Hey Dennis: I received your email, but was on a trip overseas and now can't find it. I was S1 clerk at Bat HQ 2/37th Armor June 66 to June 68. I remember Malinoski, Walther and Bunn (who came later), Lt. Pantalion, Sgt.Green and a few others, from the different companies. We had a great bunch of guys. I am going back to Furth for a visit next October (08) and will pass by to see if anything is left of the place.

Hi,
I was in the 2/14 Arty from OCT 63 thru JUN 65 when I went to Karlsruhe. Forward Observer and motor officer for a while and then XO at A Btry with CPT Bill Bakkeby and MSG Chepeus. Lived at the BOQ and played a lot of foosball with Bob Allen and Ed Donati. Ed is the one who led us on a wrong turn on the Autobahn on the way to Graff and the convoy ended up doing a U-Turn on the autobahn. I kept in contact with Bobby Moore and Hans Dallhausen for a while but lost contact some time ago. Still in contact with Ed donati in San Jose.
I visited Monteith in NOV 2007 and my photos are under "Marth1941" photos.
Thanks for the great site.
Marth

Bob Stewart:
Russ,

Please forgive the lack of memory on my part but I was also assigned to the 501st Finance Co. / 1st Armoed Division Finance Co. during that same period and after Cpt McCoy rotated out....I very well remember Cpt McCoy (I went to BAMA and he was a Notre Dame guy; we constantly argued about who had the best football team & coach)...Cpt McCoy, Col Vazquez, Lt. David Tucker, SFC Larry Duke, SSG Bill Logsdon, Spc 4 Mark Rigdon, Spec 4 Richard Trapp, PFC Stephen North, PFC Ron Wilkes...I can name many of the guys that I spent time with...the exchange rate was 4:1, beer was excellent, schnitzel was hard to beat and Charlies was always good for a crowd...I also remember a great place in downtown Nurnberg called Alpino's (Italian / German).. have had a corporate career with Nissan North America, Inc., since those days...I still maintain a friendship with (2) of the guys that I mentioned above and see them about once a year..I stumbled onto this site while doing other research about Germany for a friend...your comment above is very true...the field guys were always fearful of the Finance guys...did not want their pay being forwarded to the abyss...one of the guys that I played a lot of golf with (at the Montieth Golf Course) was Ron Wilkes...excellent golfer from Jackson, MS...anyway, excellent to hear from someone else that had the opportunity to eat one fo the Pizza's from the little joint just outside the front gate at Montieth...

TOMMY HARRIS AKA: ZONKER:
I TOO WAS STATIONED AT 1ST AD FINANCE UNDER CAPT MCCOY...HE WAS A GREAT OIC...BIG NOTRE DAME FAN....LOST A BET WHEN NOTRE DAME SPANKED ALABAMA IN SOME BOWL IN EITHER 71 OR 72...HE USED TO ALWAYS GIVE US PARTIAL PAYS WHEN WE WOULD GET SHORT....HAD A COUPLE OF ROOMMATES WHILE I WAS THERE...STEVE TRYKAR FROM DOWNEY CALIF AND MILES SHIROMA(SP?) FROM HAWAII....HAD SOME GREAT TIMES...DRANK LOTS OF TUCHER BEER AND SMOKED A LOT OF HASH....AMONG OTHER ILLEGAL THINGS (WHICH I WON'T GO INTO..DON'T WANT TO INCRIMINATE ANYONE....ALSO PLAYED GUITAR WITH SOME GUYS...GENE THOMSON(PEORIA ILLINOIS), JIM FARMER(INDIANA) RICH ALANIZ(MICHIGAN) MIKE VANCE(KENTUCKY) KERRY KNOCKLE(NOT SURE WHERE FROM...BUT COULD SING!!)....LATER STATIONED AT 501ST S & T HHC AS COMPANY KEYPUNCHER....NEVER WENT TO THE FIELD....LITERALLY HAD IT MADE....PARTIED WAY TOO MUCH....ANYONE REMEMBER, PLEASE EMAIL ME: TOMMY.HARRIS1@ATT.NET

For all who used to go to the EM/NCO/OFFICERS Clubs:

My two bands ("Six Pack" and "Gordy Thomas and CREW") used to play all around Southern Bavaria.

I've written a lot of songs since then, and anyone is welcome to download the free .mp3 files listed on my site at gordythomas.com please disregard the fact that there are also song files for sale on the page, as it is not my intent to get you to buy anything. I just thought some of the FOB (Friends of The Bands) might be interested in hearing what I've been doing in Nashville.

And to all combat veterans, "Welcome Home!"

I was stationed at Monteith from 1972 through 1974 in the 501st S&T. I remember the little pizza place at the main gate. Great Pizza (at least I thought so when I was there, but then again, all we had was the mess hall ...

I had a good frend named Steven Passner. I wish I could find him. He lived at the time in New Jersey. He always shared his Pizzza with me cause I was always broke, and he loved at that German memorabilla (sp).

Years later I made a friend, and later found out he was a coper pilot, then later to find out he served in Germany, than later to find out, he was stationed at Monteith Barracks... He was my roomate her in Littleton for three years... His name is Jessie Fuentas..

Later,

Marty SP4, now a Peace Corps Volunteer Applicant going to Belize in June 08'....

Ernie, I have a pic of the FU--123 license plate from when I was there from 68-70. Back then we were the 126th in the 4th AD.I looked for the same plate with 126 on it but never found one. I heard that every time the person that had that plate put a new one on his car that it got stolen. Go figure.

Tom:
Alan, Searching for a FU-126 plate was also one of our favorite past times. I compromised with the one I found, posted it on the Furth photo gallery.

Chuck:
Was with 126 and 123 Maint 70-72. Got out of the army here, married a German Lady.
My sister-outlaw, worked at the German vehicle registration. I had FU-** 123 as a plate for my TR-6, and FU-** 444 for my VW Camper.
Also had a set stolen once.

I was stationed at monteith from 1954 thru 1956. I was attachwed to HQ Company with the Security Police. I've tried to look up some of my army friends but have not any luck. I have alot of fond memories of this area.

Ed Leighton:
I am looking for information about a Sgt Jack A. Blank. I know that he was stationed in the area in 1955, and had a daughter while he was there. If anyone has information about him his grandchildren would like to know.I married his daughter and she passed away in 1986. Thanks for your help. straitfireman@yahoo.com

I was stationed with HHC Discom then 123rd Main.Bn from 1972 through 1975. In the motor pool but mostly as a Company driver. I drove the "Magic Bus" to the PX and Hospital but sometimes we went on some "private Excursions" with a few of my friends. Any body Remember?

Great Site! Lots of memories come flying back. I was a machinist in Co. B 123rd Maint. Bn. S&R platoon from 12/80 to 12/82. What a riot! I remember guarding the damn front and back gate as an SP. I also remember getting dragged down to the "Wall" for my Platoon Initiation. God Bless the Cold War!

Dve Saraga.:
I got to B Co. 123rd around April of '82. Assigned to the Mech Maint. platoon. For about 2 months we had to work 18 hour days including some weekends. I remember 1st Stg Randolph, what a scum bag. The most repressive unit there ever was. Had to work long hours, fixing trucks, because of a backlog from the Jimmy Carter administration. I also worked the front gate as an SP.

I was stationed at Monteith Barracks from 1984-1989. I started off in HSC, 47th Med Bn, F Co, 123rd Spt Bn, and ended in HHD 123rd Spt Bn. There are so many people that I would like to hear from including a couple of people from 69th Chem. If anyone remembers Paula Bell she is now SGM Chavez.

A. loyola-69th motor pool:
hey i was in the 69th from oct.86 to july 88 who did you know from the 69th

Hines:
Did you know Thomas Holmes, Palmer, Singleton, SSG Moore, Mayberry, Bonita Brown all from 69th Criminals, sorry Chemical(LOL)

a. loyola:
i knew ssg moore and palmer the rest are a little fuzzy and we were pretty criminalistic lol ( you had to know boggy .).

Hines:
No, I don't remember boggy. SSG Moore is retired and lives in Newport News, VA. I have not seen Palmer since Germany. Do you remember Horton?

morel:
Palmer was my SQD LDR in 69th, i bumped into him and Singleton in Saudi. i think he got out right after DStorm.

Hines:
what about singleton?

John and Debbie Maxwell. Ken Finney. Scott Ross. Raymond Caldwell. Blake. SSG Lester. CW4 Lackey.
How do I remember these names? No Idea!

just found this place...my hubby was in B comp 501st S&T from70-76...everybody called him andy..if you remember him give us a shout

Larry Rogers:
Hey Andy, this is Larry Rogers, was with Bco 501 S&T from 72-75 we were Truckers.

Joe Earnest:
Well, I'm having trouble making connections between the names and the faces, but if I saw a picture, I'll bet I'd make the connection in that I see on the company roster from November 71 that you were Cotterman's driver. I was the company clerk from March 70 to January 72 (the one with the controversial tatoo) and I took a copy of the roster with me. Have it here in front of me.

Tom:
Andy...not sure if you are the andy anderson I remember...I was in 501st S & T HHC from 72-74...I was a keypuncher...seems like you used to die-dye a lot...seems like we partied together a few nights...I used to play guitar...hope all is well...

I was so happy to see this site !! As another poster said, I used to google Monteith every once in a while to see if there was anything on the Web. Spent 1975 ~ 1979 in Fuerth : Charlie Co 47th Med, and then Head and A, 47th.
So many good days...the bad memories seemed to have faded away and the good remain.
Drop a line if you knew me..
Thanks to the webmaster for putting this together !!

Jim Keating:
Bill,
I do not know if you remember me. I was a mechanic for Charlie Company. I remember the wild parties. ,we used to have.

I was station at Monteith Barracks between Jan. 1977 to May 1979. My unit was B Co. 123rd Maint. Battalion. I had a wild time and would like to hear from my fellow soldiers. I'll be submitting pics from that period. I was actually down in the tunnels just before I went back to 'The World.' I carved my nickname and 1979 date next to another name that was carved back in the late 1940's. I hate to see it so overgrown. Monteith Barracks was originally a Nazi airfield that NATO never knew was there until the US Army over took the area. The Post Maint. office was the ground floor of the building that housed the Nazi officer club several floors underground. A wood barricade covered the stairs and was not opened after WWII due to the concern of old booby traps. I will be going back soon to see if the stomping grounds in Nurnberg are still there. Anyone see the Bob Dylan/Eric Clapton concert in Nurnberg??? I was watching the concert where Hitler would stand when he was viewing the Parade field.

SP/4 Young:
Well if you were on Monteith during that time, and in the 123rd, I was your cook (one of them anyway!) Specialist Elizabeth Young....remember any of us cooks?

Hello all,
I went to Monteith Barracks yesterday the 4th of August, 2007 and it has changed a bit since I was last there back in 1989. It is a mosquito infested area that is overgrown with vegetation. The street that goes to the right once you go through the gate is being rebuilt? The first building which I think is the power plant is still there and looks like it is in good condition. The next building where my old unit (Cco 501st Forward Support Battalion) was located is overgrown with vegetation and no longer has the roof over the front door. Inside most of the walls and ceilings have the paint peeling and a few of the windows are broken. The mess hall next door is gutted out with trash everywhere. The old PX/barber shop is a bit trashed and some rooms are graffitied with cigarette butts and bottles laying around. A lot of the rooms have egg cartons hanging off them. I am guessing these were used for acoustic rooms. I can't remember. The PT field is overgrown and the basketball court is still there but it only had one hoop still usable. The airfield buildings were being used by an electric car club that day and I also saw some people playing with their gas powered remote controlled cars. At the end of the road there is a day care that looks like it is still in use with toys laying around. I might go back but maybe in the fall when there aren't so many mosquitos.

Was with B Co. 126 Ord Bn / E Co. 126 Mt Bn from '60 -'64 working as a Tank Turret/Artillery Armament Repairman. If you guys want to see how much Monteith has changed, go to google earth and type in "vacher strasse 261 Furth, Germany" (Old Monteith Bks. address) for a birds eye view. The post is now a golf club.

jorge morel:
when i was there 87-89 the Us military was using the golf course, it was one of the best in europe. we would go there of Graf or Hohenfels and 1sg would usually get the 1st rack of beer.

Tom Stalgaitis:
Don,
Thanks for the tip, I forgot about Google Earth. I remember my 1st Christmas Eve there in '68, took a left out of the gate and walked until we found a Gasthaus, one of my best Christmas Eve's ever.

Dan Gossett:
Hello Tom & Don
Left out of the gate must have led you to Vach. A retired army sergeant and his wife ran the guest house. Best place ever for a weiner snitzel & beer. Dan

It looks like we shared the same barracks. I was at Monteith Barracks in Nov 1976- Jan 1979. I was assigned to A co.501st S&T BTN. We had the barracks closest to the main gate on the left side. There was a few steps and a little sidewalk to our frontdoor. Our messhall was behind us.

imet a girl who was training at the hospital near the trolly turnaround and married her , we jost had our 30 yr, anniversary. the pizza joint near the hole in the fence was great, we got into the tunnels thru a small concrete structure that looked like a bread oven. it was between a couple barracks in the 2/37 area. any body remember rolling the ol' mans jeep on a beer run at graf', good times. love to hear from any body who may have been at E-126 during '64-'65

JIM ROBINSON CULLMAN ALA:
Hey Jon
I was at Monteith at the same time.I remember the pizza place very well.I remember coming in bombed one night and we got a pizza. I took a bite of the thing while it was hot and it burned a blister on the top of my mouth. Its funny how little things stick out in your mind. I used to bring my girl friend in through the hole in the fence so i remember it very well. The hole in the fence was behind my barracks. Those were some fun times.Did you ever go to the krystal palace had some great times there.

jon anderson:

I was Education Counselor at the Monteith Army Education Center from 1985 until I "turned out the lights" in October 1991, and moved the remaining DA Form 669, Education Records, to Darby. At Monteith we had an USAREUR award-winning DANTES testing program, well-attended college programs, and were the site of Nuernberg's graduate programs!

Plese let me know how you have progressed in your careers. After stints with the U.S. Geological Survey and the (now defunct) Immigration and Naturalization Service, I am back a second time with the Defense Dept.

This is a sad day. I didn't know that Monteith was gone. This was my first duty station, at Co D (Go DAWGS) 47th Med '82-83. I loved that place. When I got orders to go stateside, to Walter Reed of all places, I didn't want to go. But my CO told me I was a fool to pass up on those orders. Needless to say, he was wrong. Nothing compared to Monteith. I remember when that pizza place opened. It was heaven compared to the delivery guy who came around after midnight. But digress. I have many photos that I will have to dig up and send to the webmaster to include in the website.

tess:
spent alot of time in the DAWGS barracks. you know steward and hosea?

I was Stationed at Monteith Barracks with the 47th Medical Div. A COmpany from 77 through 80. Wondering if anyone has seen or heard from "Mad-dog" Munoz, Mike "Mudflap" Dunlap, MS. Scarfia, Ed Morgan, Joe Conrad, John Fogarty, Hugh Barker, Etc. I have been reading over the messages that have been posted and realized the blast that we had when we were staioned there even though all we wanted was to get back to the world...I remember a place that had the best Pizza I ever ate over there also but it was outside of the gates at Landstuhl called Dali's. Can't remember the name of the pizza place outside the gates of Monteith other than i think we called it "The Ranch". I recall John Denvers Take Me home country Road Song being quite popular in there.

Frank Walker:
OMG! You brought back memories. Mike Dunlap gave me his Karman Ghia when he left for the states. He was my platoon sgt. We were both Washington State boys so he was the first to get me high & drunk.

Bill Donovan:
I was there, first with Charlie CO, and then Head and A. I have talked with a few guys from those days (through military.com and classmates)I emailed with Hugh Barker, he and Fogarty went to work for the railroad, since retired I believe. "The Ranch" was the bar "next" to the pizza place, damned if I knew if the pizza place even had a name.LOL
Good days......glad I found this site.. :-)

Hi, am looking for my brother's dad. He was stationed in Merrell Barracks or somewhere in Furth around 1956 / 1957. He might already be dead by now, but just looking for photographs or anything that we can find. His name is Kenneth Goss, born 15th June 1934, from Pennsylvania. Would be glad to get any hint on him or photos. My brother (Daniel) recently turned 50 and is still looking for his father.
Thanks Petra

I was stationed at Montieth Barracks from 1/76 to 4/78 as part of the 123 HQ Mt Bn as the Mail clerk(best job I've ever had) Have contacted Russ Cyr, but would like to hear from anyone from the 123 Mt Bn during that era. Loved Germany while I was there.

Richard Wallace:
I was there from about 2/76 to 10/76. I knew Jim Brown, Jim Dunn, Ken Finney, Al "snake" Hudgens, Caldwell, SSG Foster, Cyr, and more. It was the most fun I had in the Army. I was in the Signal Platoon. SSG Lester was in charge I believe. Graf and Hoenfeld was an experiance.

I was stationed @ Monteith 79-82 with 1stAD & HQ & HQS Co...Cpt Moody was our C.O. had a great time...last time I visited the place..empty place..the golf course still being maintained by the germans..the warehouse in the end of the post is where all those (east) germans are temporarily living. All the barracks reminds me of Ghost town...weeds are out growing the barracks and the buildings.

My Father, Bert Craig, was stationed at Monteith Barracks from 8/53 to 8/54. Some time ago he asked me to try to track down a Captain R.A. Butler. Does anyone know where he is, how he can be reached, any current news?

Maybe some of you remember my Father. He was a big golfer? Please let me know if you do. I can be reached at mi.craig@yahoo.com.

Michael

I was at Monteith Barracks around 82-83. I was a 55B. I remember so many guys there... Dirk Van Arman, Adkins, Kevin Mattoon, Rocky Pfeiffer, Theresa Bettis...anyway, so many beers at the 'Ranch" and at that little bar downtown. Great times.

David Saraga:
I was assigned to B Co.123rd, the most reprssive unit on post, from 4/82 - 3/84. The Ranch, was that the name of bar that was just outside the front gate? Did you hang out at the Golden Anker, that cool rock n' roll bar? I posted tons of photos on Classmates.com. Look under military assignments and go to Fuerth. You might see people you know. Check it out.

Duane Kellems:
Funny story .... DO you remember rappelling out of the barracks windows?
I ran into Dirk van Arman, about 10 years ago while ice fishing .it was wierd , middle of this lake and this guy walks up with his dog ,and he is wearing a camo. jacket ,I look at the unit patch ,and name ,and I will be damned if it was not Dirk

tess jones:
i remember dirk. that is funny that he would just walk up where you were fishing. too crazy - but then again....

I was stationed at Monteith in 1964 -65 in HQ Company Radar Ground Surveillance platoon. Too much Tank maintenance.

It was great to see this site and read all the comments. Jim Spence called me a few years ago after 30+ years and I remember him and his accident. I put him in touch with a few other guys from Monteith. I am still in touch with 2 other guys from my platoon.

I visited Monteith in 1995 and while it was closed and run down it was great to return to so many memories. Had to argue with the German guard to get in but I managed.

Anyone remember Gasthaus Zum Schnepper or Shakeys right outside the post. Last stop before returning to base.

I was much surprised to find this website on my PC. I was stationed at Monteith from Feb. 53 to March 54. After I returned from Korea in Sept. 52 I had the opportunity to go to Germany where I served at Monteith in the regimental Intelligence & Reconnaisance platoon of the 169th Inf. Regt., 43rd Inf. Division. It looked a lot different then than it looks in the pictures I see on the website. All our buildings were painted in camouflage colors. I recall that there had been an small airfield there during the war. We had great times espcially inviting orphan children to share Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners with us. The well-known watering holes were the Metropole in Furth and the Flying Dutchman in Nurnberg.

My unit was HQ Co. 2nd 37th Armor Div, Monteith Barracks. Was stationed there for 18 months, middle of 1967 to March of 1968. I was in the 4 point Deuce mortars which were in 113 personnel carriers.

Cool web site brings, back good thoughts now, of fun times at Graff., Hornsfelt, guard duty, KP, The WAll in Nurenburg, Krystal Palace, Snippers, Berchtesgaden, Garmisch and Amsterdam.

I can see the faces of the guys but I can't remember all of their names. Some of the names: Top Kick Kula, Platoon SFC Wayne Wiley. He went to O.C.S., Gaylord Bailey, Mike Bazelides, John Durris, Jimmy Carver, Brumsfield, John Funk, Grayson, Bost, Yamashita, clerk's: Kato, John Stornetta.

john batson:
were you Sgt. Wileys driver, Ray? In my four years in the army, he was one of the very best ncos I ever encountered. I hope he made it through the RVN, which I assume, as a 2nd LT, he had to be and do. Joe Austin, 4.2 armorer, and I shipped to RVN at the same time-early 68.I arrived in Deutschland in fall of 66, along with Bazelides, Detroit John Durris, and a whole bunch who were trained as Signal Corp pole-linemen at Fort Gordon, Ga.- all to become some form of infantry.(Army typical, eh?) I drove #1 track(4.2), then took it easy as a track driver for Bn.Hq. I surely do wish I could remember all the names of all the very good people I armied with in the 2/37. Do you remember a Captain Pantalion, a real hardnose line captain. I said hello to him later in the px at Ci Chi, RVN. I used my excellent training that Sgt. Wiley gave us in Vietnam, as I was a 4deucer in the 1/5th Mech, 25th Division...from a Wyvern(2/37) to a bobcat(1/5.) I will revisit this sight hoping to read of others of our kammeraden.

We lived in the Nurnberg/Furth area in the 60s and 70s...my Dad was also stationed there in the 50s/60s/70s...SFC Waymon (Wayne) Peacock...the last unit he was in was 16th Engrs at Johnson Barracks. I played sports (aya and High School) in the 70s. I believ my Dad was stioned at Monteith during one of his tours. Looking for old friends or anyone that knew my ol' man. Back living in Germany as a retiree (Landstuhl) after 25 years in the Army! God, I love this place...and how lucky we were to have lived in Nberg during the 60s/70s/and 80s.
Take care, MSG (ret) Mike Peacock

76-78, B Co 501st S&T. Company Commander was the late Phil McManus. Platoon leaders in B Co were Charlie Herbek, Bill Spies, Bill "Bama" Cook and Tony Pirocco. We all drove VW Beetles. Wildest memory is of one of the troops stealing one of the float tanks out of the 123d Maintenance and chasing COL Hull (DISCOM Cdr) around the caserne.

Hello All,
I was at Monteith Barracks from 1985 to 1989, in F Co, 123 SB. It was a good time in my life. I was young and enjoying everything life had to offer. I met some really nice people and made several friends that i have since, lost contact with. I hope this site will allow me to re-conect to them. I've already notice a few that have visited the site; Lori Williams and Danny McDonald to name a few. Thanks for all your work.

I'm so very happy and thankful for your site. When I saw the front gate to Montieth, I cried. It brought back so many great memories. I was there from 1982-1984 Hi fellas! I loved you all and love you still. I was in A Co. 501st. S&T battallion and used to work for C.I.F. on the issue line. later I drove a duece and a half to deliver supplies to you all out in the field. I met airmen, tankers, mechanics, medical personnel, and so on. I met you all on warm days & cold days out in the field delivering supplies as well as c-rations. Montieth is one of the best memories of my life and always will be. I'm in the corporate world now and things have certainly changed but my memories of you all will live with me always no matter where my life may take me. Does anyone remember Richard Herman? He was in transport and used to drive a big tow truck and I believe he was a mechanic as well. He was from Houston, Tx. Please e-mail me if you get a chance. Would love to talk about the good old days with you

I was transferred to Headquarters Company where I drove a jeep for Batt. S2 (Capt Smith) for about three months, then back to Abel Co.

I still have the enameled sign (A Co. 169 Inf.) that was on the barracks when it was re-designated (I stole it)

I say thank you the soldiers for this time and the good doings for the German Childrens.I think still often Back.

I was stationed at Monteith Barracks from 1977-1979. Served as a cook at the 123rd Dining Facility during the years that we won the Best Small Dining Facility in the Army. I loved Germany so much and hope to come back someday. It was such a surprise to find that the base is gone. It really was such a nice base....small and not so much hubbub like the bigger bases....but still a lot of fun to be had there. Do you remember all the feral cats that lived there and that would come out at night? And does anyone remember that incredible pizza place right outside the gate where it would always be so crowded (especially on Friday and Saturday nights) that you'd have to sqeeze in to place your order and then wait outside if there was no room inside? Gotta feel sorry for the owners of that shop when Monteith closed down. They were doing a booming business there. I miss all of my friends that I made. Kept in touch with some for awhile and then they would move and I never found them again.

I was assigned to D company of the 47th medical bn but worked and lived in the dispensary. I was at Monteith Barracks from '71 to '73. Used to go to a 'gasthaus' for food and beer that was north of the base and run by a man and his elderly mother. Man's name was Fritz. Anyone remember him and the place?

Joe Pearsall OKC:
I arrived at C Company 47th Med in September 1972 and stayed at Monteith until August 1974. Was D Company the ambulance company for the 47th? When I arrived my CO was Lt Oberlander and then later Major Caskey. Does any of this sound familiar? I'm sure we saw each other almost daily for a year or so.

john goldston:
Joe, I am sure we crossed paths at some point given that the company area was not all that big. Yes, I think D company was the ambulance company. I think I remember Oberlander. How about Lt Col. Buell and Capt. Kaminar, remember those names?

Joe Pearsall:
I believe Lt Col Buell sounds familiar; was he the Bn Commander?

Tommy:
I was stationed at Monteith from 71-74...first with 1st AD Finance, then with 501st S & T HHC...I do remember Fritz's place...he used to bake bread every Tuesday & Thursday...you could smell it a mile before you got there....good beer too!!!!spent many Friday afternoon's there playing cards and drinking beer....I used to play guitar a lot....we also used to go to a guest house on the way to fuerth...it was on the main drag from the base on the left just before you got to the trolley turnaround....we simply called Pop's Place.;.

WOW! I didn't realize Monteith was gone. What a shame, I was stationed there From oct. 83 to Mar 85 At the 141st signal Support Platoon, there were only a couple dozen of us,but we were a close knit unit and that place has alot of special memories.

Robert G. Gooch:
Robert--I was at the 144 sig suppt from 06/67 thru 10/68 Is this the same place--Right at front gate at the turn in the street

Steve Harris:

Great website! It brings back many fond memories to see the photos and to read about all who have walked the ground at Monteith. I was stationed there from Mar 71 to Mar 74, with the 504th/501st S&T Bn. I served as a young lieutenant in A Co., as the motor officer and Class I platoon leader and then moved up to the BN HQ as the S1/Adjutant. When I first got there LTC Norman Oaks was the battalion commander and was replaced by a gem of a guy, LTC "Matt" Dillon. I would love to hear from any of the old S&T soldiers, especially those who I worked with and have probably forgotten until discovering this website.

SGM J.E. PLATT RET.:
I WAS WITH THE 501ST FROM 73-76 THEN WENT TO HQ DISCOM FROM 76-78. AT THE 501 I WAS THE NCOIC OF THE AUTOMATED PROPERTY BOOK SECTIION UNDER CPT SEAY, THEN WENT TO B CO. AS THE FIRST SERGEANT UNDER CPT AMRSTRONG.THE CSM WAS CSM GAY OR DAY??

ralph harrell:
I was in A Co 501st S&T Bn from 1973,74 and 75. I was in class 1 section and was constantly in the field.I was an E5 at the time.I had plt sgt's named sfc cacino and wright. I don't remember you but it was good talking to you .

Joe Earnest:
Hi Mike, I was the company clerk for Company B in 71 and I still have internmittant contact with Bob Kryzkowski, who was the company clerk at Company A in 71. I'm going to send him a link to this site as soon as I get through looking around.

I was with the 529th Ord. Co. from Dec. 1987 until the unit moved to Ferris Barracks in Erlangen in mid 1989. I just visited, 27 Sept. 06. It has been left to the elements. A bit sad to see. The hangers have been used by German businesses and there is a bit of construction here and there, but all the barracks are empty. One of the hangers out at the back gate is being used as a horse arena.

Many great memories! The thick morning fog (but not the PT in it!), the pizza joint outside of the gate, the tunnels under the post, travels around the city, and the Greek resturant down where the Strassenbahn turned around in Fürth. Love to hear from anyone stationed there during that time or with the 529th.

The latest posting brought up something I forgot about, the many tunnels that were sealed off under Monteith Barracks. Does anyone have any more information on them? We tried to enter one from an elevetor shaft in the warehouse, didn't get too far.

Robert Downs:
The only tunnel I was able to get into was the tunnel at the top of the hill just off the back gate. As I remember it, the structure was about waist high, and someone had bashed a hole in the seal. The tunnel entrance looked like a manhole without the cover with a rebar type ladder extending downward. The tunnel depth -- as I remember it was about 30 or 40 feet. I just recall it being very deep and very, very dark. The tunnel itself was narrow and hewn out of bedrock, no improvements that I remember. At the bottom of the shaft I could go in two directions, both of which eventually ended up meeting further seals. We were worried about getting caught, so we didn't spend a whole lot of time down there. I was awfully brave back then...

I was stationed at Monteith Barracks from 1982 through 1984. I was assigned to the 501st S & T Battalion. Our First Sergeant was 1SG Arizumi whom we affectionately referred to as "Stump the Chump". My clearest fuzzy memories of that period was the "Ranch" bar and the pizzaria trailer across the road from the front gate. The owner of that pizzaria had a young son (at the time) who now owns an Italian restaurant near the former NEX Complex in Naples, Italy. Our paths crossed a couple of years ago and it was a nice reunion of sorts. I enjoyed Monteith Barracks and explored at least one of the tunnels through a somewhat inadequately sealed entry near the back gate. Polish Sausage & Galaga at the bowling alley -- and most of all, driving my fuel tanker all over the region dropping fuel. Refueling tankers at... can't remember the name now. At any rate, it was a great tour for a young kid.

I was in HQ Battery 2 Btn/14th Arty from late 1965 to early 1967 in FDC. The picture of the front gate sure brought back memories, like catching a taxi at the bahnhof late at night to get back to Monteith Barracks. Also the picture of Charlie's was a memory mover. Drank a lot of beer in there and had some good schnitzel. Also remember a place called Pop Sorrel's. He was a retired Sgt that married a local "rad". They were rebuildingthe trolley turn-around when I got there in '65 and they were still working on it in '67 when I left. "So many cobble stones and so many biere breaks"

JIM ROBINSON CULLMAN ALA:
Hey roger i was in HQ Battery at the same time. Looking for any assigned to the Mental Hygiene Consultation Svc., 4th AD, circa 1967-1970. The "shrink unit" had the upstairs of the dispensary. Psychiatrists were CA Smith and Geoff Tucher. WOW, what a blast from the past! I was stationed there from 1981-'84 in HHS, 47th Med-had a great time there,it was pretty "laid back" compared to the rest of my 20 yr. career(82nd ABN, S.F.,recruiting and 2 "hardcore" INF Bns.I drank lots of good beer-I loved to go to Bamberg and drink their world famous "smoked" beer.I can still remember all the great concerts at that time-I saw Styx,Rush,Dire Straits, Bruce Springsteen,AC/DC,The Stones at the Olympiastadion in Munich and the "final" Supertramp concert all within about a year. Spent a lot of time at Graf but travelled around whenever I could including a week of sailing at Lake Chiemsee and a couple of trips to ski in Garmish-I also went on several "Volksmarches". In the winter is was fun just to hang around in the barracks with friends, drink beer and listen to music. Seeing the photo on the home page brought back a lot of memories i'll tell you. I worked as an SP at the front gate for a time-what a cool Job!This was one of the best times of my life!! I'd like to give a shout out to Gary Robinson, Ed Bergmann, John Rondeau,OPIE and anyone else that I may have forgotten.

Gary:
what a great time on the second floor..I loved all my ladies...

To Mel Glover: Im tying to remember you. What section did you work in? I workes upstairs and the warehose was below. We called it the pit.Remember,SSG Shulka ran the warehouse? Sorry for not posting for awhile, as my mother passed away last month and have been busy.Mel,where did you go when you left germany and the 126th maint bn? I do remember when they started to revamp the warehouse to go to an automated system.

Art Paulus:
Paul, My name is Art Paulus. I was with Hq 126th Mt Bn during late 66 to about Apr 68 before I got levied to RVN. I worked upstairs in the BN S2 office and was the Col Driver (LTC Edmund G. Boy)for a while. In your comment above, it seems to me that I remember the warehouse below being renovated. Do you remember all of the State Flags? Was this about the same time you where there????

Great site! Thank you for putting it together. I was at Monteith with Co A, 2nd Bn, 37th Armor from 1964 - 1967. Also did some TDY with the Installation Coordinator's Office and the UP's (unit police). Those there at the time will probably remember Shakey's Pizza, Gasoline Annie, the Krystal Palace and old "Pop" who sold snacks and popcorn at the post theatre (when we GI's would get a little rowdy Pop would shake his head and proclaim, "Minch ist kinder"!) Those were good days. It's hard to believe it's been 4o years. Dino, Rosco, SFC Schul, Henry, Delmas, Eberhart, SGT Burns, Rushton, and all the rest - I hope you guys are still kickin'.

John Batson:
Pop was an institution, no doubt. My great memories of Montieth Barracks were made at the 2/37 also, fall 66 to early 68, first in the 4.2 plt, then as a track driver in Bn. Hq. Montieth Barracks lives vividly in the memorys of its children, nicht wahr.

Spc. 5 Johnnie P. Raney:
Hey Ben , I don't remember you right off hand . I don't see you in the company pic of 1964 . You may have been T D Y somewhere. Sgt. Burns was my tank commander for a short time . He took the crew to his off post houseing for dinner one night . Met his wife and daughter . Do you rember Colman . He was always gone T D Y to play basket ball . Boyd was the other crew member when I got there . Never realy had a full crew . I think Mosley worked in the mess hall or maint . I don't remember . But he drove the tank often . I was a gunner in 1965 . TOP GUN on the T C P C coures . I have a clipping from the stars and stripes lol .
well you take care Ben

I was never stationed at Monteith Barracks, but I spent more time there than I did at Ferris Barracks. I was there from 1984-87. I spent many nights at that bar across the street from the post along with the pizza joint, which I was at last summer and it's closing down next year.

It would be great to hear from some old friends.

Bill Knight:
I do remember 1Lt McCain. He was fairly short and I'm 6'6". One day he locked my heels and proceeded to chew me out. Standing at attention, I looked right over his head and he was yelling into my shirt. After a while he must have felt silly/embarrassed and walked away in disgust. Wasn't SFC Bixler a re-tread [got out of the service and then returned]? I do not remember Muller or Bell. How about Capt Bodereau and SFC Moore - they ran Company A? Bill Kenney - company clerk?

Mel Glover:
I recall SFC Bixler, Msg Davis. First SGT was Johnny Cook when I left October 1970.Red head Shulka(sp) who told it like it was to anybody. Johnny Cook made E9 last known retired in San Antonio. Others Unknown. Also Worked with You Paul when the Civilians came in and revamped the Whse. Prior to you leaving.

i was station at monteith barracks from 1967 to 1970, with hhc 126th maint bn. i worked in the supply at the warehouse near the railroad tracks,i will give some last names to see if anyone remembers. maj cook, maj pitt, lt shoop, ssg shulka. ltc dolfi, cpt pagano.

Bill Knight:
Paul, I was there in 1968 and part of 1969. I worked for Major Cook in the Materiel Office along with SFC Somerville. I also remember Major Pitt - he was the XO and married to a German movie star. Lt Shoop [can't remember his first name] was the quarterback for our two hand touch team that lost in the finals in 1968. I do not remember the others named. I think I remember you. Were you a SP5 at that time working with MST Rudder?

Art:
Damn !! we worked in the same office together at the same time. I'm sorry but I can't put a face to the name. When I got to Germany (had to be late 66) the 126th Mt Bn was still in Schwabisch Hall. The unit moved to Montieth in early 67. I came into Hq as a typist in the Materiel office. It seems that I remember one of the biggest problems was trying to fine M-151 Powerpacks??? (Jeep engines?) I remember Maj Pitt, he had a red corvette smoked a pipe. How about a guy named Oberman, and a short Lt from Hawaii

I was an M-48 Gunner, with “C” Co.,2nd MTB, 67th Armor, 4th Armored Division stationed at Monteith from 57-60. I was honored to have served with the men of that unit, and to know, It was because of their presence that the “Cold War”, stayed just that!

Hello to all,
I was stationed at Monteith Barracks from 1971-1973. I was a Communication Specialist located in the HeadQuarters 501st S&T Battalion building. This was the building attached to the mess hall at that time. I lived off post just down the street from the Hertzoganarch base.

Gary Clark:
I thought after 3 years of watching this site that I would add some more. 1971-1973. HHC 501st. Commo shop was in the basement next to the supply and arms room. Best friend was the HHC Company Clerk, Ron Kalous from Lohrville Iowa. John Murphy from Eustice, Florida was ration driver, Ricky Ohlhauser was supply specialist. Larry Blankenship was also in communications. I was there when 2 cooks (Chapple and Perry) killed the taxi driver and Monteith was closed down over a Country Wide taxi cab protest against GI's. At that time there were large steel doors out in the parade field. A couple times a year the fire department would come over and fill the pit back up with water to make sure no one would mess with the left behind Germany equipment. If we wern't drinking beer or Jim Beam we were salvaging VW parts from the little junk yard behind the mess hall.

I was a M48 Tank Gunner with 2/67th Armor / 4th AD during 1957-1960. We Gyroscoped from Ft. Hood, Texas to relieve 2nd Armor in November of 1957. We spent 60% of of our time in the field training hard to punish the the Russians & their lackys if they tried to cross the border. It was the toughest thing I ever did in my life, but I learned lessons that would change my life forever. In our Reunion group we tell people "We weren't in the Army, we were in the 4th Armored Division". The best of the best!

I was with the Headquarters & A Company, 126th Maintenance Battalion from March 1968 through June 1969. I worked in the Materiel Office for Major Donald Cook. As a draftee, I was quite happy to be there rather than in Vietnam Lots of good times - great beer, better women.

paul krause:

I am the son of SFC Roger Enos. He was stationed at Monteith 9/61 to 8/64. We lived on post at Jakob Wasserman Strasse. Does any of that exist anymore? Does anyone know the name of Monteith when it was a German army base?

I was just 8 to 10 yo at the time, but the picture of the gate is familiar to me.

Anyone who has stories get in touch.

Thanks

Eddie:
Before it was Monteith Barracks, the place was called Atzenhof Kaserne.

Came over to Germany in May 1966 as an artilleryman. Later "asked" to move to the 4th Armored finance office and assigned to Monteith Barracks Jan 67 until Dec 67. If I remember right, we were billetted at the 2/37 armor barracks --- enter from the main gate and made a left. The finance office was next door to the 504th Aviation mess hall. Very good times.
