I lived in Old Argonner right across from the Jr. H.s. (grades 7-9), the H.S. kids had to take take a bus to Frankfurt every day. We actually were in temporary housing in the NEW Argonner section for a while, then moved to OLD about 1962 – 1964. There was a U-shapped group of 3 buildings across from the school with a small playground in the middle. I cannot remember the building number, but the Principal of the school (ZIskin) lived above us. It was a great school and I had wonderful teachers. I played football for the ‘Red Raiders’, the Crusaders, and then the Hawks (grades 7,8,9). I will never forget the night Kennedy was killed, I was at the movide -which was stopped in the middle and the troops went to deploy and we went home to find even housing had guards for the first time. Tanks rolled through the streets all night long. Very tense even for brats.
Lived in New Argonner 69-73 with my parents. Graduated from FAHS in 73. I absolutly loved living there. We could walk to the german pool. First experience of the locals changing outside. haha The high school was not built yet. We used to sneek over to Campo pond. It was just wonderful growing up there.
To Linda Fillingham:
Wow! Was looking for a picture of the Middle School in New Argonner Kaserne when I found your comment, the first in a list of several comments about the area. Coincidentally, I lived in New Argonner 1971 to 1972. And I attended FAHS in my junior year and graduated in 1973 also, but back home in Pennsylvania! I wonder if we rode the same army green bus through those little towns on the way to Frankfurt.
I was looking for a pic of the Middle School because my younger brother attended it. I was able to find a photo online of Frankfurt American High with a light blue Volkswagen parked out front (which would become my first automobile, same color, 3 years later in the states).
What memories of that school and that area! 13 years after I left, in 1985, I returned to visit. Funny, I didn’t have a map but once in the general area of the high school, and the general area of Hanau, it all came back to me. At that time, little had changed.
After school year there in 1972, Brother and I had already arrranged to go home. But it was just then that we had the best time. Yes, we would also walk to the German pool. And we found bikes through what the Americans called “junking”, that is, going along to see what the Germans left out on their sidewalks as trash. We found enough parts to make 2 complete bikes. We didn’t want to leave!
Maybe yours & my paths have crossed. Or at least we have a third party in common. Small world.
Sincerely, Robert Fallon, Atlanta, GA
We lived in a rental house in Niederrodenbach in the latter half of 1960 then eventually moved to Old Argonner until early 1964. Fifty years later I find myself living on the other side of Frankfurt and dying to go see where we used to live. Will there be anything I recognize??
We lived there from 2006 until closing in late 2008. I don’t know what it looked like in the 60s, but we were back up there about 4 weeks ago (aug 2011) and they have done a lot on New Argonner. Pioneer, Sportfield, Old Argonner (with the exception of the grade school which the German’s are now using) and Fliegerhorst are just sitting empty and over grown. It is very sad to see. We loved it there.
I was the 414th Base Support battalion Commander from 1997-1999. We lived on New Argonner Kaserne right next to the gate leading to the Campo Pond Training Area. These were two of the best years of my military career. Great people, great friends, and a very welcoming community.
Bill Davis here…I was in your S3 shop working for Ben Loney from 1997 through mid 1999. Just wanted to touch base with you. I hope all has been well with you and your family.
My family and I lived in Old Argonner from 83 to 86. I also worked there as the Chaplain of the 81st Maintenance Battalion and had a service in an auditorium in Old Argonner.
Interesting to see what has ahppend in and around Hanau. i was there from 1967-68, first with the Materiel Section of the 85th Maint Bn at Pioneer Kaserne, then rather to my dismay transferred to the SP&O staff section of the Second Support Brigade HQ – In Hessen-Homberg or Hutier Kaserne. Recall they were next to each other opn:LAmboystrasse, but which one I no longer recall after nearly 45 years. Live in BOQ at At Argonner, right next to the O-Club… Interesting times, and en i got curtailed and shipped to Suth-east Asia. oh well.
I remember the BOQ next to the Officer’s Club. We stayed there for a few days when we moved back to the states in 1964. Was just there today looking around but it was pretty well fenced off so I couldn’t see my building #405 which sat in the middle. Was able to drive by the larger school. It is all much smaller than I remember it being but I was only a little kid. Cool to see it again after all this time.
My family lived in Argonner in housing opposite the school where I went to school with my two sisters in 1959. My eldest sister JoAnn was a cheerleader. There were great activities during the summer, held at the school and we used to go and get homemade icecream sandwiches at the NCO club not far away. Mom mom liked playing Bingo. Dad was a Capt. in the Army in Artillery, I think.
Hi Karen,
You might have been there when we were there. My dad was stationed there in the summer of 1960 and we stayed til January 1964. I was in 2nd-part of 4th grade. My dad’s was Captain and then Major Carroll Brewster. We lived in bldg. 405. My brother Tom was a year ahead of me.
As you know: New Argonner is sold “private” … I own one of the dopple-houses (223) … perhaps I can get some informations, who lived before myself here ….
My family and I lived on New Argonner Kaserne from 2002-2004. My wife worked at the CDC on Old Argonner. My unit (5-7 ADA) was stationed at Underwood Barracks/Kaserne. Great duty station, central to everything. Wish I had stayed longer. We miss Germany very much.
My husband, 1Sgt Melvin J. Wall was stationed in Hanau from January 1953 to September 1953. I joined him in December ’53 when tempoary quarters became available. We lived in housing that had been Geman apartments at one time. I cannot remember the name of the outfit that he was assinged to but our quarters were across the street from the Kaserne . The NCO Club was about a block from our quarters.
In Sept. of ’54, Mel was transferred to Augsburg and I believe it was to the 67th Transportation Corps. Our 1st child was born in Augsburg, Jan. of ’55. Mel received orders in Feb. 1956 and we were sent to Fort Hood, TX. He was assigned to the 4th Armored Division. Our daughter was born in Aug. ’56.
In Dec. ’57 we were sent back to Germany and this time he was stationed in Furth. I cannot remember the name of the Kaserne but I remember that there was a Helicopter Unit on the Kaserne. Our 3rd child was born in Nurnberg in May of 1959.
We were sent back to Fort Hood in Dec. of ’60. Mel retired after 20 years as an E-8 [1st Sgt]. We moved to Orange, Tx. where my parents were living. My husband died 21 July 2005. We were married almost 53 years when I lost him to COPD. My oldest son died in Oct. 2007. My daughter and son live pretty close to me.
He was called Top a lot of the time, but he was also called Wall by most of the men.
I would like to hear from anyone that knew my husband…..I would be glad to exchange email in the hopes of hearing from old friends that remembered us. Ramona Wall
We lived on Old Argonner (2006-closing in late summer 2008) and my son went to school and I worked at Argonner elementary. When we were there all the maintenance bays were already abandoned. We were one of the last three families on the kaserne. A nice summer of peace and quiet. It is all still there, but sadly empty and over grown. The Germans were supposed to use the school.
It is sad that the U.S. had to leave Germany. Being stationed there was great and something that any career Soldier should of expierenced. I am now in Italy enjoying the weather and the food. It is too bad that the Germans didn’t want us there anymore.
Hello, I am looking for an Argonner Elementary Teacher last name Rogers.
she was there from 1985-1988, her husband’s were Col Rogers who worked
