i was stationed at francois from june 1961 until jan 1964 with the 1st msl 32 arty would love to hear from anyone that was there . i was a gunner with the 3rd launcher section
I was trying to find a guy that was at Francois 1960- 1961 named Charlie Seigler (sic) he was from Cleveland. We said we would keep in touch with each other but after I left Germany in Oct. of (I think it was 1961) I never heard from him again. Maybe someone from that time remembers him. I check this site frequently so if anyone has info I’d appreciate it.
Do you have more info on him? Age now… And are you sure of the spelling of his last name?
If I check on him assuming he was born app 1940 there is nothing to be found. Only 8 Charlie Seiglers nationwide in my search page and the ages don’t match.
I am very familiar with the Francois, Hessen Homburg, Hutier. and Yorkhof (Chemitzerstrasse) and Kasernes on Lamboy strasse. I was stationed there from June 1963-June1966. I have general knowledge of all the military units in and around the Hanau area. I was assigned to the 629th Medical Clearing Company, 36th Medical Battalion located on Yorkhof. Our unit’s Motor Pool, vehicles, warehouses, and equipment were located on Francois Kaserne. Pull a lot of Guard Duty on Francois. Was there during the “Operation Big Lift” like to have froze myself to death during the three week operation. Winters of 1962 and 1963 were the coldest winters in Germany. Rivers, lakes Froze solid. The US Military had to rescue a lot of Germans during these years…..a lot of flooding. Had friends stationed with the 32nd on Francois. I know some names from the years 1960-1962 that were staioned at Francois….Danny Smith from Virginia, Ray Wise from Arkansas, James Dockery from Virginia. I use to eat at the Snack Bar a lot. I use to hang out at the Teddy Bar. Most of the others were regulars at the City Bar, Moonlight Bar and other bars downtown. Great assignment. Really enjoyed Hanau during this period.
You mentioned the snack bar at Francois Kaserne. Even in 76, 77 that snack bar was the bane of many a soldiers waist line. They had burger combos to die for. And their milk shakes shook my world. l had to force myself to stop going there or my wife was going to complain to my CO that I wasn’t getting enough P.T.
I was in HQ Company in late 75 thru the better part of 76. I had been across the street on the Hessen Homburg Kaserne (23rd Engineers) doing what I call organizational magic as head of the Power Generator section and a half dozen other responsibilities they gave me. After a year I put in for a transfer to a helicopter unit so I could get some hands on experience on turbine engines when I was rustled mid transfer by the 1/40 FA so I could do for them what I did for the 23rd. The 1/40 was a blast, excuse the pun, and I enjoyed the comardery. Because the two units were across the strasse from each other I was able to keep friends from both units.
I was in Hq. Btry. 4hth How 18th Arty. 1961&62. I know the Berlin conflict happened when I was there. Commanding Officer was Lt. Col. Eli Fishpaw. I never could forget that name. As I recall there was an Honest John missile out fit at the end of the kaserne near where the snack store was. I also remember the Eden Lounge down on Lamboy Strasse. Played sax in a music combo there a couple of times.
Tom,I remember Col,Fishpaw i probably seen you around there someplace,& yes there was a Honest John outfit the other side of the snack bar,I ate in that snack bar a lot ,,couldnt stand the chow hall,,those greasy food trays,,I had some friends in Hq,Btry, but dont remember there names,,,good duty there, being a track we had lotsa breakdowns,so we worked a lot,,,luv to go back there

From September 58 to September 1960. I was assigned to the 6th Howitzer Section, A Battery, 4th Howitzer Bn.18th FA. I was a driver of one of the SP.s and promoted to Gunner (Sgt). My tour with the 4th/18th FA was the best of my 23 year Army career. I drove a 1951 Studebaker (green) convertible. The maintenance guy,s in the Battery motor pool helped me keep it running. Can,t remember his name, but the very tall (Black) Senior Track Mechanic SP/5 helped me the most.
I was in the Alpha Battery FDC 1st/40th FA 77-79.Capt John Duty was my Battey commander and Terry Williams was our Top.(1stSgt.)Sgt Rick Wildermuth was my fisrt section chief.

After the soldiers left Francois, I worked there as a secretary (Civil Service) for LTC Fox, Director of Engineering and Housing, from 1993-1994.
