I worked in AFOD from September 1971 until October 1974 as a civilian in the traffic section. Had a great time and really enjoyed working with the civilian and military staff. I have been trying to make contact with Bob Pietrowski who was a SP4/5 in the clearance section. If anyone knows his whereabouts I'd like to try and contact him.

Stationed at TWA (Teenie Weenie Airlines) at HAAF from March 1967 to Sep 70. Weather Observer with Det 3, 7th Weather Squadron. Knew a lot of Army, USAF & German Nationals while there. Would like to hear from you if you were there.

In the 60s the Det was commanded by a LTC and had two Majors and 2 Chief Master Sgts and about 30 people total. I went back in 1984 and found it was commanded by an E-8 and consisted of about half the personnel.

Loved the Polish guards roaming the open (unfenced) airfield at night, how we had to lower a traffic arm to stop traffic when a fixed wing aircraft landed or took off; the friendly people in AFOF, later called AFOD, I believe. They helped many of us find housing, cars good places to eat, party or shop, etc, and were good friends to the ever-changing menangerie of GIs passing thru their domain.

Until I got married I lived in the airfield barracks where we shared many good times playing pool, cards and watching the grand adventure as the hookers came into the barracks late friday and saturday nights looking for fresh meat. Inevitably, a few guys would get what they always dreamed of - right in front of the rest of the guys. Also loved the schwimbad, the downtown tourist bars in Heidelberg, the restaurants and the Neckar river. Loved the language, food, culture, history and the German people. Saw a lot and learned to love the country.

Went back to Germany in 1984, but couldn't get assigned to Heidelberg. Went to Wuerzburg - which I really loved, also - for 6 years. You can't beat riding your motorcycle around the vinyards on a saturday morning, then stopping at a dumpy old gasthaus to have a beer or kaenchen Kaffee with some local duffers.

No better memories in my whole life.....
