I'm trying to help a German Frau who was saved from suffociation
by an American soldier in March 1968 in Schwabach. I have been
in touch with more than a dozen men who were in O'Brien Barracks
in Schwabach at the time, and no one remembers this incident,
where a GI administered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to a baby
who had somehow become entangled in her blankets in her crib.
The "baby" is trying to find the man who saved her. Help! (She
contacted me because I was in O'Brien Barracks in 1968, but I
had left in January.) Any information would be appreciated.

Looking for people who knew my dad. His name was Donald Burnett.
I am not sure what barracks he was in but I do know that he was
in 3rd Battalion 37th Armor Division.
I want to say Company C, not sure though. He was popular with
the ladies, and is said to have a child who was born in Germany,
to a woman named Christina. I have her last name, but don't
think it appropriate to put on an open forum area.
I remember daddy telling us stories about some things he and his
buddies did, but unfortunately in my youth I never knew what
information would be more valuable in the future.
He was there, in Germany, in 1967-1968. He had a nickname,
"Duck." He loved to drink with his buddy "Tut"? I remember that
name because I thought it sounded funny when I was a kid. I have
some photos from his time in the service. I would like to share
them with folks but not sure if I can do that here. I will be
adding them to the account at Military.com, as soon as I figure
out how to do that. I also have to drag them out of the attic. I
believe there are names on some of the photos.
Anyway, I love reading all of your comments.
Bob:
Rhonda, sorry, I didn't know your dad. Times were crazy back
then. We all were so happy to be in Germany and not in
Vietnam. Germany was a great place to be stationed and most
of us were just kids. Keep looking, maybe someone will know
him. Sounds like you have a stepbrother or sister in
Germany.
|
Just Tesch:
Rhonda, I was there in 68-69 at Darby but just checked out
Ferris Barracks and I see lots of posts about the 2/37 and
one or two references to 3/37. perhaps you could do some
digging in Ferris barracks and get a hit. I don't recall any
armor at Darby during that period. Good luck

alive. The only names I can remember is Sargent John Hall,
Jackson nickname is "freak", and Diamond. Never saw any of them

since then. I also need to find out what happened for my own

I was assigned to the 127th AG Det Postal from Jan73-Jan75 at
William O Darby Kaserne we were billeted across from Hq's my
room was on the second floor. The MP's were also in the same
building with us, our BPO was at Johnson Barracks, where we
would receive and distribute mail. I had a number of jobs
including unloading parcel post and bulk mail and sorting to the
outline units, and the insured room. I also had a courier job
where I would use 1st Trans as drivers and we would take a 40
foot container full of mail to Offenbach and bring one back, I
also was on the Munich mail run as well as Amberg, Hohenfiels.
During my last year I was assigned to the Furth Exchange and
worked at the post office. My wife arrived in April 73 and
stayed until april 75, our first apt was in Oberasbach, no gas
stove but we had briquettes and coal for the water heater, soon
moved to 51 Barenshanz Str. My wifes name was Cris, we would
always have short timer partys at our place, there was also a
number of MP's that lived there. My son was born at the Nurnberg
Army Hospital in Oct 74.
I sure miss 1/2 chicken with pomme fritz, and a bottle of tucher
or lambrusco, or weinerwald, or Wimpys, foosball in the

I was at JB from 81-84. HHC, 16th Eng. Bn. I worked in the S-3
shop with Sgt George Farley, Sgt Pence, Spc Mark Hylton, Spc
David (Rhino) Rhinehart, Spc Pasqual, SSG Keith, Lt Jones and
many others I can't remember right now. Those were the best 3
years of my career. I think of the Kris Kringle Mart every
Christmas and wish I was there. Reading everyones stories about
ARTEP's, Gama Goats and fest's sure bring back the memories.
It's sad that our Kaserne is gone but we were lucky to have
experienced it. That piece of history is our's forever. I loved
the pictures of the buildings and I will try to find mine so I
can add them for others to see. Take care, Merry Christmas and

Hello-
I was born at Nurenburg Army Hospital in 1970. My father was
stationed at the Herzo Base from about 1968-1970. He served
almost two full tours in Vietnam. After a bad incident in Plei
Ku, he was sent to Herzo for the remainder of his tour. Once
there, he brought my mother over and then I showed up. My dads
name was Ronald Hile. He died in 1985 at the age of 41. I am
trying to find anyone who remembers him. Right before I was
born, I know he ran around the Herzo base stenciling Think
Pink on anything that wasnt moving.
I have heard my parents stories of their time there and the
people they knew, and I know it was a happy time in their lives.
We have slide after slide (somewhere in the area of 9000 of
them
my dad was a camera buff) and looked to be wonderful. I had
wanted to see these places before I die, but I had no idea that
they were all gone.
At any rate, I was hoping to hook up with people who were there
around the time my parents were and see if anyone remembers
them.
Thank you for your time!!

room mates made me drink too much beir and I forgot most of
them. LOL

I was a medic there too from 76-79 and the medics then also
drank too much. I don't remember being part of a platoon
though, we were just a group that pulled sick call in the AM
then we were done for the day.

Great site! I was a LT with the 2 Bn, 14th Artillery (initailly
105mm SP M52's and then 155mm SP M109's) from OCT 63 thru JUL
65. On 30 Nov, 2007, I visited the old barracks while on a trip
to Nurnberg for the Christmas markets. I took a bunch of photos
and have uploaded them. It was a real kick to tromp thru the old
buildings. The old barracks areas are abandoned and derelict.
The old officer's club is renovated and an office building now.
There is a huge pile of something North of the Kasern with solar
panels all over it. I don't know what that is.
The only buddy that I am still in contact with is Ed Donati,
having lost contact with Hans Dallhousen, Bobby Moore, Bill
Bakkeby, Bob Allen and others. Good memories of winters in Graf.

was in Nuernberg for a long time. Came back to the states in 85.
Have not had the opportunity to go back. My Buddy and Pal

Hello to all who served, I was stationed with the 1st Trans. Co.
1970-72 attached to W.O.Darby / Furth / Nurnberg.
We held of first, 1st Trans. Co. Reunion recently in Newport
News, Va. on 4 Oct. thru 8 Oct. 2007.
We had a excellent time with one of the highlights being
visiting the U.S. Army Transportation Museum at Ft. Eustis.
On the final evening we had a cookout on the motel property
which turn out great since some people live in the general area
(one person lived only 20 minutes away) and more people were
able to attend the idea of the cookout was to be able to mix and
mingle with everyone.
The reunion was great I look forward with anticipation to the
next reunion scheduled tentively for the 2nd week in Oct. in
2008.

I was stationed at Pinder Barracks in 77 thru 81, in the 1/22FA.
I remember the guard shack and the little sleeping quarters, the
pizza shack outside. I remember the NCO club, drinking double
shots of tequilla and falling in the snow on the way back to the
barracks. I remember the man in the barracks getting drunk and
jumping out the 2nd story of the barracks and breaking his leg,
I hope he is okay! I remember the closed off entrance way behind
the barracks that they said led to the tunnels underground. I
remember the way they crushed their cars. I lost my 59 and 63
beetle. The craft shop that worked on the cars. I remember
running PT with my gas mask on. And I remember Charlie Brown,
Too Tall and SGT Martinez. SGT Lubish

Hello... I just happened to run across this website, as I was
looking for pictures of Schwabach. It's been wonderful reading
the posts and also crying like a baby, because it's bringing
back so many memories. Although they were tough times with
Vietnam, they were also the (happy) ones I remember the most.
I was an Army brat and lived in Schwabach from 1966-1973. My mom
ran the Stars & Stripes bookstore across from the motorpool at
O'Brien Barracks. We were located just inside the main gate,
around from the MP Station. She later worked at the PX.
Unfortunately, there are only a few names I remember...
Joe Chaison, Larry McCarter, and Jeff Short. I was the youngest
of 3. If anybody remembers... just say "hi".

Hello
My first permanent home station was at the US Army Hospital
Nurnberg in 1976-1979. It was my first time to travel to Europe.
This was the cold war era but I felt the local Germans were
mostly wonderful people. I worked as a pharmacy specialist but
had several additional duties. I must say, Germany has been the
cleanest country I have seen in my 29 years of military
traveling. The food was one of the best mess halls in my
military career. It's sad to hear the Hospital is no longer
there, but it does exist in the hearts and minds of the people
who worked there in some part of their lifetime. I do wish to
travel back but I'm afraid to see this reality. As far as I know
it, the hospital still exists and so do many of the people
during that time period. CHEERS!! :-)
Gordy Thomas:
I always tell people what great food we had at the hospital
dining room. I arrived in 77 and was there through 82, also
played in a couple of bands off duty. I probably got free
benadryl from you when I couldn't sleep after graveyard
shift on 5 Male Surg. |

Greetings,
I will be in Nurenberg from 9-11 through 9-20 of 2007. If anyone
else will be there during this time, let's meet for a Tucher or
2 and re-hash old memories.
Each time I walk in front of Merrell Barracks I'll be thinking
of all the friends, both American and German, that I met when I
was stationed there. I return often, and Merrell still is my
first 'must see' on my list.
Louis:
did you make it to nurnberg? I was there from 88-90,
jbarracks. Hopefully you had a great time:) |
David Miller:
I recently visited Germany ( Sept 07). I to have fond
memories of Merrell Barracks. This was my first tour in
Germany. I did laugh, when I saw the pizza stand (still
there). I will revisit germany in September. This time for
two weeks. |
Doug Schnider:
Yes I did make it back. Also returned 09/08 for 10 days.
Can't get enough of Nurnberg, I guess. I have a fave Hotel,
a resturant that knows me by name and a few new friends. I
guess I'll keep going back until they deny me entry to
Germany!! |

I was born in 16th Field Hospital in 1952 and my sister in 1953.
We left for the States in Dec 1953. My parents were CWO Rufus
Jones (70th Armored Field Artillery Battalion?) and Barbara
Jones. Does anyone remember my parents? Also, I am searching for
my German "nanny," who as of Nov 1954 lived in Nuremberg (I have
that address) as I want so much to meet her or family. I
understand that German citizens must register each time they
move. Can anyone direct me about who to contact in Germany (and
I don't speak German) to perhaps backtrack to 1954 to locate her
or find out if/when she died? Any ideas from any of you who
lived there? Thanks again!
