Was at JB 77-78 I think it was C company our building faced
Headquarters to the left was the PX and Club.
Went on REFORGER 78 plus a lot of Graf ect. Black motorpool PLt
Sarge I think we called him Budda. I sold my VW Bug to a e-5
dork after me and 7 other guys went to a Nazarath concert. On
the way back I blew the engine. Just after I sold it the guys
threw it half way into a dumpster. Just remember one guy
Goodbird or something like that. A few miles out was our local
downrange we would go on alert and bug out there. Thank God we
never had the ballon go up. Lots of stuff to remember.

I was stationed at Johnson Barracks,Assigned to Headquarters
Company,24th Engineer Battalion, from 1966 thru 1969. I was a
Specialist#5 E-5. Initially, I was Battalion Mail Clerk, and
later in the Adjutants Office as Courts & Boards Clerk, doing
court martials. In personal time I was a guitarist and played
with various groups in Germany.

was a journeyman 12B at JB from 1985 - 1987, most of it in CC
Rock 1st platoon then in MCM.
Good to see CC Rock well represented on this board, especially
Sgt. Shick (I'm still sorry to this day the cadre made you carry
that heavy rock for my goof-up at PCT in 1986). I remember
Willey, Maestas, Grobusch, and was hoping to find Romer and the
others.
Gotta say 1986 was an incredible year for me in 1st platoon - we
did PCT then got that luxury guard duty in Garmisch. Hope to
hear from the rest of you.

converted to civilian housing.

Hello everyone! I'm Dirk Sullivan or you might remember me as
SGT Sullivan I was at Johnson Barracks from 80-82 E Company AVLB
crew. We had some good times together. I have many great
memories while at Johnson and it was most definitely some of the
best times of my life. I had to pull out the old pics to
remember some of the names. I will try to post some of these
pics on the site. Some of the AVLB gang you might remember? SFC
Moske, SGT Felts, SSG Herman, SGT Gomez, SGT Dugger, PVT Rysavy,
PFC Eddy, PVT Rivera? Others I can't remember since my memory is
fading, sorry. Studies show that good German beer does help
reduce memory loss. Drink more beer!!! I say " PROST" to my old
buddies from Johnson!!! You guys ROCK!

16th Engineers Btn. in Fürth from 1983-1987; I left in July '87
for the States and decided to give it up in May '88 after
achieveing my personal goal. I then returned to Nbg.-Fürth area
where I still live yet today and doing just great. Like
mentioned in the forum from the Barracks is absolutely nothing
left over, all built up new. My favorites were Sgt. Jackson,

I was in the 16th Engineers from the 84-85. I was a 12F but I
can't remember what company I was in. My 1st sgt was 1st sgt
Gillery(I hope this is the correct spelling). I used to play
golf at a post not far from JB. Some of the people I remember
are: Bill Starcher, Sgt Neadeux, and Pvt Guerro to name just a
few. I remember a very funny Samoan that used to say, "do you
wanna beef bro" can anyone remember his name?
lgald@yahoo.com (Louis):
if it was C co there was a 12f named sgt taufeetee and he
used to hang out with a big samoan dude, they would work out
together in the little gymn we had there. I remember it was
hard for anyone to work out cause them boys would have the
bar loaded down with all the weights. I used to work out
with Chuck (Conan) and when sgt. taufeetee was in there we
would have to wait cause there werent anymore weights left:)

Then went to C Co as Supply Sgt. Cpt Watson & Red headed, freckle

I was stationed at Johnson Barracks in Company B in 1959-1960.
We all had a great time there. It is almost 50 years ago. It
doesn’t seem possible. At that time it was the 24th Engineer
Battalion. I was with Company B. Our platoon Sergeant was Sgt.
Washington We were using M-1 Rifles at that time. Check out my
picture of the M-1 Rife Inspection on our bunks. The commander
of the battalion at that time was Lt. Col. Pearse. We nick named
him (Axe Handle) because carried an axe handle instead of a
swagger stick. We set a record at that time for building and
crossing the Danube with a pontoon bridge (1 hr and 29 minutes)
I wonder if that record is still standing. It doesn’t seem
possible that Johnson Barracks is no long there. I don’t
remember any canals on Schwabacker Strasse.
Does anyone remember the beer garden bar in back of Johnson
Barracks on the way to the main PX. We called it the garden.
Does anyone know when they built canals on Schwabacker. I don’t
remember and canals maybe my memory is failing. This is a great
site. It brings back a lot of memories.
Mike G.:
I enjoyed your pictures, I was stationed at Johnson Barracks
from '77 - '79 and then again from '82 - '85. I believe the
canal was started in the mid-sixties and finished in the
early seventies. Take Care - |

Thought it might be interesting to relate how I found this site.
Last year Dec'08-Jan'09 my wife & I were backpacking in
N.Vietnam on the Chinese border. Riding on a local bus loaded
with about 100 Vietnamese was 1 other foreigner, he was my age,
German & born & raised in Zirndorf right beside Pinder Bks. I
told him I was at JB 1976-79 & he knew it well. He used to go to
Open House during Ger-American Days back then. He took a room in
the same hotel & for the next 2 days he & I talked about Furth,
Nbg & JB & he told stories how JB was gone, Pinder too although
they left the orig. gate standing, the Darby Housing Area was
now apts & other stuff. Patrizier Beer was bought-out by Tucher
although Das Gute Zirndorfer is still going. He said his
favorite fussball club today was near the old PX site & we
discussed where it was but the only one I could recall was in
the Housing Area which you'd pass when taking the back way
shortcut to the Main PX from JB. I remember stopping in there
once to collect the deckel. Before we parted he dug in his pack
& gave me a souvenir matchbox that read PX Sport Club Furth.
When I got down to Hanoi I went to the Search Engine, typed in
Johnson Bks & found this site. Small world, huh?

My first duty assignment was as a 12F, with C Co 16th Engr Bn at
Johnson Barracks from Jan 1981 to Feb 1984. I was assigned to
3rd Plt and would like to see if any of my old buddies are still
around. ie: SGT Efrain Burgos, Sd Ldr, PFC Asevero (Trinidad and
Tobago), PVT Gutierrez, PFC Myers, SFC Henderson, PVT Daughtery,
PFC Gonzalez (Would always cry when he got druck). Good old
times running through the canal, going down town to eat and
drink, and stopping by the PX at WO darby (Kaserne) I think this
is how it is spelled. Oh, before I forget I want to say hi! to
my friends from "El conjunto Boricua" we used to play Puerto
Rican music at the Enlisted club at Johnson barracks. My
nickname at that time was "Coamito". Any way, take care buddies
and God bless you all!

I was in C Company with Randy Norris, Dan Flanders, Clyde
Strickland among others from 7/77-7/79. Does anyone remember
O'Brien (he was either Irish or English) who worked in R & U,
and if you do, whatever happened to him? Randy Norris is the
only one that I have been in touch with, and I heard once from
Don Bebo, Rick Wright and a couple of others from the company
for that time frame. Hope to hear from some of you. Cheers!
Stan, Medics 77-79:
He was English. I know this because he would wander over to
the dispensary and bug John McDade who is Irish. They would
have the most funniest arguments. |
Mark Ballance:
Stan,
Do you by chance know whatever happened to O'Brien? He
always wanted me to go to the U.K. with him and visit his
family. I regret that I didn't go with him; he was such a
blast. He used to call me Ballie.
There also was a Spec 5, rather tall individual with blonde
hair and slender, who was a medic in the battalion. I can't
remember his name. He along with a number of other medics on
every monday afternoon after last formation those of us who
were lucky enough to be in the fatman's program would weigh
in. He spoke up for me when a number of us would have to go
in front of LtC Kouns with our weight progress. What was his
name and whatever happened to him as well.
Thanks for the previous information about O'Brien.
Cheers! |
Stan:
No I do not know where O'Brien went after those days.
We had a spec 6 whose name was Linderman, Then there was
Keith StAlbin.

Hello to all,
I frequently reminisce of the years spent at Johnson Barracks. I
was assigned to Charlie Company from 1987-1989.
There are many guys I'd like to get in touch with from those
days and I was very excited to see Louis aka "G-Man" message
posted here.
Louis, I'll send you an email today.
My hopes are that everyone and their families are well and that
every man who served in the 16th has had a happy, successful
life.

Worked in the supply unit since the boss discovered I was able

it was a sat and we sat in the room, about 8 of us, and watched

I remember everyone kept the caps from the longnecks in a cup
and we counted them b4 we went out:).
I've been searching for Joe Chapman, Chris Sorenson, Troy
O'neil, Charles Caudle (conan, he was a 12B). also used to run

his first name was Steve. All, no greater b-day present for me

I was stationed At Johnson Barracks from 1988-91. It was without
a doubt the best time I had in my Military career. Nurnberg was
a beautiful place to be stationed. Does the 16th Engineer Bn.
still exist? I used to eat at a little family owned restaurant
named the Doozier. Best food in Germany.
aaron:
i was in W O Kaserne and JB from 91-92. I wasnt an Engineer
back then but am now. Yes 16th exsists after the move from
Furth it went to Erlangen then to Gießen, Gießen closed and
16th is now reflagged as separated Engineer companies in 1
AD at FT. Bliss. If you ever have a chance to go back to
Furth it is all but gone it is a sad moment. I live in
Schweinfurt now and the days of Nurnberg, Furth, and
Erlangen are distant memories for most that live in those
cities.

Any of you guys who were in A-co in 82 remember Larry Tieman
jumping out of the 2nd story and shattering his ankle cause 1st
Sgt Hargroves was going to make him go to the field for missing

the army made him stay in until he rehabed LOL

said..."YEA"...he had to ride a bicycle to the

kasernes during those times, I would love to hear from ya'll. I
was with 240th QMS and I was in POL. My nickname was "GG", I
rode my bycycle alot, and dated the Turk named Mat who was a bus

Mark Ballance,
I could be wrong, but did you not get out of the Army in '78 or
'79 and then go back in about a year later ending up at the
construction engineer outfit on main post Ft Lewis? If so I
remember riding across post with (I think Joe Lazott) to say
hey. I was in HQ Plt I believe. SFC Tollinger was my platoon
sergeant (he's running aroung fayetteville somewhere) and then
SFC Froehle. I used to hang with Diego Estrada sometimes, then
Dalton and a few others. But I'm sure I remember you.
Mike
Mark Ballance:
Mike,
I got out of the army in July of 1979, my mother had
terminal cancer and passed away one day after I got out. I
did want to come back after the funeral and look around for
work, but that never happened. I ETS'd due in part to Gen.
Bernard Rodgers (Army Chief of Staff) & Ltc. Darrel Koons
(16th EB Cdr) persicution of those of us who were considered
over-weight. I had to wait for two years if I wanted to
reenlist. By that time I had such a chip on my shoulder it
wasn't funny. But you know, I really have some great
memories of the C company, 16th EB, JB, Fuerth, Nuermberg,
W. Germany, & the rest. Anyway...have you kept in contact
with any of the other men in the company or any of the
others at JB? It is good to hear from you, hope all is
well...& Catamounts forever! |
Mark:
Ok, now I think I got you. I think I even have a pic
somewheres of the Bertchesgaden retreat volksmarch. I ought
to dig it out. I know you were at the retreat. |
Mark:
Yes, most definately. That retreat was unbelieveable. Capt
(Father) Berry was the battalion chaplin. That man had a
wicked sense of humour.
Do you or does anyone know the where abouts of SSG Harry
Wilmot, he too was on that retreat. I cannot for the life of
me remember which platoon he was in. And how about SSG
Clifford Westburg; I can only imagine that alot of these
guys have passed on.
As Bob Hope said/sang at the end of his shows: "Thanks, for
the memories..."
Cheers! |
Mark::
Last time I saw SSG Wilmot (who was my squad leader in '78)
was in 1984 in Wildflicken and he mentioned he was going to
retire in about a year, that was the last.
|
Mark Ballance:
Mike,
Did SSG Wilmot ever mention what state he was from, or where
he was going to retire to? I lost contact with him about a
year after I left the army. |

Mike, in C company, what platoon were you in. I'm really
trying to place you. I found some of my pictures, but it but
not as many as I would have liked to have hung on to.

Hey Bebo, I just found this site & have been reliving old days
at JB. What a trip to see photos of old friends. I'm Lester the
Fester, was in HHC from '77-'79, S4 driver, 1st the jeep, then
Dufield's TMP after he ETS'd, & later on the M577A1. Recall good
times with you. Once we were at the German-US beer fest, you
were picking on an MP calling him Fish-head. Soon the whole
table was hollering at the MPs who came over at fest end &
kicked ass. Everyone got away but me who was too wasted so I
spent night in Darby jail. Plenty of partying with Norwood,
Steiner, Boatwright, Latusek, Libby, Ross, etc. Once a bunch of
us went up to party on the canal, carved our names on the
railing of the bridge, I went back to JB in '82 & the names were
still there, inc. yours. Don't often think of those days so it's
been fun reliving them. No doubt, the 16th was an animal house
wild never-ending party, likely never repeated again.
Don Bebo Sacramento CA.:
Hey Lester, How are ya? I told Norwood about this web site
and that you sent an e-mail. He said to tell you Hello. If
you send me an e-mail i will give you his ph.# my e-mail is
DoninCA@msn.com Norwood is still in Denver CO. We had some
good time's in Germany Talk to ya later, D. Bebo

HHC 84-88 Worked in the Motor Pool
Jim Lamaster:
georgie whats up? |
Johnny Chestnut:
George,
Hello. You probably don't remember me. I was in S-4, HHC
from May 1987-May 1989. I worked for SFC Davis in the Ammo
section. I lived on the second floor near the exit closest
to the chow hall. My room mates changes a couple of times.
They were, Duval, Cox, Davis and Townsend. You, Lamaster and
Chris Massey were already there when I arrived. I found this
site on Johnson Barracks. Its strange how I wanted to leave
that place when I was 18 and now I wish I could go back and
relive it. Well anyway it was cool to see you guys in the
pictures. Take care. |
Jim Lamaster:
Hey Johnny, whats going on. Long time. Here is my email
jlamaster@suddenlink.net i would love to hear from you.

hey boys i was at johnson barracks from 76-79. Randy do you
remember the first days we got there and me you and clyde
painted our room?
Randy Norris Go Buckeyes!:
I'll never forget those first days as newbies or anything
else we did at JB. Had to coax the base paint from supply,
(but we had connections, right?)and then tint it to that
blue color we decided on. Over thirty years ago, and still
have great memories. Like, Led Zeppelin - who you convinced
me is the only band that matters. And knowing that you and
Clyde were the best drivers/friends in the battalion who I
could call on anytime to go anywhere. |
Mark Ballance:
Hay Dan, do you remember bridge ex '77 and the company
holding up in a little town named Vonfurt? A lot more
memories I have tucked away in the back of my demented
little mind. Randy Norris and I talked back in I believe
July. The last time I saw you, you were heading back to
Danville, VA; how did you end up in Albany, NY? It's great
to see you're still alive and kickin'. Cheers!
|
Mark Ballance:
By-the-way, have either you or Randy Norris heard from Clyde
Strickland? Do you have his email address or phone number?
|
jeff:
check military.com clyde strickland is listed there. look

I was just thinking about the army and the good and bad times I
had at Johnson Barracks so I searched for Furth Germany and to
my surprise found this site. I was stationed there from 81-83 in
Echo Company. I was a mechanic in their motor pool. Sgt.
Spellman was our motor sargent he was the biggest #%*$-hole you
could ever meet. Right as I was leaving in August of 83, he
became the Battalion cwo in charge of all the motor pools. Im
sure even all the engineers in E. company remember Spellman. He
rode this one puerto rican so hard he flipped out one day in the
field and would have killed Spellman had it not been for about
four men holding him down. I remember a Helicopter coming in and
taking him away that was the last we saw of him I dont remember
his name but some of the people I do like Bill Burns,Neal Moore,
Ray cerie, Joe brofy,Ernie White, Mike stone just to name a few.
It would be nice to hear from someone I knew back then and oh
yes I remember the PT runs down the canal.
