Baumholder or some place similar instead of the ten Mbg MILCOM
facilities!
Met my wife, Kerstin, there at Furth.

I was assigned to the 10th AHB, which deactivated sometime in
1987 or 88; I was a 67Y (Cobra Crewchief). HHT 1/1 CAV in
Katterbach was the new unit name. The Apaches (AH-64) came to
Illeshiem before the 10th AHB disbanned. SFC Mathis (retired
before 10th AHB disbanned)he was the platoon NCOIC; SGT Carlos
Herrerra was my squad leader. A top notch test-pilot WO-4 took
me on my first testflight and I experienced my first
auto-rotation. The C.O. overtorqued a few times, which kept us
busy. I overcame some issues and left the Army with Honor. It
was an honor serving my country in the 10th AHB and 1/1 CAV.

I served at William O. Darby Kaserne from 1976 to 1979 in the
127th AG Det. (Postal), doing a multitude of jobs. My fondest
memory was when I was a courier. Every night at 7pm, a driver
from 1st Trans.at Johnson Barracks would meet me at the Base
Post Office (Johnson Barracks). We would hook up to a
trailer-load of mail that we hauled up to Offenbach. From there,
we went to Reine-Main AFB and dropped a trailer there. We would
eat midnight chow at the mess hall (man, those Air Force people
really knew how to eat!), and retrace our steps all the way back
to Nurnberg. I lived in Bldg. 41 on Darby Kaserne. Great, great
memories.
Bob McEvoy:
With the 27 th base post office '52-54 We were also billited
in bldg #41 but the BPO wasin Furth near the railrood
station back then.
|
SP4 Steve Aguilar:
I also was with the 127th AG Det (Postal)form Jan 1973, to
Jan 1975. I also had many jobs including unloading bulk
mail, sorting mail at Johnson Barracks Base Post Office,
working at the Furth exchange post office, I was very fond
of beinbg a courier, I also had the route from
Nurnberg/Furth to Offenbach and Rhein Main, then back to
Nurnberg, I also had the Amnberg Hohnefiels, Graffonweir,
and Munich mail routes, it gave me an oportunity to see the
country, we would change routes if you got tired of going to
Frankfurt we would change to Munich, especially during
Octoberfest, we also would stay with friends that worked at
the BPO in Munich at the Mcgraw Kasern there billetts were
apartments in the city. We would utilize 1st Trans drivers,
sign a manifest check out a .45 and hit the road, drop off a
load and pick up a load. Enjoyed the drive to Amberg &
Hohnefiels as well along the river, especially in fall. We
lived in Bldg. 41 but I also had apartment in Oberasbach,
and later in Nurnburg. I hope to visit in 2007 |

I have been coming to wonderful Nurnberg every other year, for a

time, I begin to look forward to my trip with great
anticipation. I always buy any US Military a round of beers

every year. And that's probably a good thing, over all. Hope to

I was at 4th Armd Div (later 1st Armd Div) Hq in Goeppingen
(Cooke Bks) from 1970 to 1972. When we went up the Nurnberg
area, we stayed at the Bavarian-American Hotel. Anyone know its
fate? Cooke Barracks has been closed, given back to government,
mostly torn down, and turned into an office park.

Served with C Troop 1/1 Cav at Schwabach from Sep 1977 to June
1980. I was in the GSR section. Remember vividly 1SG Vobelt
(Big, Crazy, German born 1SG) and so many others. Was there on 1
December 1978 when 1/1 Cav took over Camp Pitman permanently.
Made every border tour after that. Worked with a lot of guys
from the GSR sections from the other battalions in the Division,
so if you remember working with Charlie Troop during that time
give me an e-mail. Same goes for the guys from the GSR Sections
in the other Troops of 1/1 Cav. I'm going back in August of 2006
to see what's left of O'Brien Barracks. Also going to the
Czech/German Border with a camera this time and not a rifle.
Going to cross and take a picture of Germany from the Czech
side. The way I see it we all did our part to make such a thing
possible!

I was assigned to the 793rd MP in Fuerth, then spent my last 18
months TDY with the 569th Personnel Center at Merrell Barracks.
I lived by the Tiergarten, and almost as soon as I was
discharged, I wished I was back in Nuremberg.
I have returned 3 out of the last 4 years, revisiting old haunts
(those that are still there) and hoping to run into old friends.
I can retire next year, and plan on spending the summer in
Bavaria, mainly Nuremberg.
I was stationed there in 72-74.

:-) and :-(
I'm obviously very ambivalent about all this stuff. Having been
drafted into Tricky Dicky's war at the tail-end in 1972 and then
being stationed at the 130th General Hospital for 2 years of my
young life has left me with scars, good memories, friends, lots
of photos...whatever! I was a Medical Specialist (SP4), lived in
the hospital's GI barracks, tried to play my trumpet and worked
mostly in the OB/GYN and ICU/Newborn Nursery for the entire time
that I was there. Therefore, if you had a child born there, or
were yourself born there, I probably had some type of contact
with you. Especially the males, since I performed, or assisted
in performing almost all of the circumcisions ;-) I remember a
great team of awesome, caring, loving! RN's there and a Sgt M.
who always had a lot of Hypertension issues. The MD's there left
me with the motivation to go on and pursue a career in medicine.
Thanks to the GI Bill but only after UCLA, I became a Social
Worker instead. So I feel I owe a lot of who I am, and what I do
to my military experience. However, I am still bitter about
having my music taken away. Yeah, I'm still a frustrated trumpet
player, but am happy serving the Disabled who I work with. I'd
love to speak with anyone who was at the 130th circa 72-75.
Peace be with you always. Frans

Hello,
My name is Jenny and my father was stationed at the Nurnberg
Army Hospital during his time served with the Army. While he was
there he had written letters to the state officials from each
American state requesting flags from their state to be sent to
him. He gathered almost all of the flags and flagpoles and was
scheduling these flags to be placed around the circular drive of
the hospital. Well, before this project was completed, he was
deployed back to the states, and has not been back to Germany
since. We recently discovered that the hospital was torn down
and my father was devastated, knowing that he would never be
able to see the flags dispayed that he worked so hard to put
there. If there is any way possible that you could locate
pictures of the flags in the driveway for me, I would be so
grateful. I have been looking everywhere, and so has my father.
This would be the greatest Father's day gift ever, if I could
show him photos of these flags. This means so much to him and
now our whole family. Thank you for your time and consideration.
I will await your response with great anticipation.
Thank you,
Jenny

HELLO HERZO BUDDIES !!
I was stationed at HERZO BASE from 1984-1985 with HHB 3/37TH FA
BN. (3rd PLT COMMO) My Platoon Sergeant was SSG Rodgers, the
Platoon Leader was 2LT Larry O'Neal. Our CO was CPT Richard B.
Leap, & our BN CO was LTC Samuel W. Floca. I believe the BN SGM
was SGM Dameron from Fayetteville, NC.
Some of my old running buddies were CPL Howard R. "RAY" Boone
from Camden, SC, & SGT Michael "BAT-FINK" Fink from Wisconsin.
Last time I saw Ray was in 1986 after he had ETS'd, saw Mike in
1989 during a visit to Herzo while on vacation. Always wondered
about the base and the people, I know it closed in 1992, and
this year (FEB 2006) I understand that they TORE DOWN the MAIN
GATE & NCO CLUB.
Life has been pretty good, I settled down, have a family and a
GREAT SON ADAM who gets all of my spare time. Left the Army for
good in 1991, and have made a career out of working as a
FIREFIGHTER / PARAMEDIC for the last 15 years, having went to
NYC to help after 09/11/2001.
Would LOVE TO HEAR FROM ANYONE who remembers the GOOD OLD DAYS

I was stationed at WO Darby from 1969 to 1972, in the 511th MI.
That is where I met & married my wife, a New Zealander who was
traveling through. We are planning on returning there this
October, 35 years later, and I am trying to find out how things
look now.
Eddie:
I met my wife in Nürnberg also. We usually try to go back
every year to visit her relatives. Nürnberg has changed a
bit. Like there arn't many street cars running above ground
now. They put most of them underground and it seems a little
strange with no GI's running around town.
Most of the downtown Nürnberg is an all walking area now,
like an outdoor mall.
Outside of what I mentioned above, it is mostly the same.
Great beer and food with all the fests going. |

Great site. Was in Darby 1981-1983. Sounds like many changes. I
loved Germany! Did not know the small base was closed. I
probably would not recognize Furth. I did not see or experiance
any crime around the base. However there was an officer thrown
out a window in a locker and killed.I miss most the great
markets downtown. It was a happy time and place in my youth.Hope
to see it all again someday when time allows.
James Urban:
I remember that night when the staff duty officer tried to
walk the cat walk and someone or the room was full of drug
smoked and loud music when the officer was thrown out. after
the the bn Commander stated he died, some of the unit called
he "SPIDERMAN" and they never found out. ever since then the
unit marked the windows with the room numbers and btry
floor. I was in the 1st bn 94th F.A. I still miss the
Chicago Club and the bier and the food from the pizzeria
next to the Chicago club. |

I was station at O'Darby Kaserne from 1975 - 1978. I was with
the 569th Personnel and then called the Nuremburg Regional
Personnel Center. Funny thing is I went to Germany as a 11C and
was put to work in personnel. At the time they needed clerks and
not ground pounders.
I too had a great time - well mostly. ON July 3, 1975 (Our
Bicentennial) I was sitting in the Rec center, it was a warm
night, and I was restless. I decided to take a walk. I ended up
walking along the raised canal near Merrill Barracks when I was
approach by two GIs and they mugged me. Too make things worst,
as they were leaving they threw a large steel ball bearing at me
and hit me in the forehead. This crack my skull and I then had
the pleasure of spending 6 weeks in the hospital. There they
clean out the broken bone and let me heal with a "hole" in my
head for about 6 months until they could fill it up with some
sort of plastic. Oh well it could have been worse.... I then
rotated back to the states and eventually had another tour in
Heidelberg at HQ. I enjoyed my time there also. Sometimes I get
the places and faces mixed up from Nuremburg and Heidelberg. :)
Doug Schnider:
Sorry to hear about your mugging episode. I was stationed at
Merrell with the 569th from Oct 72 until April 74. You
definitly didn't walk around, both inside and outside the
barracks, without looking over your shoulder. Lots of
muggings, knifings and robberies.
So, what ever happened to the 569th? Did it move to Darby?
I have returned to Nuremberg the last few springs, and
always take a few strolls past the Merrell Kaserne. Mostly
good memories, though very strange not to see thousands of
GI's running amok through the city.
Later
Doug Schnider |
Curtis Riley:
Sorry to hear that you got mugged.
I was with the 569th PSC from feb 1973 to Aug 1975. In jan
1975 the 569yh moved from Merrell Barrack to W O Darby
Kaserne. I'm trying to remember you, but need more info. I
worked in outprocessing most ot the time. Some of the othe
guys there wer Ron Elliott, a white guy everybody called
"Redbone", Mike Way, Roger Swanke, and a bunch of WAC's.
give a shout back. |
David Santoro:
Curtis Riley - I don't recall you but I do recall a guy
called Redbone- was he always snapping his fingers? I
initially working the the records repository then worked in
the customer server area. I was a Spec 4 and then made SGT -
Not a spec 5 because I actually had a 11C (infantry) MOS. I
roomed with Ron Ryan. |

appartment complex also 1/94th the former Gym is called Grüne
Halle (green Hall). There is a Café, lots of fruit and
vegetables,Sushi bar a bakery and also cultural events. Behind
the former gym is big park, with playgrounds , next to the gym a
Kindergarden. The bookstore, the little snackbar and the
recreation Center is now a Moschee and meetingplace for the
moslems. The church is still a church. No bowling anymore, there
are houses now. And the 49er is still empty.........lot more has
changed. Greetings from Germany

I grew up in Furth. Used to go to school
across the street from William Odarby.
On the way to the street car after school on Flossau Str. passed
the main gate, there was a corner building, maybe an E.M. club
with a lot of GI's
hanging around. We used to try out our
school English on them. They in turn wanted to learn some German
phrases to pick up girls. We had a good time with them. That was
in the early 50's.
I came to the States in '55 and was drafted in June '60.
Unfortunately I didn't get to go to Germany. Spent my
whole tour of duty in Ft. Dix in the MP's. Glad to have found

Hi Guys,
it's great for me to find those pages.
I was looking in Yahoo for a possibility to find an old american
friend, who was stationed at Herzobase around 1970. His name is
John Lightcap and he was coming from Philadelphia.Latest
address, we have is from Feasterville, PA. We had a pretty good
time together and unfortunatelly we lost contact. During
xmas-time we found an old addressbook...but I'm sure he moved
several times. Anybody has an idea how to find out addresses of
former army people from Germany? Best regards from Erlangen,
Dietmar.
Eddie:
Go to www.military.com and use their search for military
people.
Usually there will be several names come up. Check out the
ones from the state he comes from. |
Nicki Metts:
I've located 20 guys from my dad's unit, 24th Engineering
1961-64, using switchboard.com
with a name like "lightcap" there can't be to many. You'll
be very surprised at how helpful people are.

I (German) worked at W.O.Darby in Fuerth from 1969-1970

was with the MP's. I worked at the HQ's and Transportation. Then
I worked again in the 70"s, 80"s in Housing,Transportation and
Engineering.
I am looking for old co-workers who worked with me. Former Lilo
Kisskalt fr. Nbg. worked@ Transp. then at Merrell. Karin, we
worked together at Transportation, she was from the Wuerzburg
area. A co Worker I worked with at Nbg HQ's who now lives in New
York?? Another co worker, Linda,Ilse, who worked with me at
Personnel.I tried the Nbg GB, no response. maybe I have luck
this time. Sure would be nice if I could find someone.
I do miss Fuerth and it was terrible when I drove thru the whole
area after it was closed.
Well, Hello to everyone and if you think you might know me,

run to the barracks for formation. I ran because I was in my

reply was...this is my job, I work, I spend my money here, and
someday I will leave, hopefully with happy memories. I spent all

websites on the net about the area since they closed all the

the Ferris Barracks site. When I seen that site, I said to

I spent a lot of time in the Fürth Main PX. I wasn't stationed
in the area around Nürnberg, but I hopped a train and went to
the PX there a couple times a month. Loved to go the sound shop
there. The small PX were I was stationed didn't have much.
Most of the married guys here went a few times a month to the
Main Conversary there for groceries. Sometimes I could get a
ride with them.
Great to find this Nürnberg Military Area Guestbook and the
message board.
