I was with co.b 2/36th.inf. from 64-67,made alot of good friends, and still trying to find any of them! I was in the 4th.plt. and b co.hq. as co’s pc driver. was on the plotting board most of the time in the field, hated wildflicken, like to frooze to death, did alittle blak market business, loaned some money ,and helped whenever i could. I did enjoy my time there as long as the parties held out,got to see aolt of germany while there. a nice place to visit but, didn’t miss it all that much when the time came to rotate back home. still looking for,Lindel ( tiny) Simpson,Tony Esposito,John d Goodnough,Big Jackson,Big Mike and more. anyone have an old co. roster from any of the years posted?
While in the military I was never stationed at the Rock. However, i attended many COC’s as Commanders Driver. It was better duty than playing as a Combat Engineer.
Now, as fate would have it, I am “stationed” on The Rock. I live in one of the Brick houses across from the old Main Gate! As a 12B I was stationed in Hanau, Friedberg and Giessen.
Now I work for an International Communications Company and Live on The Rock.
I was stationed at Butzbach 82-83 Not much happening at the Rock back then. Enjoy your time there and GO sight seeing. I wish I had done more of that while I was in Germany.
My father was stationed at “The Rock” in the 80s (I believe it was between 87-89). He was w/ HHC 1BDE/3AD. Towards the end of his tour he became Ayer’s EOA.
He was also stationed in Friedberg as well as an Instructor at Schloss Kaserne in Kransberg at the NCO Academy. Later, after I married-my husband was stationed in Giessen and we are currently living in Mannheim at BFV. We have done a COT so we lived in Stuttgart prior. This is going to be it for us-preparing to PCS in May.
We went back to revisit all the old stomping grounds. Ayers has been leveled and is used as a transportation yard. I believe a major truck company owns it and stores thier vehicles. Its so sad seeing it the way it is now. Nothing but pavement and fence. Its hard to believe American’s were ever there-no remnants remain. Even the old “rock video” is gone. The owners finally retired in 02 I believe! I was fortunate enough to see them when we were stationed in Giessen and rode out there often.
Now that Giessen is closed it looks like an overgrown ghost town. The German govt. hasnt done anything with it yet but its rumoured they would use the housing for 3rd country nationals, ie. turkish, polish, etc….I have no idea.
Thanks for this website! Its so great to revist the past and the wonderful memories that came w/the Army and life in germany. Im very fortunate to still have a small part of it by living here to this day.
Dad has retired and moved on. He currently resides in Clinton, Tennessee….fishing and hunting. He’s a happy camper!
Pete, Decade before you, 62-64, 31 mo’s and 13 days but who was counting! Place probably had changed little except 2/3FA had likely moved back to the Schloss one more time. Wonder who moved into those barracks next to the PX Annex after they left; nobody has answered me on that one yet? I think 3rd Arty spent about 15 years at the Schloss, counting both times. Came up to KG in Oct ’61 stayed for a decade and left and came back again in ’85 to the new billets; beat the hell out of 10-12 to a room! Discharged at Frankfurt and traveled 8 months. Hoch die Tassen.
I was stationed at the ROCK from November 1989 thur Feb. 1992. My unit was HHC 2nd Battalion, 32nd Armor”OUTLAW”. Infantry mortarmen. Retired from the military in January 2012, and currently resided in Texas. Would like to here from any of the Soldiers that were stationed on the Rock during this time period. If you would like to reply I can be reached at johnbreeding12@yahoo.com.

I was at The Rock from Fall 91 to Fall 93. Great times. Went to Google Earth and looked up the old place. The old place is not there anymore. It looks like the Germans have turned the base into a car depot or junk yard. I was in HQ 3/5 as a mechanic. Man what great times. E-mail me if you’re from that time frame. allenyoakum@gmail.com. See ya on the flip side.
I’m so glad I found this site. I was stationed at the rock form 1975-78. I was a Medic with the 3rd Armored, 2nd Battalion. I hold fond memories. Hope all my buddies from days are fine. Spec. Moe Cruz, Sgt Holman, Sgt Parks, just to name a few. I also, was a 91G20 CDAAC counselor there. Maybe some of you drinkers remember CDAAC.
Yes. I think they subsequently moved to Butzbach and then back to a new facility at Ayers. When I was there, A btry and Service btry were in the same building.
When Division pulled all UAC Sections (Personnel) to Frankfurt it created some spare room, which was needed with all the troops piling into Ayers, so Svc moved from top of Hqs Bld to top of A Btry. This all happened in Oct of ’63; month before Kennedy was whacked. I was disappointed not to have been stationed at Schloss; fell in between the cracks before and after the Schloss thing but I had a lot of company. Hey, didn’t hurt my feeling changing from a cannon cocker to supply; stayed clean, warn, and lived by my lonesome for 18 months. Being ED and getting a POV in those unheard of days wasn’t a bad gig. I was fortunate, didn’t miss the Alerts at 2 or 3 in the morning, no formations, and lots of freeedom to come and go off Ayers; let’s face it, good to get away from the place for a few hours. Hoch die Tassen!
I was stationed in Kirchgoens and Freidburg assigned to Bravo Co. 501st FSB from 1992 – 1996. I was deployed to Bosnia in the winter of ’95 as part of a small detachment that was assigned as support to 267 and 467 Field Artillary Battalions. Besides the awful memories of Bosnia, Hohenfels (boar hog hell), and Grafenwoehr, I had SO much fun! It was devistating to see that both bases in KG and Freidburg have closed and been practically demolished. I really do miss GE and wish I had gone back before all the destruction.
I was in Cco.2/36 inf during the great time of 77-79. I miss the Rock although it was tough duty, there were a lot of great freinds and opportunities..

Yes. I think they subsequently moved to Butzbach and then back to a new facility at Ayers. When I was there, A btry and Service btry were in the same building.
High school “typling”? … Just kidding.
