLs Brad Peterson
- 2/81 Armor, The Red Lions and Robert Brown - 1-35 Armor, The
Iron Knights. Col Richard Goldsmith was the Bde Commander in
Erlangen when I left to return stateside. Erlangen was a
beautiful community. The soldiers, military family members and
German people there were first rate. I loved guiding chapel
tours to Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Frankenschweiz. My best
regards to all those with whom I served between 1983 and 1986. I
pray your lives have been full and rewarding. Take Care --
Chaplain(LTC), ret Dave Penland

Was in A company 3/37th & 2/81 from 9-70 until 6-72. Anyone
remember "Speedy", Fish, Poteet, Carlos Chavez, the guy who
stole all of the morphine from the war medic packs and killed
his liver Sgt.Tiny Lee ? The opium den in the next to the last
room. Sure would be nice to get a role call list from back then,
the 70's did a number on my memory. I did see a list from 73
that showed Lt. Satchel on it.
Clutcth:
I was also there at that time,I do remember Tiny Lee,
partied with him alot, seems like I recall a "fish" I recall

Christmas always brings a funny story to mind from my days in
Erlangen. It was December and as usual we were downtown getting
drunk. As the music played and the drink flowed I remarked that
this will be the 1st time I wont have a tree at Christmas.
Wellthe party broke and I headed back to the barracks. When I
woke the next morning, there was a tree! Some of the guys just
couldnt stand the newbie not having a tree so they cut one down.
They werent as sneaky as they thought! Anyone remember the trees
around the tennis court? We had to plant those as punishment.
Those were the days..........

Hello all! It's been a while since I have visited this site but
wanted to say hello. I was a medic stationed at Ferris Barracks
from 4/72 - 1/78, first at HHC 1/46 from 4/72 - 10/74 and then
at the 120th Med Det (Health Clinic at BDE HQ) until 1/78.
Chief Shaffer, are you still on active duty or have they finally
let you retire for the third time?
If anyone remembers Cpt. Ireland (CO, HHC 1/46), he is alive and
well in Carmel, CA. Also, SSG Strup from CSC 1/46 lives about
three blocks from me here in Lacey, WA (I was a medic for his
platoon in 1972-73) and Robert (Bob) Sanford, a fellow medic
from HHC 1/46 from 72 -74 is a school teacher in Sacramento, CA.
All the best,
Roy
Mike Bower:
Hey Roy, Boo from Bn.Maint,I remember Capt.Ireland, you and
Bob Sanford. I was in HHC & CSC 1/46 73-75 |
James McMaken:
I think you might be referring to Paul Ireland, who served
with my dad at HHC 1/46 in 1972-1974? CPT Ray McMaken.
Ireland went to Fort Benning after Germany? |

I went back this May for the first time since I left in 79. I
took my wife on her first trip ever out of the USA. Of course we
hit the fest. It was the last Thursday of the fest. I couldn't
believe how crowded it was. As everythign does, the town sure
has changed but remainded the same at heart. I was surprised to
find that my favorite bar, the Bierfitzel, once hard for an
American to get access to, is now owned by a guy origianlly from
New York.
I was B.Co. 2/81 and HHC 2/81 for a short while. If any of you
guys:Rowles, Cummings, Risalek, Donahue, Grimm, Combs, McMillen,
McClendon, Shadoan, are out there, drop me a line. I'd like to

My name is James (Stanley) Gillespie. My father, S.F.C. Jimmy D.
Gillespie was stationed at Ferris from 1973-1977. He began with
1/46th in S-4 and later transferred ovr to the old post
Headquarters bldg over by the old cafeteria and bookstore. I can
remember that while with 1/46th, his clerk was a guy by the name
of "Rapi". That's all can remember about "the office". For those
other "army brats",I attended Erlangen Elementary School grades
4-6, 1973-1975. If anyone knows of my father or you were a
military brat then, I would enjoy hearing from you. Would be
great to find some old Little League baseball buddies.Coach's
name was Reynolds. Thanks.
Everett Shaffer:
I knew your father very well. We had a great time together.
We put the engine in your dad's car in the motorpool.
|
James Gillespie:
Mr. Shaffer,I was a little surprised to see such a quick
response to my recent posting. Thank You. After telling my
brother of the Ferris site and my posting,he and I talked,
oddly enough, about Dad rebuilding the engine in that old
Impala. We wondered where he actually did the work.I could
not remember. I'm sorry to say that Dad passed in 1985. I
would enjoy talking with you about some of the things that
you and Dad did. Thanks.

I love this page!!!My Dad was stationed in Erlangen. I lived
there from 1983-1998. I still remember '93 or '94 when they
spraypainted "bye bye cool america" next to gate at Hartmann
strasse. Whenever I walked to the german school i attended i saw
soldiers doing pt running downtown passing mcdonalds and through
the park. nice memories. My Dad still lives in Erlangen his name
is Bernard W Still. I am in the Army myself and stationed in
Hohenfels. I am so glad i found this page, thats part of my
childhood:) you guys take care

I was stationed in Erlangen from 1982-1986, serving in 1-46 and
2-6 Infantry there. Had a great friend from there that I have
lost contact with; Charlie Wiesman, owner and operator of the
Zum Zollhaus in Erlangen. If anyone has contact information for
him I would appreciate it. Thanks.
CW4 Everett Shaffer:
Ronnie,
I didn't see the Zoll Haus there anymore. I just left
Erlangen in June. Read back some of the guest book guys that
live in Erlangen and send them a email. I sent you a email
to Yahoo.

Ronnie,
Also look in the AKO white pages and you can find most of us
there.

Karin Wade:
Roberto Huezo (C 2/6 Inf):
Let me translate this message for you:
Hello Ronnie, i met Charlie in the spring last year by
chance as my daughter and I were looking for an apartment.
Hel lives in Erlangen, in the district of Siglietzhof.
Unfortunally I don't recall the street name. I hope you find
someone to translate this message. I believe that Charlie's
health is not doing so well. |
Karen Vinion:
Col...did a lady by the name of Helga work there?
|
Everett Shaffer:
Thanks so much for the info on Charlie. Chief, please drop
me a line whenever you have time. Great to hear from you.
