What a surprise I had last Saturday. I went to an open house of the new Obermayr bi-lingual elementary school in Ruesselsheim, low and behold it is located in my old work place, HQ. 106th Trans Bn. What a trip into the past.
From 1975 to 1978 I was the safety manager for the Battalion, one of the best jobs I ever had. Grady Burleson, Ray Sterns, and ? Wallace were my Bn commanders. Harold Coe from 70th Trans Co up at Giessen was the first high miler to pass 300 thousand safe miles. I had organized a big convoy to go from Giessen to Azbill Barracks, on the way Coe passed the 300 thousand miles. AFN TV was waiting at the entrance to the TTP, Lt Col Burleson was so proud and after that I couldn’t do anything wrong.
Today. the HQ building is totally renovated, the 78th Trans Co building is converted to town houses. The parade field, TTP and motor pool are now built up with town houses as well. I will take some pictures of the place and try to post them on Google Earth and Panoramio.
I live in the town next door, Raunheim, right under the approach patterns of Frankfurt airport.
