Just a little more information I remember, Lt. Hersheymann had a wonderful 1952 Pontiac Chieftain, butterscotch color, Cpl. Wilcox drove a 1954 Buick Special, red metallic.
There were also some tragedies I recall, the most vivid of course when I discovered an Officer in his gray Kaiser Manhatten who shot himself, and the fateful day a RCAF F-86 crashed at the small military runway, near the PX and ended up in a residential area.
Other than those two tragedies, I only have fond memories
Thank You all so much

Greetings to any of the fine US Servicemen and women, stationed in Karlsruhe during the years of 1954 thru 1956. I was a little German kid living with my mother, a maid, working for the Cordes family, later the Heikels, possibly residing on Tenessee Ave. ?
I have special fond memories of Liuetenant William Hersheymann, and Corporal Richard Wilcox, these good folks treated me like a son, with care and kindness.
The experience planted the seed for my desire to one day move to the USA, in 1981 that dream came true, became a citizen in 1996

I was a member of the 809th Panel Bridge Company from 57 to 59. First stationed at Phillips, then later at Gerszewski Kaserne. Remember lots of buddies. Used to call me Rich. If you were there and remember let me know and we can talk over old times.
I was a platoon leader stationed at Phillips Barracks 1959-1961 with Co. C, 78th Engr. Battalion (C), Lt. Col. Keith Eiler was the battalion C.O. Then in 1961-1962 I was with the 55th (?) Panel Bridge Company at Grezewski(?) Barracks, also in Karlsruhe. Both units were part of the 555th Engineer Group, the “triple nickel”.
Many fond memories of those days–I met my wife to be, Nancy C. Peck of New Britain, CT there. She was a teacher at the U.S. elementary school in Paul Revere Village. Would love to hear from anyone there during that period.
Hi Victor:
I was stationed at Phillips Barracks from 9/60-4/61, Company C, 78th Engineer Battalion. I was a combat demolition specialist. My platoon leader was Sergeant Ellis Sinclair. Some of my fellow soldiers were Gerhart Smerl, and Heinz Sieger. I would love to hear from anyone who was there at that time.

Was inKarlsruhe in 1957-58 with 552nd Gun Bn. Installed missiles at Ettligen but can’t remember when. Just remember sunflowers. There were only a few of us there at the time. Would like to hear from anybody who remembers or knows anything about that.
I just now saw Julian Carnes’s response to my February 9 post, and it’s good to hear from someone who was at Phillips Barracks when I was. I well remember Lt. Carnes. I was the battalion S-1 clerk under Captain Green and accordingly also worked directly for Col. Hall and Major Mullahy. I had a great front-row seat with which to observe the very disparate temperaments of those two leaders!
I search Informations from my father Kenneth Smoot. He was stationed in Phillips Baracks 1957? – 1964? Who knows him? I never see him… If you know any high person who coms on informations over this time to get out witch company my dad works. Write on: merlins2009@web.de
I was in the 502d from 59-60. The CO was CPT Ed Williams. I was the Bridge Engineer/platoon leader. MSG Adams was my platoon sergeant. We switched from the M4 to M4T6 bridge while I was there and went to a month long bivouac near Speyer to switch out and train on the new bridge. Loved bridging the Rhine on Sundays in the summer.

I was stationed at Philips Barracks, 379th Chemical Smoke Generating Company’ October 1951 to November 1952. Is there anyone who can provide me with the address or street location of the Barracks. In 1979 on a trip to Germany I visited Phillips Barracks. It appeared ti billet a quasi German military group. Thanks for any help.
I am wondering if you knew my father or if you can help me with a question? My father was born in Poland in 1926 how does a person join the US Army if they are a Polish citizen? The the certificate below his point of entry into the US Army?
This is the 1st Certificate: US Army Certificate of Training: Private First Class Jerzy Waldemar Ochocinski, LSSN 2807, 4087 Labor Service Co., 41st Chemical Smoke Generator Battalion., Phillips Barracks, Karlsruhe, Germany, dated August 16, 1952.
This is the 2nf Certificate: US Army Certificate of Discharge: (USAREUR LABOR SERVICE), Service: 8 months. Jerzy Ochocinski, 2807, 4087 Labor Service Co., Guard, for the following reason: Enlistment in US Army, Phillips Barracks, Karlsruhe, Germany.
Susanna,
In the 50′s and 60′s, there were so-called Labor Service units attached to the US Army units in Germany, especially the engineers, transportation, smoke generators, etc.. These units were usually made up of Polish DP’s who had prior military service either in the Polish army or the German army. I was the US Army liason/supervisor of a LS unit that provided bridge support. These men were experienced and very, very professional. They were perfect for teaching a young lieutenant the ins and outs of bridging. They were GOOD. And highly respected.

I was at Phillips Barracks in 1957-58 with the 78th Engr Bn and look back fondly on my duty there. The 78th had a 30th reunion in 1988 in Williamsburg Va, at which a fine and rowdy time was had by all, but I’ve heard nothing from or about the old gang since then. If there’s anyone out there who wants to holler, please do!
Doug, I was in A Co, 78th ECB from Ft. Benning to 1959 when I moved over to the 502 Engr Co. (FB). I was at the Williamsburg reunion and have fond memories of all the old gang. I suspect many are no longer with us. The officers (about 20) had a reunion here in Charleston, SC in 2008. We are getting OLD and several (including myself) were ailing and some were quite frail. A couple have passed away since, and a couple of wives (Toni Maurer, who was the Special Service Club manager and who married then-lieutenant Dave Maurer, and CPT Cox (B Co) wife passed away in the past few years.) Gary Shirley has been rattling the bushes about one more before we all move on to Fiddler’s Green. Good to see you are alive and kicking. Sedulitate.

If you have any information or know anyone who might, I would greatly appreciate it.
