I was assigned to the 371 AIB in Jan 1955-Dec 1957 when the unit
moved to Worms, Germany.
I was first assigned to Delta Company as an infantry man. The
Company Commander was Capt Mohler who was a WWII battle field
commissioned officer. The XO was a West Point Grad Lt Bringham.
I was sent to the Ordinance Supply NCO school and being the only
PFC in the class, shoveled a lot of snow during the breaks. Upon
returning to the unit I was assigned to the HHC S4 section as
the ordinance supply clerk. I later became the chief clerk and
then the Asst Battalion supply Sgt. In the S4 section I worked
for CWO Reynolds & BN supply Sgt SFC Briggs.
I extended for 6 months to help the unit move to Worms.
Many a happy memory from Merrill Barracks. I think it's the best
place I was ever assigned.
Of note: Seventeen years later I was assigned to the 2nd ACR 1st
Sqdn at Bindlach (as a CWO) and the Regimental HQ was at Merrill
Barracks.
My Son and I visited Germany in May 2009 and I did a memory lane
visit to Nurnberg. Nothing is the same, but my memories are of
the good times I had while assigned to Merrill Barracks.

Late 69 to early 71: I was with 182nd LEM. I was in the move
from Darby to Merrell, traded places with the 42nd HEM as I
recall. Then they moved our billets from one side of Merrell to
the other. I played on the company softball team & the German
club soccer team made up of guys from the 182nd. Roomed with
Gary Conners, Terry Horwath, Tony Barilone, others. Sometimes
referred to as Steam or Vapor, tendency to disappear. Played
ball & soccer with guest #125, How you doing Hawk.

Was stationed with A btry 3/17FA from Oct76 to Jan82. Was on SSG
Sanders gun for the first couple months. Moved to the Ammo
section under Sgt Shaw for awhile. Then moved to Special Weapons
under Sgt Bobby Finger. Stayed in special weapons, becomiing
squad ldr until the fall of 81 when I became Bn special weapons
NCO/ S-2 clerk. I was with A btry in Graf when a bad fuze caused
a premature detenation and blew the muzzle brake and 4' of the
barrel off. Remember Range Control calling on the net that only
5 rounds impacted and the commander (I think it was Cpt McKenty)
calling back and asking if Range Control had seen the muzzle
brake impact. The best times I remember are at Nicko's and the
fests. Though the pizzas from across the street really hit the
spot.

I was a medic with HHB 3/5th FA in Merrell from Feb 1984-Jul 85,
assigned to Alpha Battery. They say "you can't go home again"
and that saying is true. I returned to Nurnberg 20 years to the
day I left, to drop someone off at the airport(My unit was
supporting a big exercise in Graf, summer of 05). I guess I
expected things to look the same, of course it didn't. Driving
around still brought back old memories though, especially when I
drove to an ex-girlfriend's house, my heart still raced like it
did 20 years before but, I didn't knock on her door(somethings
are best left in your memories). Merrell and Nurnberg will
always hold a place in my heart and mind.

Hey everyone, Merrell Barracks was my first duty assignment.
Reading all these blogs brings back great memories. I was there
from 84 - 86 with the 45th Ordance Co. worked as a 76C up above
the mess hall SSG Rebone and Sgt. Barber were my boss. Did
anyone do the gate guard duty for three months? 3 days at night,
3 at day, and 3 off. Best duty I ever had, except dealing with
all you drunks coming in at night! lol Garcia was my running
partner during gate guard duty, can' remember his first name
anymore. We stopped at the Shell station a lot on our way to the
dussendikes! Hung out with Al McLean (meathead)love that guy,
was my best friend back then. Also hung out with Scott King,
Pete McConnell (spelling of last name??), Fred and Michael
Jackson. Anyone remember these guys? Sgt Fant?? Drop me a line
if you remember me or just to relive memories!
Andre Dolhyj, PE:
I was the 2nd platoon ldr, at that time, Andre Dolhyj, PE

I survived Merrell Barracks April 1975 to June 1981. 116th
Ordnance Company. I started out as a Shillelagh repairman on
contact teams. Got busted for Hash and moved to the shop. I
moved over to shop supply after that. Remember the screens on
the 2nd floor (shop) of the messhall? Bob Nesvenski and I but
them in one summer. I went down to the NCR 500 vans and did
stock until my final job as the training NCO. I worked in the
chapel after I was busted. I was married in the chapel 1980. The
Frau's family still there and so is Merrell but it is nowhere
the hotel it used to be.

I was stationed at Merrell 73-75 and 77-80 with the 166th Ord. I
have some my best memories from that time. I was a 27E worked in
the dungeon below the bowling alley, above it, and above the
mess hall during my time there. I made some great friends during
that time unfortunately with the passage of time we have lost
contact and have moved on with our lives. I would like to say hi
to FSGT Dougee, John (Jack) Hoffman, Stan Layhew, Ray Salinas,
Kirk Kuykenall, Jack Stewart, Fred Kasten, Kevin Cass, and
especially my good friends Gene Gomez, David Lavers, and Charles
Womack who I think of often. There are many more of you but not
enough room to mention everyone. I hope to visit Nurnberg next
year during my travels. :-)
Cecil Simpson:
Ed, Wow!What memories. (I think you made a typo, it was the
116th not 166th) I was a 27E also. Worked under the bowling
alley, Hoffman was my 1st Platoon Sgt. I was the 1979 to
1991. I met up with Hoffman years later when he was the
Commandant at Redstone. I remeber Gomez Womack Nomad. I
remeber we used to call them No No, Wo Wo and Go Go.

Hi everyone was wondering if anyone remembers me I was with the
182nd Maint co 77-79
Ken Snyder:
I remember you! Somewhere I have a picture of you helping me
paint my room with Steve Kidwell. I can't seem to find any
of the pictures right now, I'll have to look harder. I've
lost contact with everyone from that time =( Somewhere I
even have one of those Company pictures with everyone in it.
I've been back to Merrell once since I've been out of the
Army. The last time was about a year and a half ago. They've
torn down the old LEM shop. What a loss! The shop that I
worked in use to be the Officer's Mess. The celing had a
hand stained depiction of the Old City with all of the major
land marks on it. I remember finding it one day while
buffing the wooden floors while, I just happened to look up
in an expression of disgust and being facinated with this
discovery. Apperently no one else had taken the time to
check out the what had been above them all of these years.
You could barely make it out through all of the nicotine
smoke stains. The majority of my time was spent on the 3rd
floor corner room but, my last 8 months I got bumped from
room to room. Sleazy Pete's is still there. On my last visit
I was taking a picture of the front gate, I changed views to
get a picture of the old pizza place. When I got to a place
where I could review my pictures was when I noticed the
owner standing out in front of the place actually flipping
me off! I laughed pretty hard at that. I'm sure that his
location is no longer the money maker that it once was.
There are no lines of stoned GI's gobbling up his mediocre
pies! |

many others. Could probably remember more if I hadn't smoked and

Someone told me Merrell was torn down some time back

Rich,
I was in HHB 3/17, the same years you were there, I was in

to remember. Seems as if there was a platoon SFC Faulkner, I
can barely remember survey much less commo. Lots of Graf,
loading and unloading gamma goats in the quadrangle. Really
good times. |

names, though yours sounds familiar). Who was the guy that

I was stationed at Merrell with the 116th Ord Co from May 78
through May 80. Drove by Merrell a couple of months ago (March
2009) and was sad to see all the changes. I was kind of hoping I
could go inside the building, but that was not possible. Spent
the rest of the day in the old city eating bratwurst, ginger
cookies, and seeing the sights. Remember the castle, the
dungeon, and those impressive churches? Fortunately, that all
looked the same and reminded me of how much fun we had thirty
years ago.

Had a great MWR relationship, with that feisty German (Kraut,
:-), greenskeeper of Soldier's Field, Paul Reuss, unfortunately
died 18 years ago.
We had great times at SF.
Tina Turner, Billy Joel, etc. concerts, and the Noris 200 Miles
of Nuernberg Car Races.
Paul got really pissed off (he had three German Shepherds),
which failed "police academy", Xenia, Xaro, and Xealia."
Xenia developed a "love" for my then 11 year old son, and
wouldn't follow Paul's commands. She followed him, David
everywhere.
The 34 Towers were not meant as prisoner cells for "Allied
Prisoners" i.e. Churchill, Stalin, the Queen, Roosevet, etc.
They (4) were power stations for the floodlights. The rest were
for the "EM" Swine, I mean You've got 120K guys drinking all
night in Nuernberg, they have got to P**s somewhere.
But, where with the exception of 4, for Officers reserved
toilets; they had seats.

do they let anybody go and visit Merrell today? Me and a few

just would knock on the window and we would let them in. back
door kind thing.
Love this site.
Doug Schnider:
Bearl,
I tried getting in through the front gate but it is pretty
tightly controlled. It is an immigration holding area, so
understandable.
However, last September I walkedthe front of Merrell down by
the corner where the Theater and Snack bar were (both still
there but in disarray) There is an opening and I walked
right on in the back way.Made it to the front exit gate
before I was questioned and had to leave. Told them I didn't
know I couldn't enter from where I did because it wasn't
marked. When I explained I was stationed there (73-74) they
actually looked the other way and let me walk out the front
gate. So, I would say if you just want to sit and look you
probably could sit in that corner by the Theater all day
long as that part of Merrell isn't in use. Good luck.

Reforger I was my worst nightmare! Never have I been so cold
and miserable. Was with 66th HEM, searching the backroads
for jeeps and tanks that found themselves in a snow bank or
with a track thrown. Was able to convince the sarge that I
was the best choice to take care of the tents, keep the pot
bellies full of fuel (even if I had to steal it) and
maintaining the C-ration inventory. No more frozen hands and
feet in the middle of the night. Best part was I got to
trade for the "ration choice of the day" and kept my
favorites to myself. Never knew there was that much snow on

Great site!
Came to Merrell from 3d Squadron at Amberg in the Fall of 1964
as a captain & left June 1965; served as Regimental
Communications Officer. Shortly after arrival an Artillery
soldier found a BMW motorcycle in an underground motor pool, got
it up in parts via a ventilation shaft and drove it around
Nurnberg. Said there were 9 motorcycles (3 w/sidecars), light
trucks & halftracks at that place. Also remember the 13 1/2
steel beer can antenna our guys designed and put on top of
Regimental HQ Bldg; it gave first time ever direct FM contact
with 2d Squadron. Equipment included 26D rigs, even an old 26C.
Great bunch of soldiers who worked very hard and could always be
counted on to do their jobs and solve sudden problems in an
innovative way.

Great to see a site about Merrell Barracks. Was in the 182nd
Maintenance Company from 1983 - 1985 (sent us to Ferrel in 85,
right before I left). I bitched a lot about my 4 years in the
Army, but what great memories: Lot's of rock concerts (Hemerlein
Hall), skiing, "The Fest" and trying to pick-up fraulines (Green
Goose, Rock House, Fuckin-A) and dare I say the "Wall". All that
in two years!!! Anyone else out there?

I was a dependent whose husband was in the 84th Engineers

Nurnberg until around April of 85 or so, then moved to Bayreuth
for some reason. The guys had a barracks there, but we traveled
to Bindlach to go to the post, etc. At least, I think I remember

 I was at the 182nd maint. co in 1974 - 1975. I was in the
Generator dept. I remember Jim Gray,"Cucumber" Culbetson,
"Big"Jim Reid, Sgt. Bedwell, Mata, Sgt Hahn from Motor pool(got
a ide on his Harley, Steven Metcalf, Adami(mail Clerk), Mike
Brown, Mike Gardner, Tim Jannzen, Effy Fausu, Kevin Purcell,
Company Commander - Capt Phillips then Capt Raimondi. I lived
off post in a "party" apt. I rented an apt with Mike Brown and a
few other guys off and on. I dated a girl named Ulrike Hartmann.
I should have married her. Does anybody have any infomation
about Ulrike Hartmann? She lived with her parents and an older
sister near the Bahnhof - I used to go on "Sunday drives" in the
county with her family. She started dating a guy named McDonald
after I left. I think it was Doug McDonald and he had a twin
brother also in the 182nd. My Step brother and his friend
visited me in Nurenburg, They were long hairs from "the
world".They partied with everyone. I will never forget "New
Years Eve". Fireworks everywhere and cheap. Firing rockets down
the hallways of the barracks, pissing off the CQ.
Ken Snyder:
I must have gotten there just after you left. I took over
the mail room from Metcalf just before he ETS'ed I delivered
"Goldie" Hahn's Harley parts to him after he got them back
from the chromer in the states. WOW! these are some names
that I've not heard in quite some time. I was there from
77-79 and love the whole tour! I can't help you with the
location of anyone but, I can tell you that Sleezy Pete's
Pizza just across from the main gate is still there, saw it
just a year and a half ago!! I was taking a picture of the

Hello;
My ex husband (PFC Gary Platt)was stationed at Merrell Barracks
from 1971 through 1974. He was with D Company 71st Maintenance
and we both had a great time traveling around Europe while he
was stationed there. Of course, we made lots and lots of friends
too. I remember Art Worman, and Clark & Sylvia Mayhew, and the
two twin brothers (one was named Charlie) and the two good
friends who were from Springfield, Indiana (they were so into
the stereo equipement)and there was a really fun guy whose last
name was Bendig/Bending??? I worked in the special order
department with a retired Sergeant Major Schaffer?? I WOULD LOVE
TO HEAR FROM ANY OF THESE FOLKS...AND I AM SURE MY EX WOULD TOO.
OH his sergeant
was a really nice guy who was married from a lovely woman from
Juneau, Alaska and they had several terrific boys (and we bought
their VW BUG from them--red).
Here is hoping I hear from someone..

Headquarters Company 2nd Armored Cavalry Worked switchboard and
desk clerk in Comm Center and also on the Commo Wire Team.
Loved some bar downtown where Millie was the most beautiful
waitress. Across the street from the kaserne (up on the theater
end) was a restaurant that made awesome schnitzel sandwiches -
used to scale the wall at night for shortcut.
The Volksfest was the best time and the outdoor restaurant by
the Dutzendyke (sp?).

I worked for SSG Reese for a while under the bowling alley then
moved to SSG Peterson's shop. I remember one time SSG Peterson
said, "I don't care what you guys call me", so Murphey started
calling him sweet daddy pete. Pretty funny at the time. I
remember that Sgt Peterson was the manager of the NCO club too.
SFC Millard was my platoon Sgt. He seemed kind of strict to me
at the time but looking back I have a hell of a lot of respect
for him.
I'll never forget the burgers at the PX annex. You could eat one
of those and then taste it all day. Burger King had nothin on
them. I remember the Pizza stand across the street too, we used
to call it Sleazy Pete's. You could get a pretty good pizza back
then for five marks. Ah, such fond memories of the food.

What a great site! I was in HHT 2ACR, Commo, from 1975-1976,
Merrell Barracks. Spent many a nite at Cafe Schmidt, Mario's,
and the Beer Fests. I was buddies with Roy Parker, Quigley,
Ward, Adair, Manny, Van Burton, Smitty, and so many others. Does
anyone remember when Epstein dove in the Dykes and broke his
neck? He had to wear a bodycast from the waist up for a long
time. I was in the tent Commo pitched on New Years Eve 1975
outside Headquarters. We all got smashed, passed out, and
someone stole the tent from over us. What a great time! If
anyone has the HHT Company picture from 1975, I sure would

there from 88-91 you should know Gary Thurston, my husband
was in the same troops as you and we used to hang out a lot
in the Cobra Bar & Grill (with Jimmy, Costa & Mama), The
Green Goose and off course the Shamrock. Wow good ol times,
Hell the favorite game was Bumba Mass lol... Ia m originally
from Nuernberg and now we are located in Montana, USA. If
you remember either of us, write back... |

Hello,
Was there from March of 80 to Sept of 81.
I used to coach softball down at the housing complex.
I was a mechanic with HHB 3/17. Our CO was Captain Moore and the
1st was I do not remember but I think it started with a G. Ran
into him working on the IG team at Foot Hood. Hung aroud with a
guy name David Miller. Commo Sergeant was SSG Posie. And the
names of Hal, Timothy and Bruce seem to righ a bell.
Oh and attend a Baptist Church. We started on Furth and then
moved to the economy. The pastors name was Luther ??
I do remeber we had a piolt in our church who led the music. And
we had a civilian who had three daughters who could really sing.
And more comes back the more I write--The church also had
Colonel Billingisly and Wiseman--who had two good looking
daughters. One who I ran into many years later dating a fried of
mine from high school. My friend called me on the phone and said
he had a surprise for me. Its a small world.
And on the soft ball team was a girl named Rita Dodge--seems she
has sister named Angela--no Angela was our catcher.
Ran into Rita and her family years later at Fort Hood.
And there was Courtney and Larissa Lewis--I think their father
was Colone Lewis of the ACR--never came to a game--
We also had a good mess sergeant. I can remember if we got back
late from a mission and missed chow he would whip some up. Did
not matter what time of the night.
David Miller:
Was David Miller from Hawaii??? At David. Do you remeber
trying to fix a head gasket on your car. Do you remeber
painting the church???
