Herzo Base Herzogenaurach, Germany
|
My wife (Kathy) and I were at Herzo right after we were married and
spent our first 2 1/2 years of married life there, living in
Hauptendorf. What a wonderful experience! We loved every minute of
it. Some of our favorite activities were going to the Nurnberg PX
cafeteria for the "Steak Nights", going to Berchtesgaden, and using
our area map and going "Castle Hunting" to all the ruined castles
within a radius of 50 or so miles. We were active in the Protestant
Chapel, Kathy taught at the pre-school on base for 2 years, and I
was the clerk for the 05D Section in the Operations Compound. We are
looking for Clyde and Teresa James, Danny Jones, Tim Leitel
(spelling?) from the the east coast (Jersey?) and John and Jeri
Stoddard. Please contact us using the aol address.

Hi! I am a former Army brat, born at the Nurenburg Hospital in 1970
- my dad was stationed at Herzo 1967-1970 - my mom did the books at
the PX and played the organ at the chapel occasionally. We lived in
Herzo in an apartment. Does anyone remember Ronald Hile from that
time period? In 1969 you would have seen him stenciling "Think Pink"
on anything that would stay still long enough!! I would love to hear
from anyone who knew him, or my mother, Elaine.

1st. Worked at the Photo Shop above the NCO Club, later we moved to
the "Hangar". Knew Chuck Hauck.
2nd. Later Managed the Audio/Photo Center. 3rd. In the late 80's ran several of the German/American Fests outside the front gate. "Brother George" (a "fixture" at "Steel Trees" Golfcourse) worked for me then. Col. Edwin Vernon was 210th CO. Great guy. The Nuernberg 99th ASG CO., came to HB to talk about the G/A Fest and Edwin was smoking a cigarette in his office, when reminded that smoking was forbidden, Edwin said, "Maybe it is forbidden in your HQ, but not in mine." (What a man!!!) Turned off the lights in Nuernberg in '95 and was transferred to Graf. |

Can't describe to anyone how delighted I am to have found this site.
I arrived at Herzo Base April 1962. My time there was more like
being at a golf resort than a military base. Steel Trees Golf Course
might not have been Augusta National but it was for me.
Everyone was pretty laid back on post. Some of the officers and NCO's lived with their families in and around Herzogenaurach. I seem to recall there was some housing on post close to the main entrance. Col.McFadden was the post commander. He was an "Officer and a Gentleman". I really don't remember an officer or NCO that was uptight. The only strange people were the "Specialist' that worked in the HQ facility. However they were serious about their work and the mission to be accomplished. (more later) |

Herzo Base summer 1967 thru summer 1968. SP5 worked in HQ S-4 with a

base when I first got there and just before I went to Ft. Dix to

northwest of Herzo. A great little village with great people. Herzo

Oct. 6, 2008, My husband, Charles A. Hurely, recently passed away on
Aug 24. 2008. He was in the Army and then at Herzo_Base to work for
government. I have his Herzo-Base wooden plaque (1957) hanging on
the wall. His job had something to do with the Morse Code (secrets)
in the Army, at Herzo-Base and his entire career at NSA. He talked
about these things and I only halfway listened. I have a poem
written by Leo Carty, his friend, called "Christmas in Nurnberg"
1957. I cannot find it on the Internet. I understand he died in
1994. I would like to type this poem in a place, where others, who
lived it, can read it. Write me at my email address and tell me
where to send it. Sincerely, Judith

I lived in Germany from January 1985 until September 1989. My
ex-husband, Chuck Foley, was the RMO at Herzo Base for the Field
Artillery Brigade. Since we were civilians we lived on the economy
in Niederndorf. Some of the officer's wives were really wonderful
people. Cissy Holland and Lucy Godfrey were very kind to me
especially since I wasn't a military wife. We stayed at the "Herzo
Hilton" for the first 6 weeks we were at Herzo. One of my sons was
born in Niederndorf in 9/88 and we moved a week later to another
post.

I was stationed at Herzo Base from Oct 76 to Mar 78 and was an (E4)
in A-TAB 2/25th radar unit. We spent so much time in Grafenwöhr in

Does anyone out there know of or remember a Sgt 1st class, (not sure
if that was his exact rank, Andrew Jackson Wyatt?
He was stationed at Herzo Base in the early 1950s at least up to 1954. He lived at Herzo Base with his wife. He was married to Mary Ethel Wyatt and they adopted a German girl from the Herzogenaurach Orphange and a German baby boy at the hospital at Erlangen. Looking for someone who knew Andrew J. Wyatt (Andy) or (AJ). |

1969-1971--- great to see people trying to connect with friends from
years gone by. I was a 05K20, hung around with friends Tim Tamplin,
Greg Ellingson, Ken Torsch, Ron Heaps, Glenn Mukai, Richard Allison,
Richard Deasy. Had great time playing cards, going to the club,
visiting local towns, Mama's (???)-- typical newby's stuff. I saw
Steve Foute recently signed on-- I remember you and the yellow Fiat-
I was just a little jealous but-- oh well--- it was a cool car.

I had a ball in Herzo. The problem is: I don't remember much beyond the barrells of German beer. My name is David Foster. I was a jeep driver for a really cool first sgt (top), he was a short African American man who had a heart as big as a mountain. I would really love to hear from some of my old friends, Ron Amon, Ron Amarine, Micheal Carty, Kenny Tilton, just to name a few. |

Ah, what memories! I was one of the Air Force troops at Herzo.
Arrived in Jul. 1961 and was the last Air Force enlisted man to
leave, in Sept. 1962. Great bunch of guys. I remember the daily
rides to our radar site at Mausdorf, and the fun of going up the
final hill there on ice-covered roads. Also remember many happy
nights spent at Cafe Kern in Herzo town. And then there was the
Hillbilly Gasthaus in Nurnburg - - but that's a whole 'nother story.
Would love to hear from any other AF troops who were there.

For all who used to go to the EM/NCO/OFFICERS Clubs:
My two bands ("Six Pack" and "Gordy Thomas and CREW") used to play all around Southern Bavaria. I've written a lot of songs since then, and anyone is welcome to download the free .mp3 files listed on my site at gordythomas.com please disregard the fact that there are also song files for sale on the page, as it is not my intent to get you to buy anything. I just thought some of the FOB (Friends of The Bands) might be interested in hearing what I've been doing in Nashville. And to all combat veterans, "Welcome Home!" |

I was drafted in September 1966 and went to the ASA. After 98J20
training at Ft. Devens, I arrived at Herzo Base on June 6, 1967 just
as the Arab-Israeli war broke out. Company C, 318th Bn was my first
assignment and we were gearing up to head to Israel in support of
the 24th Inf. Division just as I arrived. Fortunately we didn't go.
Not knowing what to do with a 98J, I worked in the supply office. It
was really great duty and I obtained a second MOS as a supply
specialist. Company C rotated to Ft. Riley, KS in the spring of 1968
so I was able to transfer to Company A, 318th BN. Who wanted to
spend 3 years in Ft. Riley, KS? Not me. Although my MOS was 98J20, I
spent most of my time as the company supply sergeant. We went to
"the field" about once a year to test our mobile, i.e. truck mounted
equipment and bone up on our primary MOS skills. The field was
usually a site overlooking the Czech border. I was also TDY a few
times to Rimbach/Mt.Eckstein, Mt. Schneeberg, and Wobeck. That $18
per diem came in handy. My wife, baby daughter, and I lived off base
in the new high rise apartment building on Bunzlauer Str near the
Herzogenaurach airport. ETS from Herzo Base and Co. A in mid-August
1970. That's an amazing 37 + years ago.

Hey,
I just stumbled across this site. I'm from Herzogenaurach and I went to Montessori Elementary School at Herzo Base from 1993 to 1997.This is an interesting site and I would like to make a post, too. Sorry if I make mistakes, English isn't my first language. I could post some pictures of Herzo Base if somebody is interested. OMG, the Herzo Base...There was so much wild life and so much space to play.We kids loved to build houses out of sticks. I remember some friends and I went off one day at a school party and explored the old barracks. Looking back it might have been dangerous, because some of them were a bit torn down already, but back than it was just a huge adventure for us. It was so dark and dusty in there, windows and doors were broken and all kinds of animals were making strange noises. We went into one building that seemed to have been a medical centre. The boys wanted to scare me since I was the only girl and told me that the soldiers might have forgotten someone and we might find a skeleton on a dentist chair or something like that. I was frightened but of course we didn't find a skeleton. Our old school building has been torn down as most of the old barracks. There is a living area at the Herzo Base and they are considering to build a huge shopping area there. And of course Adidas is at the Herzo Base since about 10 years I think. Its their Corporal Headquarter. And MC Donalds is there, too. Greetings from Herzogenaurach, Anni |

gatehouse and the Brigade HQ is torn down. I plan on going back to

Hello all,
I am an Army Brat of SSGT Robert (Bob) Mechtel and his wife Lucy (Peggy). Stationed 1967 to 1970. Attended Erlangen and Neuremburg schools. My parents are alive and well, and I would love to hear from anyone who may remember us. I was heavy into girl scouts (my much younger brother Steve was our mascot) I was also on the cheerleading squad for the mens basket ball team. Also in the dancing class that performed on base at several recitals and for base outings. |
||||||||
|
I was stationed with 2/12 FA from 89 to 92, and was there for the
first part of the drawdown of the base. The best part of the
assignment was the 2 deployments to Crete for live fire of the Lance
system. What a blast. Does anyone know what happened to the Herzo
Golf course? Did it get destroyed like everything else? There was a
lot of good drinking that went on there with Brother George. Those
were good times for sure.
|
||||||||
|
My name is James Cafferty, son of the late LTC James C Cafferty, who
was the Base Commander during 1964-1966. I was born there in June of
1966, but returned to Washington DC soon after. My father passed
away in 1990. I unfortunately did not return to Herzo until about
two years ago and well...not much was left. Where a base was is no
more and Adidas and new homes now stand. I was saddened greatly that
I had waited to long to return.
|
||||||||
|
I arrived at Herzo in Jan. 69 and left in Dec. 71, just before the
Agency left. I'd like to hear from anyone who was there during the
time I was stationed at Herzo. I was on Charlie Trick and spent my
last two years in the Watch Office. Loved my time there, but have
never been back. Would love to.

I'm an army brat who lived in the off base housing from 1972 to
1978. Went to Erlangen elementary, and Nurnberg Jr. High and High
School. Still stay close to a number of NHS Eagles! My dad was
assigned to the 210th FA Group - Sgt. J.R. Gonzales. He worked in
the building immediately to the left of the base entrance and caught
me sneaking onto base one or two times in "inappropriate clothing" -
back then, it was hiphuggers and tiny little shirts tied up high. We
roamed the base all the time - wandering from the AYA to the Gym to
the movie theater. Spent many a day at the ball field to play
softball or watch the boys play sports. Can't even begin to think
how many kilometers I logged riding/walking to the Freibad, duck
pond and other places that got me far away from the view of the
parents! Ever look at the base/housing on Google Earth! WOW! What
changes have occurred. Looking for a good picture of the downtown
area where one could walk under the archway adjacent to the tower?
remember that? Email me if you have pictures!

Seeing the pictures as the base stands now were sad indeed! I was
stationed at Herzo from 87-91 as C-Battery 5/17th FA commander then
as Battalion Motor Officer. I lived in the Fishbowl with my wife,
Jill, daughter Jennifer and son Robby. We all had a great time while
we were there. Glad there is this site to help others reconnect and
relive the glory days of Herzo past!

I was stationed at Herzo Base from April '63 to February '66. My
favorite spot in town was upstatirs at the Grauer Adler with Heidi
serving beer and Goulash Suppe. Wonderful memories of a great little
town and a great bunch of guys from the base. My son was in Germany
and happened to visit the base on the day that the bulldozers tore
down the barracks. A sad story to hear.

Herzo Base. A place where my Mother was stationed. Sgt. Davis. We
had a beautiful time there. I stayed in Germany until 2002, when I
returned to the US. I actually graduated from Nuernberg High in
1988. But right now I am looking for a dear friend of mine, Ladonte
Kornegay. The last I heard of him was he was living in The
Netherlands, Amsterdam, and this was back in 1992-93. We became best
friends, and I miss him dearly. If anyone should happen to know of
him, I would appreciate any information. My life has changed so much
and I'd love find him again. Sincerely, Yvonne

With 318th ASA Bn from fall of 1967 to mid 1961 (just after the
Berlin Wall went up).
Amazing opportunity to cover a lot of Europe at reasonable cost. Wife is in a club which includes the daughter of then Capt John Connell, USAF who was also at Herzo. Young kid in the back yard was Jimmy Clapper, now a retired 3 star Gen. Was back about 10 years ago to visit. |

Was stationed at Herzo Base from Sept 1967 thru Aug 1970. Am trying

from New Jersey, and Michael Ainslie, orginally from San Rafael,
California. I do keep in touch with Joe Bemben (who was from Long
Island, New York).I was assigned to the German part of the ASA. Joe

I am an Army Brat and proud of it! My Dad is Ret. 1SG Michael R.
Huff..with 5/17 and HHB 210. Mom and Dad are living in Lawton, OK.
Our time there was something around 1988 til Jan of 1993. (The
middle of my senior year..that you don't forget!)
Herzo was the last base we were stationed at while in Germany and I have wonderful memories of so many people. We were a very tight group of families since we went through the first round of Dessert Storm. If only we had taken care of business them! I remember working the comissary and saving those great tips for the movies and snack bar. I remember a lot of the bus rides to/from Nurenberg and the wonderful bomb threates we use to have. Ok..so if you remember me,my Dad or even my mother...Vyvienne Huff...email me. I would love to hear from any of you. |

Got a link to this site from my LT,
MAJ Hal Le Brocq who I found from doing a search on the Military.com website. I was a Spec 4 stationed with Bravo Battery, 2nd Battalion, 377th FA (Lance) from 82-84 and have often wondered what happened to Herzo?? Great idea and a great way to get in touch with folks not seen or heard from in a long time. |

Hello y'all!! I was stationed on Herzo Base from January '61 to June
'63 in the 183rd Co. One of my most funniest memories, that I don't
remember, was the time that my room mate couldn't stand my snoring
(after a long 3rd trick!) and he and a few buddies moved me AND my
cot outside along the sidewalk! When it started to rain, they had to
come out and move me back in . . . and I never woke up through the
whole ordeal! What a hoot!! There are lots of great memories from
there, Nurnberg and Munich. It would really be great to see some of
the gang again; Earl Rau, 'Whip' Ronald Wilson, Sid Lichenstein
(Donnell), Paul Vanderstratten and Vic Duran to name a few...

Dependent son of CPT Maurice W Greene (1924-1997). First tour at

assigned in 1949-1950 to the 6th USASAFS and in 1959-1962 to the
318th USASA Sig BN. In 1949-1950 we lived off post in what later
became the enlisted family quarters. And in 1959-1962 in the
Apartment building just inside the front gate. I graduated from
Nurnberg American High School in 1962. I have fond memories of HERZO
and all the ASA units we were assighned to including Camp Wolters TX
(1958-59) and Tokyo Japan (1956-1958).

Are there any other Bravo Battery, 2nd Battalion, 377th FA (Lance)
alumni out there? I just put Alycia Rogers and Linda Getell back in
touch with each other after 20 years! I've also been in contact with
LT Dennis Reilly, LT Angel Acevedo, CPT Andre Benoit, 1SG William
Dunn, SFC Lucky Wirtz and SFC Thomas Beirne. I understand SFC Fred
Pollard is still in Lawton. Does anyone have any contact with CPT
Thomas Woodley, LT Andrew Tye, or SFC Clyde Ross? LT Chet Moore
passed away in 1987, God rest his soul. I'm sure I've omitted many
others, but contact me because I'm really bad with names.

As an Army brat I loved the place. Hung out at the gym,

WOW! As I looked through the records I was only able to locate a
couple that brought back the memories of "Bump City". Yes I was
there from 88-92. SSG Willy Williams was the man. Those that
remember the day we were training at the back gate and I managed to
take the top gun award. Anybody remember SGT Ruiz? I see him still
and he is a Major now.

I was with the Air Force detachment stationed on Herzo from June,
1960, to Sept, 1962. We operated a radar site at Mausdorf, Germany,
about 15 miles from Herzo. I played all the sports on base, had some
army dispensary guys on our team, had a good army pal named Tyson,
who ran the Gym, one hell of a pitcher for his army team, overall,
had a great time there, met many good guys, local people, hung out
at Kerns (gasthaus) in Herzo, will always remember Herzo Base.

My Dad is Elliott aka Strikey and my Mom is Jean Rogers. We were in
Herzo in the 60's. We lived a mile or so off base in the non
commissioned pats. I remember the field where where we looked for
frogs, the chickens behind the apts, the smell of the dump, and my
best friend Mary Decker. I have an older sister BJ, a brother David
and sister Debbie who was a baby then. I was born in 1955....anyone
from that time in Herzo remember the same stuff or my family? I have
SO many memories, to many to list here. Sadly, no pictures.

Hello fellow Herzo Base veterans and their family members. Herzo
Base was my first active duty assignment after FA Officer Basic
Course. I went from a brand new 2nd LT to CPT during the 5 years I
was stationed there. I also met and married my wife, a fellow
officer there named Opal Omura. We've been married for almost 23
years now and have 3 teenage sons. I started in B Battery, 2/377th
FA, spent a year at 210th FA Bde headquarters in the S-1 section,
then went back to B Battery, 2/377th FA as the XO/A&T Plt leader,
culminating with a command of C Battery, 2/377th FA. My wife and I
met so many great officers, NCOs, and soldiers there, and will
always cherish those memories. I was there for 3 Brigade Commanders:
COL Jerome Granrud, COL Charles Hood, and COL Clifton Potter. I also
saw four 2/377th FA Battalion Commanders: LTC Harold Nelson, LTC
Edward Alexander, LTC Charles Feldmayer, and LTC Robert Kimball. I
was at Herzo Base from January 1982 through April 1987. I will never
forget Herzo Base, and would be interested in hearing from those who
knew me. I was hoping to one day take my sons there to show them
where their mother and I met, but it appears there is not much left
to see, but maybe one day anyway.

Hello to all herzo base vets. I was assigned to hhb 3/37th FA from
december 1980 to november 1981 and was then transfered to brigade hq
to work in the comm center . Them wonderful old teletype machines.
It was supposed to be temporary duty but the major told my lt. that
he was stealing me away . So i got to work at brigade hq for my last
7 months. One good friend that i remember from brigade was lolitha
walker . I am not sure about her first name but she was married to a
soldier in the lance missle battalion . Good friends from
headquarters battery 3/37th FA was paul solis, billy jo tanner,jA
moore and many more. It was neat to finally get google earth and see
herzo base from space. Before i googled for info i could tell that it
had changed alot. I hope to hear from old friends and any other
herzo vets . Grauer kater , kerns cafe , we were really lucky to be
stationed in such a beautiful area.

I was assigned to HHC 3-37th FA from 74-76. I know when the 210th
Lance Unit was there. The site map brought back good memories.
Nothing much as change based on the map. I knew exactly my barrack's
location. Front gate is the give away looks the same. Still have old
company photo of the guys in the unit.

In a busy life, it is nice to stop and remember. I was at Herzo Base
from March 1962 to March 1964 then finished up at Arlington Hall
Station. Upon my leaving the service, I went back to school on the
GI bill and received my law degree. I am still practicing law but
close to retirement.
I have been back to Germany many times and will return in May of this year for a wedding of one of my exchange sons in Cologne then off to Prague for a week or so. Married a photographer who has her own Pro Lab and does free lance photography which has taken us to Romania to photograph the girls at the Olympic Gymnastic training center at Deva, a wedding in Ploiesti, Romania and with her for travel photography all over Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Amsterdam. Was back to Herzogenaurach probably 10 times but only to the Base twice, once when it was still functioning as an army base and once when it was open as the Adidas headquarters. Many friends in my mind but gone from my reach. Hopefully some will see this and reply. Mel |

Great site. I was assigned to the Herzo Base Dispensary from Nov.
1960 thru Oct. 1962. Permanent assignment was the 20th Station
Hospital in Nurnberg. Loved the downtown area, especially the
Rosegarten, Cafe Adler and the Mauser. I visited again in 2000 with
some friends and my son and found it very enjoyable. Since we were
not assigned to any of the ASA units we participated in sports with
the Air Force personnel whose barracks were right down the street
from the dispensary.

Hello fellow Herzo-Heads. This is John Young. I was at Herzo March

Hi there. I am German and from Herzogenaurach - living now close to
Philadelphia.
I always liked the American/Germany friendship festival at the HerzoBase and I have good memories. I was in Herzogenaurach for xmas and I think most of you wouldn't recognize it. Yeah - time is changing a lot but believe me in Herzogenaurach to the worst (but I still miss it). Does anybody know the old Brauerei Hubmann in the Hauptstrasse ? The two brothers are my best friends ? I also loved the Sommerkirchweih.... |

Greetings to ALL
I spent some of the best and most memorable years of my life on Herzo Base. I arrived in 1968 and left early in 1972. During that time I married my high school sweetheart in the base chapel, worked with a great group in the comm center and grew up a lot. We lived in Neiderndorf and continue a lifelong friendship with many of our German neighbors and friends. We visit routinely and have watched Herzo Base as it has changed. How fitting to see a place with such a history end up as the Adidas Sports Village. We will be visiting again this October. I would love to hear from any Field Stationers and comm center 72B's that were there 68 to 72. David |

Station at Herzo Base 1978-1980. Funny how a place I hated so much
while stationed there became a fond old memory. But, then again,
ones perspective at 19 or 20 is somewhat different from how we view
life in our mid 40s. I was part of "F" battery, 29th Field
Artillery. Yes, I remember Graf, and Schwienfurt quite well. For me,
going out on training was the best time since we were outside and
had something (more or less) to do.
|
||||||||
|
My Father was stationed in herzo from I think 76-78. I still

My father was stationed at herzo from 1979 to 1982. I had heard that
it was closed, I am planning a trip back next year and was searching
for info and found your site. I have a lot of pictures of herzo,
when the new year slows I will scan and post them. Herzo has alot of
good memories.

Spent five years between Herzo and WO Darby. I think I like Darby
the best. You were always close to everything there.

Hello from Erlangen!
My name is Martin Seeliger. I live in Erlangen since 1973, and i was born in hospital in Erlangen. My story: I was adopted from a german woman who can´t get children. From my first time, she told me this story, my mother was married in Herogenaurach and came from cech-republik, she was a ballett-dancer. My father was a soldier (her lover) and he worked at Herzobase or in Erlangen at Ferries Barracks in the year 1972. He must be from Puerto-Rico !And i´m the product from this love. I was born on 17.02.1973. Please, help me, when you can give me some informations about my father. Good luck for the next year, i hope i read from you, tanks, |
