Hey Chris. I was 3 years behind you in 240 S&S AK Platoon.
Worked at Johnson in the lumber yard. One time I was

crate sitting outside. Not good. Full bird flew in wanting
answers. It was only my first month there. Oh what fun we

I was with 240th S$S Co. 1986-1988. Some of the best times of my
life. Discovered my favorite German beer at Achillies.
Heffe-Viezen dark. Yum. Remember the place? Then got pizza from
Shami's. LOL They were on post by the front gate. I used to take
the U-bon downtown Nurnberg to some of the clubs like the Green
Goose. I can still hear the conductor announce some of the
streets. Also went to Monsters of Rock at Hitlers Stadium.
Didn't they call it Duece n Dykes? My best friends there were
Terry Deathrage E-5, Pete Raucht E-4, Henry Wilmarth E-4, Loran
Lassuy E-4, Traci Jenkins E-3, There's so many others, I wish I

you know we had 2000 of those 8" nucs in Germany. could have
taken care of a lot of the problems we are having today.

Hey Guys,
I was stationed at W O Darby Kaserne years 1979,and 1980. I was
part of the 1st Armoured Division, 595th Military Police
Company. We did not do any Kaserne duty, strictly off site
duties. We were attached to a Lance Missle Unit out of Greece. I
enjoyed my time there very much, and just recently learned it
had closed several years back. That is too bad, my fondest
memory is of eating at the Pizzeria across the street from the
Main Gate. I put away many a meal in that place.
Hank Dodson:
Hello Terry, noticed you were from Broken Arrow, ok, Was
thru there a couple of years ago visiting my Cousin there.
Played a round of golf at the Battle Creek golf course, love
that area, Spent 8 years at Darby also. take care

I was at WODK from 1974 through 1976 with Co A 793rd MP Bn. I
was a former 11B who had become a 95B. It was a great
assignment. I must admit, I was a bit of hell raiser both off
duty and on duty. Fuerth and Nurnberg both great cities that
offered a 20 year old plenty of things to do! I look back at
that time as some of the greatest times I ever had....maybe a
few bad moments but I really don't remember them....

Hallo all, we need your support please!
My sister, Joen born in 1965, and me, Mark born in 1969 from
Germany / Fürth-Nürnberg, we are looking for any informations
about our Dad’s. When we were children, our mother told us only
the best about our Dad’s, but nothing concretly. We know that
she loved our Dad’s very strong, she never had another love all
her life. To talk about this was very painful for her, so we
stopped to ask since we were very young. Our wonderful mother,
Lisa, died last year. God bless her!
Now, we need your help!
Our Dad’s Name are:
Oliver Barry Flash and David Johnson, they was stationed at
William-O. Darby Kaserne from 1964 to 1972. We would like to
have any information what happened and if they died in Vietnam.
Do anybody know something, or someone who was stationed at this
time?
Can you give us information which US-office we can asked for?
We hope to get any answers and thank you all for your
understanding.
God bless you all.

It would help if you knew what unit they were in. Try
www.militarylocator.com or whitepages.com. |
Mark Hübsch:
Hello John LaHoud,
thanks a lot for your comment. We 'll try that immediatly!
I'm sorry, but we don't know the unit. If you, or anyone
else, have further informations and ideas, you also can
e-mail us thouhg regulär e-mail(arcor.de)instead through the
guessbook, because it's maybe not allowed here to write more
comments.
Sorry, but the other Dad's name is David Jackson, not David
Johnson, thanks!
Wish you all the best, Joen+Mark

Hi Joen and Mark,
My condolences on the passing of your Mom, God rest her
soul. I was stationed at Monteith (Atzenhof) in 1972 so I
didn’t know either of your Dads but I did check at the
Vietnam Memorial Website and they are not listed among our
fallen heroes. Good luck to both of you. |
Joen + Mark:
thanks a lot, philip, for your very friendly words and
helpfully activity. We think, we should contact the us army
about ansbach/germany. Do you, or anyone else, has
expierience to that? Or how do you think, if it is possible
to get informations from the us army about our search?
We wish you always the best, Joen + Mark |

Joen and mark I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your

assisting me in locating friends from my unit, on darby

I thought I had signed this guest book before. I served at WOD
from August 1960 to April 1963 with the 24th combat engineers.
Also part of my time was at Johnson. We were in S/4 supply over
at Darby. We spent most of our time in the field. I will never
forget Winter shield 2 from October 1960 to Late December 1960
we were in the field and moved every night,a lot of fun!! I had
a lot of friends and would like to go back some day. I woulkd
like to tell Alvin hello, we meet on the web he was in the 95th
about the same time.
Hank Dodson:
I want to say hello to Alvin also. We were together at the
95th, ages ago.

I was an army brat who drank cokes & hung out at the snack bar
at the O'Darby Kaserne in the late 1950's, went to Nurnberg
High. I thought I knew too much about the Army so ended up going
in the Navy for a career. Germany was a good place to grow up in
the late 50's.

I was at Darby March 73 - 76 assigned to HQ USMCA Nbg, worked in
the Consolidated Maint Fac Fuerth, COMMEL section. Our shop
repaired everything electronic. The rest of the foaciity took
care of commercial trucks and cars, typewriters ETC. My wife
worked in the Darby PX for about a year until our son was born
in Jan 75. Loved it there and always wanted to get back. Sorry
to see that it's gone. We lived in leased housing for about a
year and a half on Zirndofer Str.

Anyone there winter of '82-'83? I was a student on the economy
and got hooked up with the Stage 13 theater and orchestra.
Played the part of the Ghost of Christmas Past in that year's
production of A Christmas Carol. Made lots of friends but kept
in touch with none of them. I remember Art & CA Crane, hung out
with Kevin Crawford (Merrill Barracks), Bob Critchley (British
ex-pat), and a guy named Doug (Last???) who always had funny
stories about falling asleep at a red light. Wonder where
everyone is these days!

the time. If you used a vehicle there you talked to me.
John LaHoud:
I drove for Col.Besicka and Col. Cohen in the MP barracks. I
remember getting the "new" 1967 Chevies to drive. They were
a hoot on the autobahn with the V-8's. You guys took really
good care of all our patrol vehicles, and I thank you. Too

I was at Darby from May of 1970 to October 1971 with Signal
Operations Company - next to the the microwave tower. I worked
in the comunications center. While we pulled long 12 hour
shifts, it was always great on our off days to walk through
Furth or catch the stretcar to downtown Nurnberg. Especially
during one of the endless Fests. I miss those days now and wish
I could have them back. That's why I'm glad I found this site.

Hello all! This is a great website and brings back a lot of
memories. I was stationed at Darby Kaserne from '92 until '94. I
was stationed with a small unit named MCT Nurnberg across the
parking lot from 501st Finance. The parent company of which was
based out of Weisbaden. I hung out with some folks from 501st
Finance, in particular Virginia Thee. I am looking to get in
contact with Jason Futrell, Kevin J. Lipke, Kevin Junnarkar, and
Chuck Day. I was also good friends with an MP named Steve
Saunders (if you knew him, it is definitely hard to forget him).
I lived in Bldg 41 on the top floor. What a view from the
windows in that building. That was my first assignment for the
Army and the best assignment any soldier can have. I had a
phenomenal experience there and would love to go back one day to
do some reminiscing. If anyone remembers me, or not, hit me up
via email. Hope you are well. Cheers!!!

I was assigned to the 127th AG Det Postal from Jan73-Jan75 at
William O Darby Kaserne we were billeted across from Hq's my
room was on the second floor. The MP's were also in the same
building with us, our BPO was at Johnson Barracks, where we
would receive and distribute mail. I had a number of jobs
including unloading parcel post and bulk mail and sorting to the
outline units, and the insured room. I also had a courier job
where I would use 1st Trans as drivers and we would take a 40
foot container full of mail to Offenbach and bring one back, I
also was on the Munich mail run as well as Amberg, Hohenfiels.
During my last year I was assigned to the Furth Exchange and
worked at the post office. My wife arrived in April 73 and
stayed until april 75, our first apt was in Oberasbach, no gas
stove but we had briquettes and coal for the water heater, soon
moved to 51 Barenshanz Str. My wifes name was Cris, we would
always have short timer partys at our place, there was also a
number of MP's that lived there. My son was born at the Nurnberg
Army Hospital in Oct 74.
I sure miss 1/2 chicken with pomme fritz, and a bottle of tucher

Greetings, or as the amiable, “Southern Bell” wife of one of the
staff sergeant’s use to say: “Guten Tag, Ya’ll !”. I was a SP5
with the 182nd LEM, Signal Platoon, 303rd Maintenance Battalion.
My nickname was “Chris”, and I was stationed at William O. Darby
Kaserne from 1969 to 1970. At some point during 1970, the 182nd
LEM moved into Merrell Barracks. I frequented Ziggy’s gasthaus
(east of WODK), drank my fill of Gruner Bier, and deposited more
than my fair share of Deutsche Marks in Ziggy’s foosball
machine. I was a member of the soccer team, the Hedgehogs, and
we played the Germans on Saturday afternoons. Although we lost
every game, the “after-the-game-beers” helped console the
unending, humiliation of defeat. However, all things considered,
I had a good time in Germany. My one regret was not becoming
more fluent in German.

communicate here.
thanks, Hank
Eddie:
The other one is not a site. It's a group you have to join
for anything on it to work. Only works for members.
|
Hank:
Eddie, I joined, still confusing. Have to be a member of a
group. I want to hear from everyone that was there. Find all
comments interesting about a place I spent 9 years.

There is only one site. The multiply part is a group you
have to join for most of the pages to be available to you.
You can add photos, add to the notes, add to the blog and

I was at WODK between Jun 66 and Jan 3rd. 68. Started in supply
of Co.A, 793rd. and finished my tour at 2nd. MP Grp. I was a
SP/4 when I was discharged. My supply Sgt. ( E-7 ) was Bill
Watson, Cpt. McCotter was the CO. If anyone would remember, I
had a bootleg AM broadcast station on the air and would play
everyones reel to reel tapes for continious music all over the
WODK. I had a wire antenna across the far ends of our "L" shape
building right at the main entrance to the Kasern. Very good
times at Gerhart's Guest Haus. It's been more than 40 years now
but it seems like it was only a short time ago. I would like to
take a trip back to Furth and visit the area. Don't know if I
will get to do that at my age now. It was really a great place
for a draftee to spend my time in the service. I went to Germany
and my brother went to Nam. Thank god he came back OK. I really
hate to see the old Kasern gone, but time marches on as they
say. Best regards and Happy New Year.

out drinking at various spots, stopped and got a half chicken

Was stationed at W.O.Darby Kas. from 1978-1992 with 1st
Transportation Company...better known as "First Truck". Have
some great memories of the place and the surrounding community.
Loved going to the Texas Bar on the corner just behind the old
snack bar. It seems that I always had to stop on the walk back
to the kaserne from the Texas Bar at the little Imbis and get
either a half chicken or a snitzel sandwich to take back to the
barracks most of the time it ended up on my desk and never
eaten...the good ole days. Such memories.
Richard Aid:
Small world, you live in Scottsboro and I am in Huntsville.
I was on Darby from 93-95 in 501st Finance. A lot of the
places that I see talked about on here didn't even exist

leave before it shut down. Had fun there. |

Just read your comment and yes I grew up in Scottsboro and

By the time I PCS'd there were maybe 300-400 soldiers left. It
got to where they were moving single soldiers into family

year. It was great! Anyone remember Murdock, Hudnall, etc. who

I was with the 127th AG Det (Postal)from Jan 1973, to Jan 1975.
I also had many jobs including unloading bulk mail, sorting mail
at Johnson Barracks which was the Base Post Office, working at
the Furth exchange post office, I was very fond of being a
courier, I also had the route from Nurnberg/Furth to Offenbach
and Rhein Main, then back to Nurnberg, I also had the Amnberg
Hohnefiels, Graffonweir, and Munich mail routes, it gave me an
oportunity to see the country, we would change routes if you got
tired of going to Frankfurt we would change to Munich,
especially during Octoberfest, we also would stay with friends
that worked at the BPO in Munich at the Mcgraw Kasern there
billetts were apartments in the city. We would utilize 1st Trans
drivers, sign a manifest check out a .45 and hit the road, drop
off a load and pick up a load. Enjoyed the drive to Amberg &
Hohnefiels as well along the river, especially in fall. We lived
in Bldg. 41 but I also had apartment in Oberasbach, and later in

I like this one. Retired Army Msgt flys into France and is ask
for his passport. Says he has none. Immigration says you must
have a passport to enter France. Army Msgt says the last time I
came here I didn't need a passport. Immigration says that's
impossible. Army Msgt says. " Back at Normandy, when we landed
at Omaha beach there wasn't a frenchman around to show our
passport too. How soon they forget.

one painted a 1977 Olds for me in a light blue metallic at
Pinder Bks back in about 1985 so before your time. turned
out great. bought the car for $200, painted it and sold it
for $1000. Loved those craft shops over there that were
available.

Anyone from HHB 1/94th FA around 1982-1983? I was sent back to

Chickens hanging in the window. I used to love their Curry

After the fact: I was working for ITT Federal Services Int'l
Corp at the communications tower on W. O. Darby Kaserne
(1998-2001). Although I was never stationed in the Nürnberg
area, I could still sense what was once a great military
community by the scenery and the comments of former soldiers who
live in Fürth/Nürnberg area. I was stationed in Bad Kreuznach
and never got a chance to visit the Nürnberg Miltary Community
while it was still active. Damn!!!

I was stationed there in 1970 with the 43rd mp detachment. Had
many good times and played on the softball team. We had an
excellent team and beat all comers. Bob Fischbach was our
pitcher and was at the top of his game. There was an excellent
bunch of GIs that played blues at the NCO club; wish I could
remember what they called themselves. They sure were good. Also
served with the 51 mp detachment (dachau) and 532 mp company (ft

I was stationed at Darby from March or so of '64 through August
of '66. I worked in the Special Services office with Bob Meadows
(civilian drector), Bill Nua and Capt. Freddie Gee. I lived in
Headquarters Company barracks. One guy I remember and have
always wondered what became of him was Bill Sollers. Myself and
Jim Yester (he was stationed at Illesheim and became part of The
Association when he got out) had a singing duo: "Jim and Henry",
catchy, eh?
After he rotated I hooked up with a couple other guys (Dan
Bellack, lived at Darby but was the postmaster at Herzo and Don
Johnson, stationed at Herzo) we did a lot of shows in the
Service Clubs in that area and did a few things on AFN Nurnberg.
We still stay is touch. Great times for sure!!!

My husband, RC Kremer, was stationed at Darby Kaserne from
1986-1993, he was with the 793rd MP Co. I worked at the Fürth
Commissary from 1986 - 1993. I am looking for Mike Speelman or
Duane and Judy Sanford. Anybody out there can help me it would
be greatly appreciated. We went back to Fürth in September of
2005 and nothing is the same. There is no Darby Kaserne!! The
building have been turned into lavish apartments, the gym is now
full of little booths selling anything from clothes to beer and
wine. Lots of food vendors. It is amazing what a transformation
the city of Fürth have done! It is also very sad, we had a lot
of good times there and will forever remember the people from
there.
Kelly Kremer:
Sorry I meant 615th MP Co not 793rd!! Too many different
units!

Favorite gasthaus was Ziggy’s, a block east of WODK on
Balbierestrasse, owned by a Polish family named Deska, Ziggy &

served Gruner Bier. Ate Ta Ta’s ( raw meat and onions on bread)
and snitzel mit prommes-frites. Wed. was rations night, so
always ate at Ziggy’s. Played foosball - (Hanson was best). Only
customers were Signal Plt. guys and comrade in those days. We’d
buy a case of Gruner and put it on the floor under the table
when we invited a rookie in for the first time. Ziggy opened
just for us GI’s on Christmas Eve in ‘68. Also went to Martha’s

For all who used to go to the EM/NCO/OFFICERS Clubs:
My two bands ("Six Pack" and "Gordy Thomas and CREW") used to
play all around Southern Bavaria.
I've written a lot of songs since then, and anyone is welcome to
download the free .mp3 files listed on my site at
gordythomas.com please disregard the fact that there are also
song files for sale on the page, as it is not my intent to get
you to buy anything. I just thought some of the FOB (Friends of
The Bands) might be interested in hearing what I've been doing
in Nashville.
And to all combat veterans, "Welcome Home!"

Jim, thanks for the pics. Others stationed with my step-father
included George Stacey, Butch Briggs, "Steve" Stephens, Bill
Gertz. We lived in quarters across from NAHS at 44 John F.
Kennedy Strasse. I went to NAHS as did my older brother, Ron
Rich. My younger brother, Mark was in elementary school. I
remember that the school had a dental clinic. We used to walk to
WODK and go to the snack bar. I enjoyed walking around
Fuerth...I only wish I had a camera then. Anyone who remembers
these people, give me a shout.
Jim Perrine:
Rich, I served with Bill Gertz in the 532 mp co at fort dix
n.j. and at Dachau. He was from Portland, Oregon. He was a
good man to have your back. He never ran like some would do.
There is a Randy Frye in Iola, Wisconsin that is the right
age. Don't know if it is the right one. Go to
whitepages.com. I have used it to track down a lot of
people. I also spent a lot of time in the snack bar. Many of
my meals came from their, the rod and gun club or Alfonsos.

I was station at Johnson Barracks from 1960 to 1963 HQ&HQ co
24th combat ENG. I was assigned to S/4 and lived at W.O. Darby.
But i forget what BLD. I know the main st. was right out side
our bld. I remember the Stockade close to the gate 3 of my
friends were in there. and a theater close by, I think on the
way to Johnson Barracks. I also remember a beer drinking place
right close to out bld and throught a hole in the fence. ha That
was a long time ago. I have some pictures I took back then, I
will try to up load them. Good old field days ha. I will never
forget winter shield II.
Hank Dodson:
Looking forward to your pictures. I was there 61-63 so we
overlapped quite a bit. 95th QM had maint shops on Johnson
Bks. The theater would be close to the main gate, nearthe
High School, on the way to Johnson Bks. If you haven't been

Checking if this is working before I type long entry.
HANK DODSON:
Now that it's working just wanted to see if any one
remembers the troop ships that took us to Germany. SIMON
BUCKNER AND MAURICE ROSE were the two that I crossed on. 9
day luxury liners to Bremerhaven and back. Some memories. KP
all the way over as a Private. One day the Chief of the
galley said ok guys it is 5 minutes till 1 and you can go on
deck till 2 pm and enjoy your selves. we no sooner got on
deck and a voice came over the intercom, we are crossing an
international date line, it is now 2 PM, KPs return to the
galley. Such memories.
|
Alvin Crispin:
Do I remember! I was not a big sea person. I remember
feeling a little sea sick after hitting the English Channel
& as I was walking down the stairs to the mess hall, I was
getting this terrible food smell coming up from below & I
saw these garbage cans below; UGH! |
Bob McEvoy:
Went over in'52 on the Stewart and returned in'54 on the
Hinzelman.Stopped in Iceland to drop off flyboys. The North
Sea makes the Atlantic feel like a pond.Really rough.
|
HANK DODSON:
Ya, we couldn't go on deck at night. The north Atlantic was
so rough in 61 that we had to detour around Scottland and if
you would have gone up on deck you would have been washed
overboard. I didn't get sick because working in the galley,
KP, the old Chief had all the KPs eat first and I managed to
not get sick. And the military train sitting on the dock
along side the ship when we docked in Bremerhaven to take us
to our duty stations. My first train ride to Furth. I was
met at the train by a LTC, his driver, a SGM and a Cpt
because they had received a twix that a new man was coming
to the 95th QM Battalion HQ and I think they were
disappointed to find it was a PVT, mechanic to work in the
Motor Pool. IT was nice to have such a reception. Those were
some of the best years in my life. |

I was stationed in Karlsruhe but was TDY for 6 months in Fürth
at Darby Kaserne while we built an Army dental clinic. We stayed
in an Air Defense Artillery barracks while there. I was the
backhoe operator on the project. I was wondering if anyone had
pictures with the dental clinic in them. The dental clinic was a
metal building. It was built in 1980. I never got to see the
finished project. We drank way too many Tucher beers one night
and thought it would be funny to toss a couch out of a top floor
window of the barracks. Not so funny..we got booted out of
Nurnberg and sent back to our unit in Karlsruhe...

Hi there,
anyone here who served (or possiply serves) with Spc Richard
(Rick)L Teske / 223rd MtCo. between ´93/´94? He lived in the
first building at gate 6, 2nd floor.
Met him first at a field excercice at the Tennelohe Training
Area and a lot more times in the Darby. Was a cheerful guy, hope
to find out how he´s doing...
And to the Vets: Yes, Darby has changed... Sadly, in my opinion,
not in all positive ways...
I miss the US Soldiers here in Fuerth, thy had manners and
showed respect, those who live there now, lack those skills!

Walter

I was there at Darby from 9-52 to 2-54.I definitely rember
the PX[shopping center] and the theater. The pub that I
remember was across from bldg#41 and the GYO [German Youth
Orig] bldg.We called it Ma's.Sorry to say I forgot the name
of the street & most everything else. |
Eddie:
I was over in Fürth during the month of April for a visit.
The place doesn't look anywhere near what it used too. Every
time the wife and I go over to visit her relatives in the
Bamberg area, we always hit the Nürnberg area at least half
a dozen times while there.
This year we made it to the Easter Market a couple of times
downtown Nürnberg and also made it to the Volksfest out by
Merrell Barracks.
Always enjoy our time over there. The wife really looks
foward to it every year. |

Great times, great fun and great food.
Anyone out there from the 3808 during that period. Looking for
R. Petrie or Peter Muta.
Robert L. Strickland, Va:
I was a Sp-5 attached to 3808 sig svc from Dec 1960 thru Nov
1962. Then transferred to Munich 3808 Sig Svc until Nov of
1964. I remember Petrie but don't know how to contact him.
Frau Kirchbach was the secetary. I think Franz Dumhardt was
the senior German tech. I ran around with Sp-3 Lehman
Sanders. Oh yeah, not to forget Sgt. Harold T. Brumbaugh and
all the rest whose names I can't recall.
I finally retired from the Navy in 1987. e-mail

I also was with the 127th AG Det (Postal)from Jan 1973, to
Jan 1975. I also had many jobs including unloading bulk
mail, sorting mail at Johnson Barracks which was the Base
Post Office, working at the Furth exchange post office, I
was very fond of being a courier, I also had the route from
Nurnberg/Furth to Offenbach and Rhein Main, then back to
Nurnberg, I also had the Amnberg Hohnefiels, Graffonweir,
and Munich mail routes, it gave me an oportunity to see the
country, we would change routes if you got tired of going to
Frankfurt we would change to Munich, especially during
Octoberfest, we also would stay with friends that worked at
the BPO in Munich at the Mcgraw Kasern there billetts were
apartments in the city. We would utilize 1st Trans drivers,
sign a manifest check out a .45 and hit the road, drop off a
load and pick up a load. Enjoyed the drive to Amberg &
Hohnefiels as well along the river, especially in fall. We
lived in Bldg. 41 but I also had apartment in Oberasbach,
and later in Nurnburg. I hope to visit in 2007

Been here before, just doing some thinking. Was in Furth from
76-79, and was wondering how many remember these people and
places?
Cadillac Man- told all new GI's he was their friend, then he
ripped em off selling some junk clothes for a store he worked.
Fat ol black guy, drove a caddy, where his name came from.Hung
around by the shopping center.
Sgt. Greene- ran the gym, another fat ol black guy, used to kid
with him about certain sexual habits he had (and wouldn't do).A
funny fuck.
Walter Shoppe- store near WOD that sold junk, owned by an old
man and his wife.
Abraham's- pizza/sandwich place, next to Chicago club. Never
figured out if it was the best pizza around or the worst. It was
just convenient.
Chicago club- what a dive, nuff said.
Anything I missed?
R Snider:
You missed the Grun Laube best fun in Furth down the street
from East Entrance. |
Lorenzo r. Strickland:
I guess everyone knew Cadillac, sadly though,he passed away

From July 1971 to January 1973 was apart of signal corp in
Nurnberg Germany. I worked in this large metal vault which had
no windows and to enter into the large vault you had to know the
combination number - like a safe. I don't remember all the
particulars like company, unit ect but do have that information
and will list it later. I live on the William O Darby Karserne
in a recently renovated barracks on the fifth floor. Most of the
personnel living on the other floors were Military Police. I
recalled a friend get me a pair of stereo speakers when he
couldn't pay me back for money I had loan him. Because a lot of
theft was going on where I lived I left my speakers with two
miliary police I had met. I didn't know them very well but
because they were Police I figured the speakers would be safe.
When I returned about two weeks later to retrieve my speakers -
the two MP's I had met had disappeared and so to did my stereo
speakers. There were many funny events like that but the other
have to do with smoking hash which wasn't something the MP's
should have been engaged in.
Jason:
Hi, you probably arent going to believe this but, my dad was
the one that stole your speakers.... I was born in nurnberg
in 1973....my dad was a m.p who lives in the darby barracks.
I have been told the story of the speakers.
|
Sp/4 Steve Aguilar:
Who was your dad, I also lived in the barracks with the MP's
but we were in the postal unit 127th AG Det, I had many
friends that were MP's ask him If he knew Steve Aguilar in
the postal unit. Thanks

Michigan and Andrew is a 1st LT in the Army, currently
stationed at Ft. Cambell, KY. Has anybody been able to
locate Dave Mackey? He was a tall gangley kid that worked
down in the basement of our office building shoveling coal
for the furnace. He always emerged at the end of the day
looking like he came out of the mines. When I left the 511th

anybody from that era at the 511th is still around. Our small

motorpool was run by a German man named Fleischmann, whom we
called "the colonel," because he seemed to run the whole place.

Spec4 with the Signal Company at WODK, working 12 hour shifts in
the windowless state-of-the-art (at that time) DSTE comm center,
near the microwave tower. I got my daily exercise by walking up
the five flights of stairs to the billets in building 41! This
was in 1972-73. Previously spent one year in Grafenwohr at a
very slow (I could have almost wrote the messages in long hand
faster) "comm center". Was driving my '59 VW beatle one day out
of Graf on a twisty narrow road with three gi buddies, checking
out the castles in the country side, and taking pictures with my
brand new Canon FTb camera, when we came upon a sign: "US Forces
Personnel HALT. One Kilometer to Czechoslovakia" The road was in
a thick forest, narrow, but paved, so we continued forward
looking for a place to turn around. After going around three or
four more curves we decided the next curve could be the
czec-point (pun intended). I made a quick K turn and we got the
hell out-of-there! But, stopped to take a picture of the warning
sign! Adventures every day in "West" Germany. Enjoyed the
beautiful county, State of Bavaria, Black Forest, driving the
Autobahn (no speed limit at that time) in the CO's green Pontiac
sedan (read ZOOOOOOM here!) and, oh yeh, the "smoke". Best
reguards to all who remember their tour at Darby.

Worked as a civilian in Housing/Warehouse Supplies (Mr.
Stiller)/Signal Unit (Lt. Polvere, Sgt. Paul Mueller, Msgt.
Moran)
1966 to 68 WOD Kaserne. Any of these names ring a bell - if so
would love to hear from you.
Ron Kantola:
Marion,
I was a member of the Signal Service Unit - Nurnberg, as it
was called when I arrived in April of 1964. It was later
incorporated into the Nurnberg Equipment Maintenance Center
sometime in 1965.
I sure do remember Mr. Stiller, as well as Hans Dumhard,
Herr Stern, and Herr Hafke to name a few. I was there until
the middle of June, 1966, when I was sent back to the
states, namely North Chicago, Illinois. I now live in the
city just north of there in Waukegan.
As for the military personnel, there are too many names to
mention, but Paul Mueller was one of the guys who I was very
close to. A few of us from the signal unit would be invited
to have dinner and visit with his family on a regular basis
at his home in the military housing quarters. That took a
bit of squeezing in around the table, considering the size
of his family. I still have a picture of him and his wife
and kids. I unfortunately lost track of him over the years,
but would love to see him and the family again. Some of the
names you may recognize are Sgt. Larry Sloan, another close
friend, Russell Tarbox, and Bernie Yokopenic, who I met out
in Pa. a couple of years ago.
I'm at a temporary e-mail address, so I may not be able to
respond for a while, but I'll eventually get around to it.
By the way, where in Wisconsin are you? I'm only 10 miles
from the southern border, right omn Lake Michigan.
Hope to hear from you soon. |

Was at WODK in 1973. We were in the Òsealed buildingÓ between
the MP barracks on the way to the snack bar. If you remember the
large Microwave tower behind the NCO club (49er club), that is
where our little windowless building was located.
We were part of the signal company & worked in a most
interesting classified ÒCommunications CenterÓ. This is where
AUTODIN, AUTOSEVOCOM, & Briefcase DESTE communications took
place. I was one of the Computer repairmen (MOS 34D20K1) & loved
being on duty when Kissinger came to visit his mom & he needed a
secure Whitehouse connection. I enjoyed late night talks with
the German phone operators on the army switchboard, very fast
and police free drives on the autobahn in my 78 Firbird 400,
very good times (off-duty) with the Army's civilian phone
operators and the ladies (wonderful WACs) from the Com center.
Except for the daily conflicts from the assignment of a totally
"Ignorant Ape" as the NCOIC over a COM Center full of bright
computer operators and us computer repairmen/geeks, this was one
of the best duties in the Army. I was transferred to the
Frankfurt com-center in late 73 (I G Farben) where I worked
night shift in the COM center!!! Three of us Supported 3 COM
centers (Frankfurt, Gieson & Oberussel) as computer repairmen
was interesting too! I also enjoyed reading all of the
classified "stuff". The private time away from the I.G. Farben
Bldg. with special British & German friends was great. I
completed my tour in 1974.

Hi to all,
Im looking at some of the Nuremberg Military Community sites
because I happen to live in one of the new houses on
Floessaustrasse (Nr 68, near the chapel).
Although Ive lived in Fuerth for nearly 20 years the WoD was
always a forbidden city which is why its fascinating to see and
read memories and photos of the barracks when it was in use.
Greetings to all who served around here.
Im getting a bit sick of digging your rubble out of my garden
though
e.w.:
hey, i live in nuremberg and have german friends that live
in the floessaustr now, have to check for the house number
but i think it´s exactly the same building. i was actually
just there this morning |

In July 1966 I commanded Btry C of 1/94 Arty. The Bn was then in
Bismarck Kaserne in Schwabisch Gmuend. The Bn pcsd to Darby that
month and I was the train commander for all of our tracks. At
that time the Bn had 3-155mm batteries, all SPs (M109) and one
8-inch battery (M110). Acc to local lore, the area commander was
the individual upon which the The Great Escape was based. The
bldgs we occupied, including the huge, five-story building were
a mess. I was there until Nov. 1966 when I got orders for Nam.
JOHN SCHOONMAKER JRSCHOON:
JUST MISSED YOU. I ARRIVED 2/67 AS "C"XO. CPT.ZITZ WAS CO.
BN CHANGED TO 3 8"BTY WHILE I WAS THERE. |
S. T. Ruffo:
James did I served under you as cheif of section of base
peace in 1966 at Bismarck Kaserne and later in 1967 at
Darby, Furth. By the way was it you that lost or rather
misplaced the brief case of clasified documents for S-2 that
I helped look all over for and we eventually found or was it
someone else, respectfully past sgt. Ruffo. It was a great
time, depending on how you look back on it. |

I was station at O'Darby Kaserne from 1976 - 1978. I was with
the 569th Personnel and then called the Nuremburg Regional
Personnel Center. I too had a great time - well mostly. ON July
3, 1976 (Our Bicentennial) I was sitting in the Rec center, it
was a warm night, and I was restless. I decided to take a walk.
I ended up walking along the raised canal near Merrill Barracks
when I was approach by two GIs and they mugged me. Too make
things worst, as they were leaving they threw a large steel ball
bearing at me and hit me in the forehead. This crack my skull
and I then had the pleasure of spending 6 weeks in the hospital.
There they clean out the broken bone and let me heal with a
"hole" in my head for about 6 months until they could fill it up
with some sort of plastic. Oh well it could have been worse....
I then rotated back to the states and eventually had another
tour in Heidelberg at HQ. I enjoyed my time there also.
Sometimes I get the places and faces mixed up from Nuremburg and
Heidelberg. :)

I was assigned to Co A 793rd. MP Battalion from Nov. 1962
through Oct. 1964. Worked in the dining facility across from
post headquarters. If anybody remembers the evil Cpt Warren P.
Palzer let me know.
Lewis E. Gosa:
My name is Lewis E. Gosa from Alabama. In late l962 and
l963, I served as Battalion Motor Officer and later as
Adjutant and HQ DET Commander. I left the Army to go to law
school at the University of Alabama, and Capt. Palzer came
to Oxford, MS, and attended law school. He visited us in
Tuscaloosa one time. I remember he was from N. Y., and I
recently heard that he is in that state now. Somehow, I
recall he had a twin. I did not know he was evil. Lt-Cols
Cook, Monroe and Brandenburg were Battalion Commanders
during my Oct. l962 to July, l965, tenure.
