I've included my car club site for pictures. This is terrific! :-) I have been following another site on Nurnberg/Furth and the Nurnberg MILCOM. I am now with DPW, Ft. Campbell, KY as a DA Civilian. I was at Darby as the Installation Coordinator from 1987 to 1990. Great place, great people and I hope to hear from some of them. I stay in touch with both German and American friends from there. Sure wish they would have given back Baumholder or some place similar instead of the ten Mbg MILCOM facilities!
Met my wife, Kerstin, there at Furth.
Best wishes to all,
Bill Coke

My name has changed now to Sunny(which I was known as) Blackmore. I was in 614th Maint. From Feb '80 until about May '81. I was a truck driver with the unit and I loved it. There were no women in the German Army and not even a few women driving trucks in civillian life...it was wonderful A great ego booster. I would love to hear from anyone that was in the same unit I was in. I loved my time there. :-)

What a great website. I was stationed in the 42nd HEM at Darby from 1973 until 1976. Married a great german gal 30 years ago from Nurnberg. I would like to hear from anyone else in the 303rd Maint. Bn. or anyone who was a member of the Nurnber ski club. Those were some great times :-)

David Claycomb:
Hey Steeve I was also stationed in the 42nd HEM at Darby from 1972 to 1973 and was in the amament platoon. I was in Germany just last summer and went to the castle in Nurnburg and the old part of town is still pretty much the same, but I got lost trying to find the W.O.Darby

I was assigned to the 10th AHB, which deactivated sometime in 1987 or 88; I was a 67Y (Cobra Crewchief). HHT 1/1 CAV in Katterbach was the new unit name. The Apaches (AH-64) came to Illeshiem before the 10th AHB disbanned. SFC Mathis (retired before 10th AHB disbanned)he was the platoon NCOIC; SGT Carlos Herrerra was my squad leader. A top notch test-pilot WO-4 took me on my first testflight and I experienced my first auto-rotation. The C.O. overtorqued a few times, which kept us busy. I overcame some issues and left the Army with Honor. It was an honor serving my country in the 10th AHB and 1/1 CAV.

I served at William O. Darby Kaserne from 1976 to 1979 in the 127th AG Det. (Postal), doing a multitude of jobs. My fondest memory was when I was a courier. Every night at 7pm, a driver from 1st Trans.at Johnson Barracks would meet me at the Base Post Office (Johnson Barracks). We would hook up to a trailer-load of mail that we hauled up to Offenbach. From there, we went to Reine-Main AFB and dropped a trailer there. We would eat midnight chow at the mess hall (man, those Air Force people really knew how to eat!), and retrace our steps all the way back to Nurnberg. I lived in Bldg. 41 on Darby Kaserne. Great, great memories.

Bob McEvoy:
With the 27 th base post office '52-54 We were also billited in bldg #41 but the BPO wasin Furth near the railrood station back then.

SP4 Steve Aguilar:
I also was with the 127th AG Det (Postal)form Jan 1973, to Jan 1975. I also had many jobs including unloading bulk mail, sorting mail at Johnson Barracks Base Post Office, working at the Furth exchange post office, I was very fond of beinbg a courier, I also had the route from Nurnberg/Furth to Offenbach and Rhein Main, then back to Nurnberg, I also had the Amnberg Hohnefiels, Graffonweir, and Munich mail routes, it gave me an oportunity to see the country, we would change routes if you got tired of going to Frankfurt we would change to Munich, especially during Octoberfest, we also would stay with friends that worked at the BPO in Munich at the Mcgraw Kasern there billetts were apartments in the city. We would utilize 1st Trans drivers, sign a manifest check out a .45 and hit the road, drop off a load and pick up a load. Enjoyed the drive to Amberg & Hohnefiels as well along the river, especially in fall. We lived in Bldg. 41 but I also had apartment in Oberasbach, and later in Nurnburg. I hope to visit in 2007

knaomi@bellsouthnet:
Hi, I was station at william O Darby in nuernberg 74 to 76 I was the chaplain asst. on post at that time I was sp4 Naomi Rbinson. Husband Dennis was chaplain asst too.

I have been coming to wonderful Nurnberg every other year, for a trade show, for the past twenty five years. Every year about this time, I begin to look forward to my trip with great anticipation. I always buy any US Military a round of beers whenever and wherever I see them. But there are less and less every year. And that's probably a good thing, over all. Hope to raise a Tucher with you all.
Cheers,
TS

Eddie:
I usually hit Nürnberg at least once a year also and I'm like you. Always look foward to it. Most of the time, we try to plan our visits when a fest is going on.

Always have a great time.

:-) I am very happy to be finding so many sites that are on the internet just to help us re-connect. I am a former Army Brat. We lived at the Furth Housing Area from 1983-1985. I have to say that my time in Nurnberg was the best time of my life! I am looking to re-connect with some old friends as well as make some new ones! I hope to hear from some of you! If anyone knows anything about Jesse Whitehead (who would have been born around 70-72 or so) PLEASE let me know or tell him to contact me! We were in school together in Germnay and then at Fort Stewart (Hinesville), GA!

69th Chemical Company at Monteith Baracks from 81 to 84. Anyone remember the pink church across the street from Haupt Bahnhoff in Nurnberg? Strange place. One day my friend Giuseppe Saia took a picture of this huge punk rock chick while she was walking out in front of the pink church. She walked over to him , took his camera and smashed it on the ground. I remember thinking to myself, I think Im going to like this place.

Tom Lewandowski (AKA Ski):
I lived in the 69th bldg. I was with the 501st CAB, The only unit with helicopters on Montieth. I was there Feb.79-Sept.81. Everyone called me SKI. Ring any bells??

I was in the 556 Ord Co at Pinder Barracks which was in Zirndorf, Germany. I was there from 1962 to 1964. In 1964 I was TDY to the 517th Ord Det at Merrell Barracks in Nurnberg. I have many fond memories from both places. Nurnberg was a big city environment with many interesting places to visit, while Zirndorf was a small town environment with many very friendly people. I have a yahoo 360 page with many pictures both old and new that I have tried to gather for others who might be interested. I am also a member of a yahoo Pinder Barracks Group and A yahoo 556 Ord Co group. I am interested in finding anybody that shares any of these experiances.

I moved to W.O.Darby with the 1st Trans Co from Orleans France in 1964.I really don't remember the building number, but we were on the top floor, just above the floor for Turkish workers. They cooked all of their meals and stairwells always smelled like onions. Spent 2 weeks day and night making the barracks livable. No one had lived there in a long time. Left Darby in 1967 for Vietnam. I would love to hear from anyone at Darby during that time or after, especially First Truckers.

Stationed in Monteith Barracks 1968-69. Anyone remember the Soviets invading Czech. during our watch? How about Mom's guest house (German potato salad), at the end of the runway?

Tom Stalgaitis, 126th Mnt:
Because of the Ruskie invasion of Czech I ended up at Monteith Barracks instead of Viet Nam. A little colder but a lot safer.

Eddie - Rollner Str 43:
Had a great time in Germany. Loved all the different potatoe salads. Seemed like every place had their own kind.

Indy Guy:
I married a girl from Nürnberg and she makes the greatest potato salad. She has 2 or 3 diffenent kinds. She makes one that is served hot with bacon and onions in it. That's my favorite.

I was at 4th Armd Div (later 1st Armd Div) Hq in Goeppingen (Cooke Bks) from 1970 to 1972. When we went up the Nurnberg area, we stayed at the Bavarian-American Hotel. Anyone know its fate? Cooke Barracks has been closed, given back to government, mostly torn down, and turned into an office park.

Lori S. NYC:
The Bavarian American Hotel has some other organisation there now. going back next month and will let you know what's there now.

Served with C Troop 1/1 Cav at Schwabach from Sep 1977 to June 1980. I was in the GSR section. Remember vividly 1SG Vobelt (Big, Crazy, German born 1SG) and so many others. Was there on 1 December 1978 when 1/1 Cav took over Camp Pitman permanently. Made every border tour after that. Worked with a lot of guys from the GSR sections from the other battalions in the Division, so if you remember working with Charlie Troop during that time give me an e-mail. Same goes for the guys from the GSR Sections in the other Troops of 1/1 Cav. I'm going back in August of 2006 to see what's left of O'Brien Barracks. Also going to the Czech/German Border with a camera this time and not a rifle. Going to cross and take a picture of Germany from the Czech side. The way I see it we all did our part to make such a thing possible!

TFG:
you are so right....to cross the border is all we get. Maybe when you are there someone just might say thanks, doubt it but ya never know. Job well done

I was assigned to the 793rd MP in Fuerth, then spent my last 18 months TDY with the 569th Personnel Center at Merrell Barracks. I lived by the Tiergarten, and almost as soon as I was discharged, I wished I was back in Nuremberg.
I have returned 3 out of the last 4 years, revisiting old haunts (those that are still there) and hoping to run into old friends. I can retire next year, and plan on spending the summer in Bavaria, mainly Nuremberg.
I was stationed there in 72-74.

:-) and :-(
I'm obviously very ambivalent about all this stuff. Having been drafted into Tricky Dicky's war at the tail-end in 1972 and then being stationed at the 130th General Hospital for 2 years of my young life has left me with scars, good memories, friends, lots of photos...whatever! I was a Medical Specialist (SP4), lived in the hospital's GI barracks, tried to play my trumpet and worked mostly in the OB/GYN and ICU/Newborn Nursery for the entire time that I was there. Therefore, if you had a child born there, or were yourself born there, I probably had some type of contact with you. Especially the males, since I performed, or assisted in performing almost all of the circumcisions ;-) I remember a great team of awesome, caring, loving! RN's there and a Sgt M. who always had a lot of Hypertension issues. The MD's there left me with the motivation to go on and pursue a career in medicine. Thanks to the GI Bill but only after UCLA, I became a Social Worker instead. So I feel I owe a lot of who I am, and what I do to my military experience. However, I am still bitter about having my music taken away. Yeah, I'm still a frustrated trumpet player, but am happy serving the Disabled who I work with. I'd love to speak with anyone who was at the 130th circa 72-75. Peace be with you always. Frans

Hello,
My name is Jenny and my father was stationed at the Nurnberg Army Hospital during his time served with the Army. While he was there he had written letters to the state officials from each American state requesting flags from their state to be sent to him. He gathered almost all of the flags and flagpoles and was scheduling these flags to be placed around the circular drive of the hospital. Well, before this project was completed, he was deployed back to the states, and has not been back to Germany since. We recently discovered that the hospital was torn down and my father was devastated, knowing that he would never be able to see the flags dispayed that he worked so hard to put there. If there is any way possible that you could locate pictures of the flags in the driveway for me, I would be so grateful. I have been looking everywhere, and so has my father. This would be the greatest Father's day gift ever, if I could show him photos of these flags. This means so much to him and now our whole family. Thank you for your time and consideration. I will await your response with great anticipation.
Thank you,
Jenny

PAtricia:

If you think you know me it was a CID spy maybe that why I don’t remember anyone from 182, I loved Zirndorf its where I grow up. I remember going out every week end and talking to the old people there and understanding how they felt I learn a lot about history plus more about myself.

Sincerely,
Alfred Gonzalez

I was with the 511th MI Company from 1969thru 1970 at W.O. Darby concern. It was a great organization during some interesting times, cold war, vietnam. I have managed to keep in touch with Rich Evans and Dave Merritt who served there at the same time. I also have located Mr. Bruce E. Burgoyne who was a civilian division chief at the time. I am still working for the Army as a civilian contracted consultant having put in 32 years a DA civil servant. I look forward to hearing from you all. :-)

Judy Bos:
I worked at the 511 Mi Bn from 1977-79 as a secretary, civil service. Loved the job and the people, but this was after your time there. Don't remember the Bldg #, do have a pic of it however. Does 511th have reunions?

HELLO HERZO BUDDIES !!

I was stationed at HERZO BASE from 1984-1985 with HHB 3/37TH FA BN. (3rd PLT COMMO) My Platoon Sergeant was SSG Rodgers, the Platoon Leader was 2LT Larry O'Neal. Our CO was CPT Richard B. Leap, & our BN CO was LTC Samuel W. Floca. I believe the BN SGM was SGM Dameron from Fayetteville, NC.

Some of my old running buddies were CPL Howard R. "RAY" Boone from Camden, SC, & SGT Michael "BAT-FINK" Fink from Wisconsin. Last time I saw Ray was in 1986 after he had ETS'd, saw Mike in 1989 during a visit to Herzo while on vacation. Always wondered about the base and the people, I know it closed in 1992, and this year (FEB 2006) I understand that they TORE DOWN the MAIN GATE & NCO CLUB.

Life has been pretty good, I settled down, have a family and a GREAT SON ADAM who gets all of my spare time. Left the Army for good in 1991, and have made a career out of working as a FIREFIGHTER / PARAMEDIC for the last 15 years, having went to NYC to help after 09/11/2001.

Would LOVE TO HEAR FROM ANYONE who remembers the GOOD OLD DAYS AT HERZO!!

Best Wishes,
Gary

Grettings Everyone,
I was stationed at Ferris barracks, 3rd/37th Armor from 02/69 thru 06/71. I reflect often about those who served with me. I can see thier faces etched forever in my head. Names long forgotten, save for a few. I wish all the best to you and yours for those who served in Erlangen and wherever else stationed.

I was stationed at WO Darby from 1969 to 1972, in the 511th MI. That is where I met & married my wife, a New Zealander who was traveling through. We are planning on returning there this October, 35 years later, and I am trying to find out how things look now.

Eddie:
I met my wife in Nürnberg also. We usually try to go back every year to visit her relatives. Nürnberg has changed a bit. Like there arn't many street cars running above ground now. They put most of them underground and it seems a little strange with no GI's running around town.

Most of the downtown Nürnberg is an all walking area now, like an outdoor mall.

Outside of what I mentioned above, it is mostly the same. Great beer and food with all the fests going.

I lived in building 41 the big long 5 story building. if you care to see some of the things that have been done to that kaserne since it was given back to the germans go to www dot nbg-mil-com dot de/Darby/da dot html

I am very happy to see that they have kept old building 41 and much of the post in tack.

I would be happy to hear from anyone that was there around the same period i was, especially any of the gun bunnies.

Great site. Was in Darby 1981-1983. Sounds like many changes. I loved Germany! Did not know the small base was closed. I probably would not recognize Furth. I did not see or experiance any crime around the base. However there was an officer thrown out a window in a locker and killed.I miss most the great markets downtown. It was a happy time and place in my youth.Hope to see it all again someday when time allows.

James Urban:
I remember that night when the staff duty officer tried to walk the cat walk and someone or the room was full of drug smoked and loud music when the officer was thrown out. after the the bn Commander stated he died, some of the unit called he "SPIDERMAN" and they never found out. ever since then the unit marked the windows with the room numbers and btry floor. I was in the 1st bn 94th F.A. I still miss the Chicago Club and the bier and the food from the pizzeria next to the Chicago club.

I was station at O'Darby Kaserne from 1975 - 1978. I was with the 569th Personnel and then called the Nuremburg Regional Personnel Center. Funny thing is I went to Germany as a 11C and was put to work in personnel. At the time they needed clerks and not ground pounders.

I too had a great time - well mostly. ON July 3, 1975 (Our Bicentennial) I was sitting in the Rec center, it was a warm night, and I was restless. I decided to take a walk. I ended up walking along the raised canal near Merrill Barracks when I was approach by two GIs and they mugged me. Too make things worst, as they were leaving they threw a large steel ball bearing at me and hit me in the forehead. This crack my skull and I then had the pleasure of spending 6 weeks in the hospital. There they clean out the broken bone and let me heal with a "hole" in my head for about 6 months until they could fill it up with some sort of plastic. Oh well it could have been worse.... I then rotated back to the states and eventually had another tour in Heidelberg at HQ. I enjoyed my time there also. Sometimes I get the places and faces mixed up from Nuremburg and Heidelberg. :)

Doug Schnider:
Sorry to hear about your mugging episode. I was stationed at Merrell with the 569th from Oct 72 until April 74. You definitly didn't walk around, both inside and outside the barracks, without looking over your shoulder. Lots of muggings, knifings and robberies.
So, what ever happened to the 569th? Did it move to Darby?
I have returned to Nuremberg the last few springs, and always take a few strolls past the Merrell Kaserne. Mostly good memories, though very strange not to see thousands of GI's running amok through the city.
Later

Doug Schnider

Curtis Riley:
Sorry to hear that you got mugged.
I was with the 569th PSC from feb 1973 to Aug 1975. In jan 1975 the 569yh moved from Merrell Barrack to W O Darby Kaserne. I'm trying to remember you, but need more info. I worked in outprocessing most ot the time. Some of the othe guys there wer Ron Elliott, a white guy everybody called "Redbone", Mike Way, Roger Swanke, and a bunch of WAC's. give a shout back.

David Santoro:
Curtis Riley - I don't recall you but I do recall a guy called Redbone- was he always snapping his fingers? I initially working the the records repository then worked in the customer server area. I was a Spec 4 and then made SGT - Not a spec 5 because I actually had a 11C (infantry) MOS. I roomed with Ron Ryan.

Hello, I found this website in the guestbook nuernberger news, I grew up across from Darby in Fuerth across from 1/94th, in the 70´s, got married to a soldier went back to germany just didn´t went well :-( worked for Quartermaster Laundry from 81-85. I live in the same area again and see the changes here. I hear a lot of Germans say it was I lot better when the Americans were still here. Darby has changed a lot, 1st Trans is a an appartment complex also 1/94th the former Gym is called Grüne Halle (green Hall). There is a Café, lots of fruit and vegetables,Sushi bar a bakery and also cultural events. Behind the former gym is big park, with playgrounds , next to the gym a Kindergarden. The bookstore, the little snackbar and the recreation Center is now a Moschee and meetingplace for the moslems. The church is still a church. No bowling anymore, there are houses now. And the 49er is still empty.........lot more has changed. Greetings from Germany

Sabine

James Urban:
I'm deeply sore about the 1/94F.A. is no longer there, and the bowling alley, and the whole Kaserne had change, I was assigned to Hq btry 1/94th from 1976-1983, I wonder if the bar called rosita's is still owened
by a rosa form spain, i can't remember where it's location all I know it by the tracks and it serve spanish food.Do you remember the pizzeria next to the Chicago club the man sang like Dean Martin. I was looking for some army buddies named Robert Townsend, Michael Herndandez. I also remember two german women from the chicago club that they work there, monica, susan and bobby

James Urban:
I'm deeply sorry that the Darby Kaserne had change I was with Hq btry 1/94th F.A.with the bowling alley and rec center,I miss the Chicago club and the pizzeria next door don't remember the name of that wonderful place all I remember is the owner look and sang like Dean Martin "Thats Sammora" and the tastful CALAZONES. The bar called Rosita's near the tracks but I don't recall the street, the owner was from Spain called rosa. The people I remember was from the Chicago club was bobby the owner, monica, and susan the bartenders. I'm looking for my army buddies named robert townsend, Michael Hersndez, from Hq 1/94F.A. from the years 1976-1978. and two women one is lydia she went to rosita's but don't know her Last name, she was married to a soldier from Ft.Riley Ks.and the other female was disable she walked with her legs almost together and she was not very tall. I grew up in Furth. Used to go to school
across the street from William Odarby.
On the way to the street car after school on Flossau Str. passed the main gate, there was a corner building, maybe an E.M. club with a lot of GI's
hanging around. We used to try out our
school English on them. They in turn wanted to learn some German phrases to pick up girls. We had a good time with them. That was in the early 50's.
I came to the States in '55 and was drafted in June '60. Unfortunately I didn't get to go to Germany. Spent my
whole tour of duty in Ft. Dix in the MP's. Glad to have found this site.

Hi Guys,
it's great for me to find those pages.
I was looking in Yahoo for a possibility to find an old american friend, who was stationed at Herzobase around 1970. His name is John Lightcap and he was coming from Philadelphia.Latest address, we have is from Feasterville, PA. We had a pretty good time together and unfortunatelly we lost contact. During xmas-time we found an old addressbook...but I'm sure he moved several times. Anybody has an idea how to find out addresses of former army people from Germany? Best regards from Erlangen, Dietmar.

Eddie:
Go to www.military.com and use their search for military people.

Usually there will be several names come up. Check out the ones from the state he comes from.

Nicki Metts:
I've located 20 guys from my dad's unit, 24th Engineering 1961-64, using switchboard.com
with a name like "lightcap" there can't be to many. You'll be very surprised at how helpful people are.

Went to High School there, Dad was military mom was German. Hung out at the 49er Club on base and the Superfly and 25 Club downtown. I lived in Erlangen. Worked at the hospital through a school program. Sometimes went to the hospital club. Does anybody remember LouAnn & Rufus? I heard Ronnie Holmes that went to school with me played for the Denver Broncos. I think James Brooks also went on to play pro ball. If anybody lived in Erlangen during 1977-1981 I should know them. Great web site by the way.

Hi!
I was stationed at W.O.D.K. 1974 to 1977, with A Company, 793rd Military Police Battalion, was the Operations Sergeant and lived in Kalb Housing Area, my children attended the American Schools at Nurnberg. I really enjoyed this assignment and would not hestiate to return to see all the sights in the Nurnberg/Furth area. If anyone knows me, feel free to contact me via e-mail. The only pictures I have of that area is movies, super 8 with sound. I attended Embry-Riddle college avaition courses at Monteith Barracks Education Center also. I'am a license commerical pilot, SEL , rating and love to fly.. I retired from the Army in 1978 and moved to Florida and I have been here since.

Kathy Stroud Sherrill:
Hi. I sure you would most likely remember my father also in the 793rd. He is John Stroud and is living in Tx.

Hello from Erlangen!

My name is Martin Seeliger. I live in Erlangen since 1973, and i was born in hospital in Erlangen.

My story: I was adopted from a german woman who can´t get children.
From my first time, she told me this story, my mother was married in Herogenaurach and came
from cech-republik, she was a ballett-dancer. My father was a soldier (her lover) and he worked at Herzobase or in
Erlangen at Ferries Barracks in the year 1972. He must be from Puerto-Rico !And i´m the product from this love.

I was born on 17.02.1973.

Please, help me, when you can give me some informations about my father.

Good luck for the next year,
i hope i read from you,
tanks,

Martin Seeliger

:-) I just found this website through an entry in the NBG guestbook.
I (German) worked at W.O.Darby in Fuerth from 1969-1970 (August)then Brigitte McCurry. moved to Oberammergau. My husband was with the MP's. I worked at the HQ's and Transportation. Then I worked again in the 70"s, 80"s in Housing,Transportation and Engineering.
I am looking for old co-workers who worked with me. Former Lilo Kisskalt fr. Nbg. worked@ Transp. then at Merrell. Karin, we worked together at Transportation, she was from the Wuerzburg area. A co Worker I worked with at Nbg HQ's who now lives in New York?? Another co worker, Linda,Ilse, who worked with me at Personnel.I tried the Nbg GB, no response. maybe I have luck this time. Sure would be nice if I could find someone.
I do miss Fuerth and it was terrible when I drove thru the whole area after it was closed.
Well, Hello to everyone and if you think you might know me, please write.

I lived at the American Bavarian Hotel (I think thats what it was called) Used to run to the train, jump off in Erlangen and run to the barracks for formation. I ran because I was in my uniform, and had a couple of locals lecture me about how evil my country was, etc, someone translated for me of course....My reply was...this is my job, I work, I spend my money here, and someday I will leave, hopefully with happy memories. I spent all my money mostly on beer and food.

Was stationed at the Nürnberg Hospital. Sorry I don't have any photos I could send, but glad to see the hospital page including in the website. I noticed there is a guest book for each kaserne on the site plus this guest book for the entire website.

Nice Move.

Glad to see a this website coming on the internet. I bet before to long it's going to take off and be one big site. Was stationed in the Nurnberg area a few years ago. Not many websites on the net about the area since they closed all the kasernes in that area. I've ran across a couple of them, like the Ferris Barracks site. When I seen that site, I said to myself, "wish we had a place like that to visit".

Lets get busy and support this site. It could turn out to be something pretty damn good.

I spent a lot of time in the Fürth Main PX. I wasn't stationed in the area around Nürnberg, but I hopped a train and went to the PX there a couple times a month. Loved to go the sound shop there. The small PX were I was stationed didn't have much.

Most of the married guys here went a few times a month to the Main Conversary there for groceries. Sometimes I could get a ride with them.

Great to find this Nürnberg Military Area Guestbook and the message board.
