Enjoyed my time with the 378th for two years (81-82). Roaming the downtown, U-Bahn, the Top Hat, PC and does anyone remember the Fillmore??? The Terrace club monthly bazaars, hanging out in Kennedy Kaserne!
I was with the 302nd MI Bn back in the basement SCIF when we closed the Abrams building down and moved the battalion to Wiesbaden AAF while our A Company went to Campbell Barracks. I remember all the stuff we threw away and how you could purchase government furniture dirt cheap. I lived across the street in the BEQs… I was stationed in Frankfurt three times… 81-84 (Drake Kaserne and Michael Barracks), 87-90 Maurice Rose Army Heliport, and again 93-96 (Frankfurt Abrams and WAB)… I kinda miss those times………wonder where everyone wound up?
I was also with the 302nd MI Bn in the basement SCIF. From 83-85. Last time I was in Germany the complex looked run down from what I saw. I really miss Germany and the BEER and the FOOD and the PEOPLE.
Is this Sgt Kirby? Well it is LT Moore. I remember you from the days in the SCIF and my time at the 302nd MI with LTC Terry. Hope all is well good to see you on link.
This is SFC Smith (ret) 98C and I need to correct the dates. I was there Sept 83 until June 86. I ran the intel support for the G2 and LTC Setimo(spelling) from 302 MI BN. Two hats!
I was in the 378th PSC from October 1982-October 1985. This was one of my favorite places. I am having a good time over on Facebook with some of these units, bn, Corps, Kaserne (posts) come over and join us. Also there is mil.com (buddy finder). It is always great to remember another place and time. I miss my friends and comrades from those days, some gone forever some just a page away. Don’t wait too long. I miss it.
I spent my last year 1982, in the CMDSA vault down in basement of Abrams complex. We were part of HHC 22nd Sig BDE but I spent time in 32nd and 17th BN(s) over a three year span. I was in the vault at McNair too and we were always looking for secret underground levels based on rumors, most were just rumors but there were a few tunnels in both complexes.
I was stationed in Oberursel from June 1972 to June 1974, having come up from Suttgart the month before. I was a 1st LT Data Processing Plans and Ops Officer. May 11 1972 I drove my 1969 BMW onto the Abrams Complex, parked in front of the “Casino” back of what we called the Reflecting Pool, and went in for a pack of Marboro Lights, 25 cents. I’d just filled up with gas at the US Esso station on the way into Frankfurt on the Autobahn, gas was 25 cents a gallon rationed each month.
I went into the Casino Building, the Officer’s Club, bought a pack of cigerettes, exited, got in the car, drove out the exit and was making my way down Hansa Allee I believe, when a bunch of satchel charges went off blowing the Casino and the Reflecting Pool to hell, killing I believe a LTC parked in a 2nd LT’s reserve space, just in front of the Casino. He was ascending the stairwell to the building. I’d missed getting killed by about two minutes. Moral to the story: Coffin Nails will kill you.
I wouldn’t give my 15 years in Germany for the world. We who served there brooked no BS between ourselves, never tool office politics seriously, because we all knew, nobody was getting out of there alive. Noncom evac rules had our families egressing from airports that were nuclear targets–nobody was expected to survive. So for the most part, we got along with each other great, rank immaterial. Why not? The Russians and the Germans 250 Battalions deep were a hundred miles away from us across the Fulda Gap, waiting to take a piece of our ass. The Baader Meinhof terrorist gang, hit us about 8 times while I served those years–we played run dodge and jump with those guys for decades as they traded in their left sympathies for being just–thieves. Later they were mocked in “Die Hard”. I couldn’t believe it.
I was there in the late seventies inside the Abrams Complex, the Poelzig Building, when the walls in the basement gave way to a underground “lake” and cavern that seemed to go for miles. It stank, and there were turrets breaking water from drowned tanks. We were ordered to stand down and evacuate, while the wall was rebuilt. I saw it, altho I could not see if as rumor provided, the cavern extended all the way to the Main Train Station.
What magic innocent times they were, the end of the conflict and the rise of Europe from its ashes. The time of my life. I miss those days, and my friends, some long gone.
Howzit going Davis. I was stationed there the same time as you were with the 22d P&A Battalion. Stayed at the Kennedy Kaserne. You know anyone by chance from my battalion?
Stationed at the “Patio” running the switchboard during 86 and 87. The rigs were kept in a fenced in area between the building and the fountain. Always had fun screwing around on the wierd elevators

I was assigned to the STAFF WEATHER OFFICE 1987-88. Loved the Abrams Complex very much. Operated a RATT rig for them. I’m always looking for former friends that were there. CONTACT ME AT jamescary43@yahoo.com or phone 757-351-9022
I worked in the basement at the V Corp CMDSA vault from 89-90. Had fun exploring that building and screwing around on the paternosters and searching for a way into the lower levels. We use to have fun messing with all the Officers and would spread out on our way to the chow hall so they would have to salute each one of us individually instead of as a group. Witnessed General Colon Powell’s change of command of the V Corp to General Julwan with Powell’s promotion to the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
We tried to find the lower levels too. The story was that they were flooded to destoy chemicals that were down there from WWII, or some BS. Great times though. Mike from SWO 87-88
Got there in 90 in G4 as log IT specialist. Great 3 years. Been back several times just to gawk. Try a layover in Frankfurt anytime we got to Europe. Have dinner at KGV under the EUROTURM. Great food and better people.
