I went to the Alabama Kaserne school 1965 to 1967. This was the former SS tank factory only twenty years before. Near the barbed wire we used to pick up bullets and discarded german medals. There was a bus driver called “Butchie” who was very strict but fair. There were armed GIs at the entrance from Schleissheimerstrasse. As a six-year old wenf on a “field-trip” to KZ Dachau. Now it seems so close to WW2. Does anyone have memories of this place and the people? Thanks, Frank
My father MG Salve H, Matheson then a COL commanded the10th Special Forces
during the Kennedy Administration. My sisters & I have fond memories of
Bad Tolz & Flint Kaseirne..
I took my PLDC training at bad tolz.. I love the tunnels under the barracks and the hole area. It was great when it was raining. I want to travel back to germany one day an visit all the places I was stationed. The civilian community was so wonderful and exciting.
I was at alabama kaserne in 1970. I worked as a duty soldier,(cleaning everything up there.) Me an about 20 other guys. Out of the kaserne there was a katina, the owners name was “pop”. He brought every piece of weapons and stuff that we found there. I wish I could of knew the value of those things then. I was 20 years old. I am 62 now. I dated this germany woman named christine muller. She got pregant by me and I saw a picture of the little girl once. Her parents did not like black soldiers. So we had to be discret with everything. Not long after the baby was born the military moved me to ausburg, and I never saw christine or my daughter again. I would love to see them both again.
I went to the middle school at Alabama depot in 1966. I lived on Morton Strasse near Warner Kaserne in North Munich. I’ll never forget driving through all those bombed out warehouses every day on the way to school. Great times!
I lived in a housing development on Fleming(sp?) Strasse in Munich. I was born in Wiesbaden 1957, lived in Heilbronn, Karlsruhe, then Ruislip,England, back to Germany in Munich, then moved to the states for the first time to Lake George, NY. I remember a couple people from those time, Jennifer Joseph, a guy named Clay who I know in England then he also moved to Munich. A couple people from the housing area including Nemo Pierre and a guy named Michel Gal.
I attended elementary school on Alabama around 1965-67. The base had a lot of bombed out buildings, and our school was in a huge warehouse/ofice building. I’m wondering what years David Hannum attended school there ?
I actually went to elementary school there! They bused us from the housing area outside of Warner Kaserne to there. Still remember that old, grumpy German national, who drove the bus.
I also went to elementary school there, in 1965-67. I loved Munich, but driving onto a bombed out base each day to go to school was a trip!!
When were you there??
I rode the bus from Warner 1965-1966 to Alabama for 7th grade. don’t remember the bus driver as much as the one girl on the bus who always wanted to fight anyone and everyone. terrifying ride!
do you remember coming back from Christmas vacation and having the school overrun with white mice from the science department
1963 through 1964. The we moved to Furth when my Dad’s battalion was shifted up there. I think that the 24ID was pulling out of Augsburg and Munich and that was the reason. I see Warner, Will, and others kasernes were closed done over the next several years. I too remember the bombed out buildings and the “rule” that we could not anywhere on the depot except to school and the little commissary. Of course, we are talking 17 years after the war was over. Dangerous I suppose.
I went to 2nd grade there .. I didn’t speak any English at the time .. and the teacher spoke no German – fortunately one girl in class could translate for me until I picked up enough of the language
I was with the 616 QM ( alabama depot) and other co’s. in Munich,
from Dec.10th. 1946 til Jan. 1951.
When we moved to Mannheim Germany.
where our co.feed y the 4 Army Div’s deployed to germany.
Do you recall the 85th D.R.S. being based in Munich at that time too? Lost my dad this past April and found his old basketball schedule from when he shot hoops for them at Jubilee Hall. They played your QM Company, 34th Air Depot, 44th Air Depot, 2nd Cav, 305 Bomb Group, and 442nd Troop Carrier Group at Jubilee Hall. Found a trove of pictures and items. Unfortunately, he chose not to tell us much of it. And info you might recall would be great.
To M Robinson, I also played basketball. 5 of my teammates were from Hawaii. We were all short, I was the tallest at 5’9″. I don’t recall anyone named Robinson. We played mainly at the Hofbrauhaus.
